why dont I own my Game of Elite

Hi
This is a gripe.
Once again, the elite team have lauched a new update.
I know this because my game "unapollogetically informs me" that I will not be able to play elite untill I update... Thats right, Elite have removed my permission to play my own game, even in practice mode!!
So I ask you - who owns this game? me or them?? I get no choice in the matter..
There are no questions, no compromise, no bargaining; I cant evem say - Oh well let me play it thismorning, and I'll update this afternoon, while I am doing other things.
NO!! I (and everyone else) are BANNED from playing elite untill we comform.
And here I was thinking I bought the game..

Then, I have to prove who I am via email - and then after all that the dowload time to update is about 2 hours!!
So, at any time, I could face another 2 hour update.

Just update you wally. :p

No online game lets you play with an out of date version.

And your update only takes 2 hours to download?
Christ! I have to set mine to download overnight!
The 2.4 update took 7 hours to download for my PC. And I need to update my laptop's version aswell, which will likely be another 7 hours, unless I can do it sneakily on my works WiFi, which is about 5x faster. Lol

No complaints from me.

Mandatory updates come with the territory.
Either do the updates while you're away from your PC, or play something else while it downloads. Or heck, watch a 2 hour movie. Done.

Sitting crying about it isn't going to get you anywhere.

All online games do this from time to time, I use to play final fantasy a realm reborn which is not only a full price game, but also a subscription game and that did big updates from every now and then, even destiny has this. Its just a consequence of online games unfortunately.

But,

More than that!

Why is Steam insisting on updates and additions to a platform that I didn't really want?
They just come in and disrupt everything, and even have the indecency to suspect me of fraudulent behaviour by verifying my installation... in front of me!

I don't go to DFS to buy a new Chair for them to keep coming round bothering me at all hours, demanding identification and then nailing bits on to my new Chair, Oh yes... and here is a nest of tables too, and this spare cushion...and a loyalty Vase and picture frame with an 'achievement get'
Stop already you're filling my house up and can't find my slippers...

errr... no one held a gun to your head to use Steam.

While I found it mildly annoying that GGG's Path of Exile used to update the program almost every time I opened the Steam launcher; after a little research I found that I could control Steam from running auto-updates on any one or all of the games that I either purchased and/or downloaded through their service.

You can even launch the games you have purchased from them from going into the directory: ./steam/steamapps/common/* and run them from the executables there. You might not get the overlay, but everything should run from there without problem. You can also create a launcher for your desktop once you find the executable (can't be missed really, it usually has the icon of the game).

Frankly, your complaint while started with the game updates seemed acceptable, you're rapidly coming off the rails here and turning it into an issue you should have more knowledge of when it comes to your computer and Steam.

Wait, you guys had to wait for a download? That sucks. J/k, but I would add that I think having to authenticate in and have the bulk of cpu time being not on my cpu are good things.

Cheaters probably have a hard time modding code on FDev servers and I'm okay with authenticating in for that piece of mind.

Uh , oh, uhm... uhmm... wwwhat?

This is a game in the middle of development. Continuous updates are part of the plan.

Just play something else until the update has finished.

EDIT:
I forgot to add: Jeeeeeezzzz...

Oh you Steam fanbois are such a defensive breed... I know all about the procedure to control Steam on my computer, I was simply having a bit of fun, us oldies are prone to doing that while we wait for our cocoa to cool and our bedsocks to warm up!

Oh, and by the way, I didn't mention anything about game updates... that was the other other fellow 'Grit'

Also, despite what I've read elsewhere, you can have a steam independent install of the game and you can do everything just like non-steam normal if you don't use the launcher.

Steam also makes you buy credits in order to purchase from the ED store and that usually results in buying more "credits" than you would need if you just bought the dang paint job outright. Well, you don't have to do that either. You can buy straight from FDev and it updates your account. I just give my money straight to FDev because I love this game. I use steam as a central repository for a lot of my games. When I buy an add on, I go straight to the ED store and FDev gets my money. I love this game too much I think.

-- That is, if you bought the game and then activated your steam code. If you bought through steam... I have no idea.

Them. You have paid for the right to use the software, under the terms set out in the end user licence agreement. And the terms include this:

We may deploy or provide patches, updates and modifications to the Game that must be installed in order for you to continue to play the Game. We may update the Game remotely (including without limitation the Game client on your device), and you hereby grant us your consent to deploy and apply such patches, updates and modifications.

Well that escalated quickly.

Please cut out the personal comments.

Yaffle, it wasn't an insult 'Grit' was the original poster for the subject, and I'm not offended in the least by MBaldelli reprimanding me for seeming to have no knowledge of Steam :)

In fact information he gave is accurate and to the point!

If you want to play a modern online game keeping updated is just part of the bargain.

Just copy the files over to your laptop, then verify from the launcher. This also works if you have a friend nearby who's already dl'd the game and/or has faster net etc.

I usually do, but for some odd reason, it just downloads the entire thing again. But only with ED:H. All other games let me copy them and work fine. Lol

I don't even play ED on my laptop anymore anyway. Since about 2.2~ my laptop has been really struggling, unless I turn supersampling down to 0.5.
Then everything is unreadable. Lol
I'm surprised it still starts at all to be honest. The laptop is about 7 years old. :p

Really? Haven't tried it in a while, I only did it once to see how badly it'd run on my All-In-One and it worked fine (the transfer not the game, that ran like molasses), but it used to work.
