Huh, must have missed that. Seems pretty cool actually and I don't see any mention of "groups getting access to insider information" so I'll assume best intentions from FD on that one for now. Thanks for digging it out for me tho.

You asked for examples of 'prior preferential treatment' not 'groups getting access to insider information' which is not what I said.

And while it might seem cool, when some player groups are onto having multiple CGs hosted for them and others still havent been put into the game, somethings amiss with the community management model.

Sorry, you used that phrase in response to Ed's email that said "just wanted to clear up that we absolutely do not feed groups with any private, secret or privileged information" so I assumed that was what you were hinting at. Apologies if I was mistaken.

No dramas old chap. All Im saying is that when youve seen these things unfurl (such as hotfixing a year known BGS issue within days of hit one of the preferred groups with conmunity manager access), to some it seems entirely plausible, particulalry in this case where outside of someone telling the player, or data mining, that the devs may have been feeding info out.

Apart from boosting the share price of bacofoil, is there any point to keeping this thread open?

In amongst the wild speculation and accusations, I've seen plenty of reasonable and plausible suggestions as to dubious methods people could employ in order to locate things.

If the dev's, and the mod's here, have any sense they might learn something from the information and suggestions being provided rather than simply shutting down the discussion.

I dunno, I feel like it may have been a mistake made by a QA tester, who played on the live server, with an active friends list.

Someone on that friends list noticed where they were...

Then the miraculous discovery occurs.

Like someone said, "Nothing was intentionally leaked"

It is unlikely that QA and QA account users are unaware of such implications and would use their accounts in such ways.

This thread needs more tinfoil.
At this point I doubt anyone would be satisified with a response from FD anyway...

Oh but there is one response I would be satisfied with and that's the one that'll make the following statement to be no longer true.

Given the dearth of game mechanics to search for these things in an engaging and satisfying way I'm not too fussed how it was done, as I'll only hear of it from external media anyway. If it was data mining or indiscreet hints, it isn't particularly a good thing for the game or the players, but it shows that we need more in the way of gameplay. Hopefully the Beyond series will cover this in some way as I think this shows it is sorely needed.

As it is the total absence of in game tools to find anything gives rise to the kind of speculation you see in this thread and if the narrative is as important to FD as they say it is they might want to do something about that.

Hello,

Just wanted to clear up that we absolutely do not feed groups with any private, secret or privileged information in order to progress the story.
In all honesty, we're consistently blown away by how quickly players find these things we've put in to the game. Players have used star maps, trailers, and lots of other different ways to find interesting locations in the past. Ways we didn't expect... ways that challenge us to make even more interesting and tricky ways to unlock new information.
It's worth mentioning that data mining is against the EULA, and we do not condone this way of gaining data or information about the game (or other similar ways of obtaining this information that goes way above my technical understanding). We implore people to not spoil the experience of others... it's just not cool quite frankly.

Once again, the implication that we're feeding information to players is incorrect, and that sort of speculation is potentially harmful... so try to avoid doing that. Thanks.

Ed

I would like to take this opportunity to say, "I am woefully wrong and I apologize for any harm done by my post."

In all seriousness, I do apologize and am sorry for any mayhem this has caused. I may have been a bit salty due to lack of caffeine yesterday morning.

As stated, I do love this game. I have been playing for 2+ years now and have no real intention of ever stopping. If it helps, we can lock this thread?

:O Reduce all your graphic settings to the absolute minimum (planets looks like yoghurt at this stage, hence the term), try to find "contrasty" lighting conditions, and something I like doing : licking the surface upside down with the camera angled straight up your head........:x what a game.

Actually, your thread has helped to take a lot of discussion about the suspicions away from the INRA In Game thread, to leave that one to discuss (mostly) the search for the missing base in the teaser trailer. Otherwise, the INRA thread would be a terrible mess !

Funny thing, I don't find it particularly easy to find things in Elite and frankly I don't think making things harder to find is the right response. I for one am not at all interested in reading how someone made clever use of external tools to find stuff FD has hidden in the game nor am I all that excited about visiting those places once they're discovered. What I would like is to be given the tools to "discover" these things for myself and I would very much like these tools to be in game and easy enough for all to use.

I'm not asking to be the first, all I want to have the means to follow this narrative that is rumored to be in the game without having to resort to google searches and notepads with system names an coordinates.

(I heard this narrative is really kewl, I wouldn't know cuz all I've seen so far is disjointed fragments that make very little sense)

How do you mean?

Clearly, the people involved didn't fully consider the implications of how the friend list has an influence on instancing and has an effect on the level of participation people could expect from the event.

I said it before but I'd hope that FDev QA testers have alt-accounts for when they're doing "official" stuff and that they've got specific guidelines regarding how they manage those accounts but I wouldn't bet my house on those procedures being foolproof.
