"Beyond" free for Horizon owners - LEP musings

I have the same feeling of what you said here. When I bought LEP, the idea that I had was a 10 years development plans, 1 expansion per year. Now we know the development is gonna end at 2022, that's an 8 years plan, with season 2 spanning 3 years. By calculation, the LEP is more expensive. Personally, with this information at hand, I do feel it was a bad investment. If I have known, I would have bought each expansion during discount offers.

Although, I don't regret it to the point I'm disappointed. Elite Dangerous has been a fantastic experience. If FD needs to reroute their plan to extend the game's development longevity, I'm fully on board. I'm also glad to hear about premium contents for LEP owners. Hopefully, there are more to come. I just can't help feeling, based on my earlier assumption, I am now with an investment loss. It would take time to come to terms with it. Since this is my first LEP, ED is now a lesson of a need for careful decision before buying one.

Who told you that? First I heard. Unless you are talking about the financial report. That actually doesn't mean anything. They will keep developing it as long as it keeps making them money.

Just watched Ed's livestream, he couldn't remember what he had planned to say & just said "Don't worry about it" a few times.

At some point ED will reach feature parity, yes. Then FD will just do small and substantial improvements. I personally see at least five big dlcs coming.

I thought during frontier expo they were giving quite a few hints towards atmospheric planets of some type.

Right from walking on the stage when Ed talking about breathing in noxious gas in relation to the Co2 light effects, to right near the end talking about fog and vapour effects, which Ed made sure to again reiterate.
All hints at development of atmospheric like conditions.
The improvement to lighting also to me points towards the effect of light in say gas giants, and atmospheres of different types.

Just have to be patient and wait and see. Whatever i only expect new paid content to be announced towards the end of next year.

Just to clarify the generally accepted Premimum Content definition:-
Premium content is a type of digital content that may be accessed for a fee, and is usually of higher quality or more desirable than free content. It is mainly a digital marketing strategy that is used to differentiate between standard (free) marketing content and exceptionally informative content.
Therefore, it could apply to any type of paid for DLC...

In all likelihood, the Premium Content referred to by FD that is not cosmetic stuff is almost certainly going to be covered by the LEP.

They could, yes and in their position I guess I'd make that offer, and hope some would take it.

However as the customer if I bought a bunch of stuff on Amazon, and some of it didn't arrive because it was no longer available, I'd expect a refund for goods not delivered. I may accept an offer of a voucher, but I would expect a refund. If the product was significantly delayed I might appreciate some concession by way of apology, but I wouldn't expect it.

The good thing is, you'll probably know in the next 90 years.

well whats your point then.... why is RNGneers fundamental to the game

this "
The term pay2win comes from games where you can buy specific buffs that will directly improve your chances against others, making twice as much damage, more healing potions"
is exatly whgat RNGneers is

Not sure what you are trying to say.

Another year of waiting for such "pretty cool" things.

If you didn't like anything in the last two years it might be time to move on and find another game rather than being annoying.

Stop it. Everyone hates common sense.

Remember there will be new Frontier Expo next year :)

Hey Astral! This is a very reasonable and understandable post. Hopefully I can put your mind at ease a little.

In addition to all the content talked about at Frontier Expo, we also have some pretty cool things in the works which will be available to purchase. We're not ready to talk about them just yet so we can't give you any details but rest assured that the lifetime expansion pass owners will be looked after and will be getting their hands on premium content as part of their lifetime expansion pass before the end of 2018 and the Beyond series of updates.

I hope that helps,

Zac

Now I can not sleep until I know

:p

I am officially on the Beyond Premium Content Not Pay To Win Hype Train.

Excellent stream tonight Ed but remember 4 pips to shields and 2 to engines ;)

Doesn't mean anything? Tell that to a securities lawyer. Lying to shareholders can be grounds for a lawsuit.

What it means is FD is committed to developing the game into 2022, which is consistent with what was said in the previous year's annual report. 2022 has been their target for some time.

That doesn't necessarily mean they're going to halt development in 2022. 2022 is only as far as they're willing to commit right now.

It means a lot to me, because other forum warriors have consistently pooh-poohed the notion of a ten year plan.

So yes, they were right. There was no official 10 year plan. It's an 8 year plan.

Horizons and Beyond will take us to the midpoint of that 8 year plan.

I hope they'll extend their plans. But right now, 8 years is the only official plan there is.

8 years is just fine by me, if the game is good people will play it a lot longer, I've been playing some games for a lot longer than 10 years.

See 8 year development plan as of active development. I see big three expansions for ED - atmospheric planets, space legs and big ship space combat. They differ quite heavily in difficulty to implement, and similar to Horizons, will take different scales to implement fully.

However I don't think ED will stop existing after 8 years. More likely it will exist for long time after that due of peer to peer/hybrid model, which will allow FD to keep lights for long time with minimal resources. That's the power of their long term planning.

That means they are committed to term - which can and will be extended if player base will be large and active. Nothing them saying 'we will develop ED for 8 years' does not say they will stop to do that after 8 years. It is just indication for shareholders what they are getting into - this is our magnum opus, it won't print us huge amounts of green, but it is very important to us.

As for 10 years - David said that, and it can be taken into context of FD as a company, because he owned majority during time he said that and he is major shareholder and CEO even after serious investors have come in.

I never said that they are lying. As you said that is what they are willing to commit to with the shareholders. But if the game continues to make money, they will revise that and extend it.

To us, it is meaningless and people shouldn't look at that and say "they are going to close the game down in 2022". That is not the expected lifetime of the game, as nobody really knows and I doubt Fdev know either. But they have to put something down.
