So I backed the Kickstarter to Alpha level and my wife showed complete disinterest until I told her how much it cost.

Then I decided to upgrade my aging Geforce 450 1GB to a Geforce 770 4GB to the cost of around £420. I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

When it arrived and I discovered the new GPU was nearly as big as my car, I made a trip to Overclockers and bought a Predator X case and a Corsair 800W PSU for around £200 in total. I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

This was all fine and I found my trusty Microsoft Sidewinder 2 but it failed to work on Windows 8 properly. Perfect reason to upgrade to a Thrustmaster TFlight HOTAS £42. I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

Then just recently my Dad told me his computer was getting old and clunky and could I sort it for him. I thought that was a perfect reason (excuse) for me to upgrade my motherboard etc and give it to him. I had an Intel i7 870 which had been totally bullet-proof. But the motherboard was small and only had one PCI slot and only allowed 16GB of RAM. Not very upgradable.

So another trip to Overclockers...

Intel i7 4930... £358 I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.
ASUS Deluxe X79 motherboard... £220 I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.
32GB Corsair Vengence RAM... £250 I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.
Samsung 250GB SSD... £92 I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.
Corsair H80i liquid CPU cooling... £62 I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

I'm not going to add this all up because I am AFRAID. Luckily I had some money set aside from a long overdue savings account. But I'm still not telling her.

So thank you Messrs Braben and Brookes for turning my marriage into a sham!

I'm joking of course :D

I have not told her much about Elite no, but she has seen the bloody big X55 HOTAS and the razer orbweaver now in front of my screen... Hard to hide those... :D

I've not mentioned the new joystick currently in the post. I may understate its cost if asked by my wife. Probably ought to tell her not to get me anything for my birthday next month...

This poll is a sad reflection on modern Britain. No wonder the divorce rate is so high, no point in being married if you are going to keep secrets from each other. ;)

Yes, and my wife was delighted!

Nothing says, 'honey, I will watch the kids for as long as you want, while you do whatever you like, while spending whatever you want', like blowing £150 on a joystick. :D

EDIT: I've just worked out why she keeps trying to buy me a PS4...

Oh how that made me laugh! I would honestly pay good money to get an evening to myself LOL.

Please don't misunderstand me, my marriage is very healthy and I love my daughter :D

I haven't told my wife exact numbers but she's got a pretty good idea given the number of large boxes that have arrived at the house with more kit in. New monitor, graphics card, speakers and joystick have all made an appearance. That and I got the Alpha in April, I couldn't hold out any longer.

This is perhaps the only game in recent years that I would have done this for though. Would have bumbled along with my old kit for a number of years otherwise.

Now we need a poll "Are you sure your wife/partner won't find "Have you told your wife/partner EVERYTHING about Elite?" poll on Elite forums?" ;)

Yep completely agree there! There's something about Elite that just drove me to keep spending money!!!! Maybe because I've been waiting 20 years. That's how I can justify it!!!! £/yr is pretty good. She spends more on chocolate I'm sure (hope)!!!!!!!

why hiding such?

I didn't made it all in once.... but my pc update (see sig!), around 2000€, was done around february or march... and the 3 screens (900€) a few month later. By luck, i already had trackIR, pedals, stick/gas and pedals..

Why the hell are you not speaking about with your 'half' :S

Am I the only person in the world who has a joint account and joint credits cards? Marriage (or long term relationships) are a partnership I really hate the idea of "my money, your money" just seems very odd.

My main problem is going to be explaining the DK2 that I've ordered to her. Historically she's not very observant when it comes to tech (normally I'd just tell her "oh no, that giant 32 inch monitor has always been there" and get away with it.

However the fact I'm playing a game with what appears to be an obscure bondage device strapped on my face may be difficult to explain

Don't take it too seriously guys, really. Pinch of salt. Squeeze your eyes.

You cannot measure people by your own metrics (or whatever the saying is in English). Bear in mind people have different lives, different motives, different life stories. Some things that you do may seem weird to me, you never know. But I respect that and don't say "oh how can you do This and That? How?! That's not the way to do it, you should do it MY way."

YOUR way is undoubtly best for YOU, but it not necessarily must be the best way for someone else with completely different life situation.

All in all, don't take it too seriously.

And I always say: if you can't understand it, at least respect it. Lack of understanding of something does not mean it's wrong or bad.

No bad feelings :)

LOOOOOOOOL, please go on everyone, it's really funny :D :D :D

I like specially the
"oh no, that giant 32 inch monitor has always been there"

Now, thinkin back, i think I did it already ONCE, when I bought the GoPro.
- "oh, is that a new cam?"
- "oh no, don't remember? Bought that years ago" <just came newly out, GoProHero3>

Honesty isn't everything. Here in the States my wife was very open from the start that she was fooling around on Second Life on her computer and oddly enough we are getting a divorce despite her affairs not being kept secret at all. ;)
