End The Grind (Post 2.4 idea)

The way I see it, "grind" in video games really just means "Doing something repetitive that has no meaning for itself". Elite would feel less grindy if missions and progression had more of a purpose. My suggestion is to give pilots goals to accomplish that offer them exclusive rewards. These aren't just missions, but simply things to aim for. They could be issued by factions, posted on GalNet, or just be universally given to every pilot in the Pilot's Federation. In addition to the weekly CG, there could be a monthly goal as well.

Goal Ideas:
1. Visit Hutton Orbital. Reward: Hutton Truckers Hat (Holo-Me).
2. Reach 'King' rank in the Empire. Reward: Gutamaya styled Ship Kit for the Vulture.
3. Visit Colonia. Colonia Shoulder Patch and Decal (Holo-Me/Livery).
4. Kill 5 Thargoid Ships. Reward: Thargoid Kill Count Ship Names (Livery).
5. Reach the 'Tycoon Rank'. Reward: Business Suit (Holo-Me)

We could also go a step further and have factions offer 'Campaigns', where pilots are given a long term goal to work on to progress their relationship with a faction and gain access to exclusive missions. They'd be like personal versions of community goals. For Example, The Prismatic Imperium could request that you prove your worth to them by sourcing Palladium and delivering to a specific location. The more you do in the campaign, the more standing you get, and you gain access to higher paying, more difficult missions.

That's my idea for the day.

Not bad idea. But there must a choice for players whether to be involved in all this or not. So not all missions have to include this always.

Goal ideas will be a nice addition

The campaign idea were is the more interesting will need exemptions of manipulate bgs doing it for me should be the opposite integrated in the bgs as a more persistence universe emerge

nice propositions

Grind in the game is as you say repetitive, everyone one pretty much wants to get millions of credits and when you do, then what do you do? The game is very much a hungry animal we want more and have little patience to wait, however the immersion factor is what makes a good game, and the immersion is slowly dying in Elite, getting rewards can help however such small rewards of a paint job or holo me add on seem fine, but I feel players will want a lot more.

Lets look at the basics we are here because it's a space sim of sorts, and we all want different things from the game and some key areas need work as a progressive move forward, 2.4 is all about quality of life improvements so players are coming forward each day making suggestions of what they would like and what would make the game more fun to play.

Traders: as we know trader is a big part of the game and has become quite stale for sometime, trying to find a decent route that pays well, ( I recall when i first started playing that earning 60,000 crds on a two way trip was awesome at the time nower days you wouldn't even begin to consider taking a mission of that low payout, so the game has moved on in ways of payouts but so have we as players, and we need to be kept entertained. Trading needs to be worthwhile again. Maybe something like employment bulletin board offering the right rep players first come first serve "high paid trading route for a limited time". So in a way its worth while looking around for these in each faction, feds, empire alliance, so on.

Bounty hunting: is a mix bag at the moment you find your own way pick your own missions high risk or not, however with immersion it could do with a buff maybe get tip-off from a station source or in-flight message giving you updates on locations of high interest or last known location of a wanted person or wreck would be welcome change. After all, immersion is still key in every game facit here.

Exploring: with improvements coming we can only wait and see, however exploring should be all about tech and finding new things as anything new or what we have not seen before is immersion right, Frontier have this growing problem of always saying mystery new things or lots of things still to find in the galaxy, but the way I see it, is that the galaxy is so huge they have only tipped a handful of things into try find hence the grind in exploring, the galaxy should be teaming with things and not just new planets to find, it's nice that when we plan a explore trip we get kitted out we double check everything we need to take with make sure our ship is good to go that's great that immersion right there so to keep it there we need a few things, as when we get into deep space that when immersion slowly gets to us for example we do the space honk great we start earning credits but that's all under the hood immersion behind the scenes stuff we don't have much to do with until we cash them in later, what we need is a proper good surface planet scanner that reveals all whats on the planet to whats in the planet, this immersion would now make us focus on as many planets as we wanted scanner in two ways the honk which as we all know gives us some basic details or shows us some planets another scanner like the detail surface scanner should be giving us the rest wouldn't it be nice to see a outlined scan on a planet telling us where wreck ships are metallic items like canisters cargo, buildings and mineral deposits, this would now give us a purpose to examine a planet and even stay in systems longer than just a quick space honk and move on to the next rinse and repeat = grind, this is just a basic idea of whats needed there are many great ideas from players out there besides this one for exploring. gain this is an option for players as there will be players that will say yeah but this makes exploring to easy which ok then you still have the option of exploring the old fashion way if you want to so in all this idea gives players the options and paying for the tech to do this.

Combat: not being a heavy combat player combat has had its ups and downs over the years "nerf" is a word we all know these days and players do keep a close eye on all things combat for me combat is more bounty hunting in rez zones and seems ok for the most part, however, there are many great ideas from players already out there so cant comment too deeply on this subject matter. There are dedicated combat players and casual combat players.

Galaxy/Nav map: needs some huge attention as in the cosmetic side of things maybe some tweaks like you are here pin showing where you are it has had some tweaks recently which have all been welcomed, so moving forward with any galaxy map and nav map updates I'm sure will be equally welcome.

These are just some ideas that would reward and bring much more immersion to the game I feel, we all have our ideas but the more we suggest to Frontier will hopefully will be taken on board, so keep posting ideas.

I like this thought. I was thinking of doing the Hutton Orbital run around Christmas time because I feel extremely challenged by its existence in the game. While I missed the Hutton Orbital Mug Event years ago; this is just the sort of thing that will give me more of an incentive to do it sooner.

I'm rather surprised that the devs here haven't tried to get on that bandwagon as there are a few games out there (a couple of them that I actually play) that have these sort of in-game/micro-transaction incentives for loyal players.

After thinking about this though, the subject for the suggestion does not solve the problem with the constant grind in the game. It does suggest instead a distraction to it.

So. Right now we have people complaining because they have to grind in order to get cool top of the line ships and you think they woudn't complain if they could get a fancy hat for some other grind? :)

I like small rewards for achievements but this would do nothing to fight the grind. Storytelling mission would be cool but they require a lot of work and would be for the most part done only once so there would be no lasting appeal. We already have a story campaign - the guardian stones - you can be even the hero there which is against the normal Elite design - and it isn't very popular.

This is a distraction to the grind, pure and simple. And you'd be surprised how this little thing can go a long way with the majority of the player base. Digital Extremes did something similar with the Fashionframe of their flagship game, Warframe. It might not have stopped those players that are looking for easements to some of the grind in that game, but it did appease many from the building ire that can be generated from the repetitive grind.

I have gone down a slighltydifferent path opened a second account to get enough funds to kit out an explorer and get my A** to mars as it were and what lays at the other end of the galaxy whilst in the mean time if I get bored I can jump into account No1, hopefully will break up some of the grind.

Nice ideas, but it won't stop people fom grinding. People grind because they want to get to their goal in the shortest possible time, regardless of how mind numbingly boring it is.

I believe what the OP is trying to do is not stop the grind per se, but stop making the grind feel like bad grind. You know, the kind of mind-numbing and immersion breaking grind that occurs when the enjoyment is taken out of the equation and replaced with a feeling of work.
