Oh no....oops

It's at time like these I really appreciate the ED community, thanks for all the messages of support...it does help :)

I'm actually quite philosophical about the whole thing, I knew the risks, I made a mistake...end of. I'm not looking for FDev to change the game or refund me for my error....it sucks but it happens.

I'm also keenly aware it's a game and on the scale of human suffering it doesn't even register.

After a few minutes of feeling stupid and a bit sorry for myself I've moved on and it's really not an issue, the credits, the discoveries and data, all of that is slightly meaningless compared to the time sunk into the journey. That's time I could have spent doing something else...it's a sobering thought and I might take my foot off the gas a little with gaming in general for a while. I don't particularly regret the journey however, saw some cool things, went to Sag A.

Now it's time to get on with some of the content in the bubble, engineer my ships, earn some credits etc and I'm looking forward to that.

I'm not sure I'll go exploring again (not to the core anyway) until the new exploration mechanics are launched in Q4 next year and hopefully by then I'll have engineered my ship to give me a bigger jump range and can do it more efficiently and see some of the new features FDev bring to the galaxy.

Cheers guys & gals....see you in the black ;)

Interesting side note - I recently flew the AspX again, and MAN are the directional thrusters (particularly reverse) on that thing weak, it's a real death trap if you're going too fast and can't boost! Heck even if you CAN boost its dangerous!

Directional thrusters on most ships aren't up to much. If I find I am heading too quickly towards a planet, I point the nose straight up and use main thrusters. This has saved me on a few occasions.

I've overshot landing pads in that more often than I have in my Corvette, Anaconda or T9.

The brakes are in the nose. Just drop the nose onto the pad while you are thrusting downwards, and you'll come to a complete stop. Works in any ship (at least, any ship that I have flown), even a Cutter.

EDIT: To be clear, obviously these aren't brakes. :D But I like to land as fast as possible, and the nose brake trick seems to be the way to do this.

That's harsh :(
It would be enough to make me uninstall and not play for like 6 months.
Here's kitten therapy:

A commemorative song for ye:

Queen makes everything a little bit better.

I've not yet dared venture out past a week, lest the lack of anything to actually do drive me to autocide, and even after a week I start getting twitchy and that Self Destruct button becomes more and more tempting, like it's calling to me.

Commiserations, CMDR. I'm getting a terrible sense of deja vu...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/244321-Worst-Boost-Ever?p=3797340

A suggestion: bookmark the planet where you "died" (and make a note of memorable surface features if possible) then, when you eventually feel the inexorable draw of the great empty calling you back, make a pilgrimage to your crash site. Of course there'll be nothing there but memories and goosebumps as you descend, but believe me when I say it's sort of cathartic.

(It would be very cool if the game could remember the last few player crash sites and populate them with suitable wreckage for moments like this, but maybe the database overheads would be too much).

OMG...I think I remember reading that when you posted it and thought, that must really suck.

I know I'm not the first and definitely won't be the last....and it seems I'm in good company, maybe FDev could have a special decal for those who've pancaked on a planet or fried themselves between contact binaries whilst carrying 100m of exploration data...I'd wear that decal with pride

I feel your pain commander, I had a similar accident once but no where near as far in my journey as you - made me quit Elite for a week. But as you said it teleported you straight in to the bubble sooo thats good! :D Keep smiling and dont give up.

Hahah, that would be awesome. I think I'd be eligible, too, actually. :D

Anyway, if you find yourself pining for the void, the exploration payouts has been buffed quite extensively. If you really wanted, I think you'd be able to make up for your year of exploration in about a month or so. I've been to Colonia and back quite regularly, lately as a kind of a weekend trip and every time I bring at least 50 million worth of data back.

I feel your loss.

On the brightside... are you using EDSM / EDD?

If you are your route and first dicsoveries are recorded there and you can refer to the highlights on your next voyage.

If you are not install the tool, sync your logs and basically as above. It will even record which systems you discovered first despite your loss of data.

You -could- try asking support if they will refund all your stuff (If they can)

I hear they tend to have a "Once only" policy on refunding things such as this.

I wouldn't be too sure about it though, as it would be classed as your own fault, and they evaluate these things on a case by case basis.

Worth a shot though, I would say.

I crashed my ship on a planet of a neighboring system by Sag A. Nice to know there's more than one idiot who can't land a ship ;). Personally when it happened, I couldn't decide if I was upset or happy. I was upset from the loss of data and weeks worth of playing, but happy I didn't have to make the return trip. Now I look back at it and laugh, my friends and I crack jokes about it all the time.

Sorry about your loss commander, better luck next time!

Thanks kindly, I'm nearly home after my last expedition, which netted me 95% on Pioneer, so I'm confident (wait for the big crash and bang!) that I've got it finally, this time.. As for your comments on discussing your situation with your wife, my own is actually very impressed with the game, and is never negative about it (2 Uni degrees, 1 in Arts, and 1 in Science). In fact, after bringing me numerous mugs of tea, her common parting comment is "To Infinity, and Beyond!".

Wait for my "if only I hadn't pushed myself when feeling very tired, I'd be Elite now" moment...:p

Congrats on hitting elite explorer...when it happens.

Further to my comments last night, I'm pleased to say I finally made it! Only 2 more to go now..

Things could be worse. I slammed my Anaconda into a planet 1000ly into my journey back from Beagle point. I had to take a minute before I could rebuy!

Man that's too bad. I'm gearing up for a really long trip. I'm taking a SRV this time but after reading this thread I'll not be landing on anything over 1.5g.
rep to you for taking it on the chin.
Cheers

I landed on a world this morning that is pulling 4.02g at the surface (HR 1185 A4).

I did come in hard but I find with high g landings the best way is to make sure that, if you are going to terrain alert, come down on the ship's belly (with landing gear retracted!).

If you come down nose or bridge canopy first the load/impact is likely to be more severe.

As for the 4.02g world I belly-flopped and lost the outer ring of shields but integrity remained at 100%.

o7!
