Fading Optimism. But still optimistic.

First off, huge Elite fan , love it despite it's flaws.

Second, been really enjoying the new content, for the first time I feel like I can explore the areas around **** and actually have a chance of finding something. The new content has been excellent as well. No spoilers but you know what I mean.

BUT , I'm feeling a sense of impending doom. There seems to be a reliance on certain mechanics, take USS for example, a crappy placeholder mechanic that shouldn't even be in the game. I can live with that because the new stuff is great fun. We have new modules and ... oh a new CG that utilises them.... only to allow (again) the delivery of purchasable goods rendering the new mechanic and associated fun completely redundant. Worse than that its completely pointless trying the new stuff as the numbers / time taken don't add up. In fact if you run the Tissue samples you are going to end up in the bottom of the CG with huge repair bills to boot.

So a new (great) bit of gameplay has been added , then made redundant in one fell swoop.

Do it a couple of times for fun and then go back to regular hauling.

Also where are the Galnet news articles expressing the horror and outrage of whats happening in the game ?! Giving some atmosphere , especially for the people that aren't in the area!?

COME ON FDEV!!! PLEASE make the most of this!

I don't want to be one of the legion of naysayers on here I really don't, but it looks dangerously like the gun is pointed at your foot again.

GalNet is stupid, i agree with you, currently its a pointless system and could quite easily be handled so much better.

As for the SS yeah, its not about being reliant on mechanics, its that FD have no choice but to make Thargoids OPTIONAL danger rather than REAL danger because if people came under attack by Thargoids without there express consent (landing in a USS) they would hit the E-roof and bury the forum in salt.

When you consider that FD feel their hands are tied into making a full out Alien invasion of high tec, unknown enemies but can only do it in such a way that people choose to be part of it, its never going to feel as deep and real as it could.

Its unfortunate, but that is just how it is.

I also wish that CG had been tissue samples only. There is no way to focus play on the new content, and meaningfully advance the CG tiers. The two are counter-purpose.

Let me also ask... I am not able to get in-game for a while, but does the new CG give any clues about how to collect the tissue samples? What modules are required and where to get them?

You need a research collector, sold at founders and various military surface installations IIRC.

Ninjas , ninjas everywhere.

You need the research limpet controller to collect tissue samples.

Yes, I already know all that from the forums.

I'm wanting to know whether the CG text tell players this stuff?

I don't agree, they are already primarily restricted to one area, so it's already a player choice. Not to mention the fact that hyperdiction can happen to anyone.

They are indeed hamstrung, but apparently only by the mechanics they have created.

Now I'm still optimistic because we are just (hopefully) seeing the tip of the iceberg , but this latest CG really worries me, not just because it's more of the same but because it's also repeating past mistakes.

Thats the thing mate, the goids cannot attack stations because then people who haven't chosen to be attacked by Goids will be attacked. Look at the damage done to small medium and large ships when attacked by Thargoids, it isnt consistent at all, the same ship does scaled damage to all ship types to ensure everyone has a chance to escape. I expected serious damage from those guys but i could have taken it for a good 5 minutes plus, and yet Obsidian Ant survived several minutes also in his explorer asp...

Trust me, the ONLY restriction with the Thargoids is appeasing people who will be outraged by a change of gameplay mechanic resulting in loss of assets. This is why the goids do barley no damage, and are in locations a player must choose to go.

Thats a problem right there, the outrage from the "i didnt want to be part of the content" crowd .. its an alien invasion for crying out loud , if you dont want to be part of it then goto a quiet part of space or simply shut off the game.

This is a whole different argument , that already has threads for it I believe. This isn't about the threat the actual ships pose it's about the threat the game faces if they don't make the most of this and stick to the same tired old mechanics!

Of course you're entitled to your own beef :)

Why should USS not be in the game? I do not get that at all.
USS as such are perfectly fine... but....

The only thing I would like to be able to do is search for them in a more active manner.
I think ships should get a scanner like the SRV has.
I would love to see blips on my ship's scanner and then have to home in on them. that would be much more fun.

Your right in and of its-self that its a separate issue but its related in the reason that the current mechanics are being used the way they are, imho.

I said all along SS and conflict zones would be the home of the Thargoids, i just hoped i was wrong, now that they are there, i just hope it changes :).

In fairness i think its been a decent start to the patch, people that never saw goids finally have...Im in no rush to kill one, infact i'll be quite disapointed if a goid bites the dust in the next few months but hey!

TLDR; GalNet needs to actually be used, and we need to see something NEW, not reskinned NPCs in Signal Sources.

We just got more community goals. Another week of no Aegis weapons to fight the Thargoids.

You really think we were waiting with high anticipation for more CGs? Are you kidding me.
------------
Edit: we're getting the anti-Thargoid weapons, thanks.

Hi folks,

Just wanted to say congrats on a successful CG and that the rewards will be with you asap.
Aegis has manufactured the modules and is just shipping them out to the relevent bases for distribution.
Lets just hope that they selected next day delivery.

Thanks and all hail to our Thargoid overlo......I mean fly safe out there commanders.

Great idea about searching for USS with a scanner. It's simple ideas like that which could go a long way if FDev were to implement them.

I have proposed it several times, ever since we got USS.
I hope that "season 3" will bring some changes to the current simplistic way we are presented with USS.
I think the SRV scanner is a very well designed and interesting mechanic that involves us much more actively.
As spaceships are Elite's main reason for existence they sure deserve a mechanic that is at least just as cool as the SRV scanner.
FD has already proven they can do it, so why not implement the mechanic in ships?

Yeah exactly, again that's a whole other argument! But something as simple as scanning for stuff would change the dynamic completely.

Again , to reiterate I've not lost hope YET.

But as an example what if:

The events around **** were plastered all over Galnet, in game news etc.

What if the stations in the area where offering search and rescue missions to save people from the chaos that was happening, what if those missions carried the risk of ... unwanted guests.

You would feel like you were helping, that there was risk, and reward!

What if there was a sense of panic, even it was only coming from mission descriptions.

I had a great moment when I launched my SDF and the ai pilot said "Er Im not sure about this those signals aren't of human origin"

Why aren't there Ai warships guarding the stations sending messages like " pilots take care this area is under attack by unknown vessels stay docked for your own safety" , I mean local is clogged with text saying "our in flight entertainment is great!" from tourist ships . It's just text files! Add some flavour!

There could be rescue crews at the wreckage sites, and when guests turn up they could panic and warp out, the possibilities are endless.
