Canonn thread gone

Updating the OP as Ozric's now created a bunch of new Canonn threads. They're stickied on the main Aliens page. Here's the links in case anyone's missed them:

Previous OP below.

With all respect to the reasons given, I don't think stopping the Canonn thread was a good idea. It had it's flaws, but it kept a lot of things in one place, made things followable, and gave a place where things could be reported and followed up, or questions asked and answers given.

As it stands, that seems to have been replaced with a a forum area with no structure, where what would have been a post is now a new thread which makes things even harder to follow. Not sure following every thread is going to be practical!

What does everyone reckon?

Should we have a new threadnaught?

Or should we try creating some sub-threadnaughts?

Personally I'd be ok to recreate my section from the Canonn FP as it's own thing, but still think a lot of value is lost by having things separated, and some kind of overall thread is necessary.

Yeah, there needs to be a Canonn thread. Having things all spread about in different topics doesn't work for me at all. It's better as a single discussion thread.

The Threadnaught was great back in the day. But it was so full lately, of so many different and disconnected elements (that all were probably somehow connected, I admit), that I didn't get as much use of it. So I'm happy with "managed" sub-threads, with a community member updating the first post maybe, if they can.

That would probably work. But there cant be a billion different threads for evry new occurence.
It needs a structure to it.

Stickied "Encounters"
Stickied "Markings"
Stickied "Guardians"
Stickied "Barnacles"
Sticked "New site"

otherwise this forum will quickly fill up with content that will be difficult to parse when it is all decentralized.

If nothing else, it should be replaced with a few stickied threads which follow the current areas of investigation, as Ian suggested at the end of the threadnought.

e.g

Tharg ship encounters observations
Tharg Cargo experiments
Guardians
Barnacles

One of the benefits now of a dedicated forum is that - assuming we can get some good sticky action - things can rise to the top and stick around while needed.

Meanwhile, the old thread's FP can remain as a reference for anything that's not fetting its own thread now.

What's now required is some brave and trusted souls to start those newer threads.

Just for the good order.... The thread closure has nothing to with my (the last) post in the thread, but is part of some forum wizardy Brett has been working on.

Don't blame me, it was T.j!

...all in good hands then :)

If I've learned anything over this past three years it's that the community and Brett and the team can be trusted; and my learned friends in the Canonn Council will get it right.

I'm not volunteering purely because I can't guarantee being reliable; and that makes me a poor choice :)

Don't worry, there is a plan, all you'll probably have to be is a bit more constrained.

You know we'd take you though.

Am in the process of talking to some folks in Canonn on how to continue the thread series. With the new alien forum, they have expanded rights in how they can go about the series now. :)

Hi Brett, don't suppose my guardian thread can get a place as a sticky in this alien forum? As much as I respect the guys in the Canonn research group, they don't hold a divine right/monopoly over all things alien :D

Difficult to split up the Canonn thread as it was mainly a clearing house for all discoveries - people knew where to report weird stuff. By the very nature you cannot split that up or people will just get discouraged and wander away.

I thought I was late to the party, but I didn't realise how late... So late that the thread I was just about to post in is gone.

Anyway, that Barnacle forest...

If you scan it, then come away from the planet and go back, you now have 3 Thargoid barnacles on that planet listed in different locations.

Weird. Anyway you guys probably already knew about that so...
