Taking weapons n exploration

Weapons? No way. If your out on an exploration trip and get into a combat situation for whatever reason the smart commander will run.
Why risk all you data on an unknown outcome.
I will be taking a mining laser this time though.
I wish we could engineer low weight mining lasers.

If enough of us bring mining lasers on DWEII, since they don't do any damage, we can play laser tag!

Yeah, everybody wants to pack the mining laser now after Macedonica's rescue. ;)

The truth is though, that its much more wiser to collect decent amounts of jumponium than carry one mining laser around the galaxy in case you happen to get stranded in a system with planets with rings.

Forget the mining laser and collect the jumponium.

This is true, but I like to be prepared for any scenario!

With the new Thargoid threats, you have to decide if you bring none and just run away, or bring a lot.

In saying that, I brought a pulse disruptor laser to annoy my friends, as they're all shield-less explorers. Good for a laugh when they're trying to take off from a planet.

I choose run. :D

I would, but then I never fly without them.

Probably pulse weapons.

The issue most have, is weight and therefore, jump range reductions.
I am feeling a bit 'left out' here; almost alone in my opinion, or choice. Maybe I should explain.

I just like to shot things; anything, even just rocks. :D

I do for RP reasons. I don't know what I'm going to find so always fly with shields and a full compliment of light weight modded weapons.

But honestly if you want jump range increases, paper thin, no shields and weaponless works considering FDev need to insert the dangers first, although some shields to deal with pilot error is never a bad idea.

Mining laser just in case.

Youre not going to kill anyone with an exploration build, at least, not without getting tore up. Especially not a player.

If anything, some basic defenses are a good idea.

I had small prismatics on mine with an enhanced mod to shave a little weight.

Heavy duty mods on lightweight alloys add no additional weight.

I was mining once in my Type 9 when this NPC pirate came along and demanded cargo. I tried running but he started shooting. Good news the cops arrived and started beating him badly.
I got close and shot him with the mining laser before he died. I picked up a bounty for it :)
So are you sure they don't do damage?

There is no yes or no answer on this. Its entirely up to you your ship and how much range you are prepared to sacrifice to weaponise your exploration boat.
Taking into consideration a fight with a thargoid in the deepest of space is highly not recommended.

I suppose they technically do cause damage, but it is pretty small. I guess since every hull percent matters on a journey such as DWEII, we would need people with hull repair limpet just incase, or limit it to ships with shields. They make shields light up really pretty :)

Exactly. Just finished my final build for the DECN exped on the 14th. Srvs (x2) a fighter bay for giggles twin afmus and repair limpets. No weapons.
Still punching out 61ly per jump mind.

Back around launch I used to explore in an armed ship because there were NPC interdictions all over the galaxy. Honestly, I almost always just ran from them, but it was a bit of an affectation, at the same time. These days, I carry a heat sink launcher and nothing else.

There has been some talk in the Dead End Circumnavigation Expedition about carrying one railgun, engineered by Tod "The Blaster" to have the Plasma Slug side effect. This makes ammunition come out of your fuel tank, which makes it borderline useful for fine tuning the amount of fuel you're carrying in order to manage jumps at the ragged edge of your jump range.

That said, there are Thargoids out there, at least around the Pleiades. Who's to say we won't run into more hostiles somewhere. FDev have hinted at it. Still, until someone encounters something that changes my mind, my money is on running from trouble. :D

Even if the Thargoids are all through out the galaxy, how does that really change the weapons situation? Unless we encounter new, never before seen, really lightly armed and shielded Thargoids that are super fast with huge mass locks that somehow prevent high waking, anything short of a combat load with the intent of engaging and destroying them is pointless. We are still left with all or nothing...either go with a full combat ship designed to fight, or weaponless designed to run. There is no sensible middle ground.

There are various schools of thought regarding whether taking weapons on exploration trips is really necessary. They range from "No" to "Pfft". I personally subscribe to the "REALLY?????" school. I feel this fully encompasses the futility of doing so without being obtuse about it.

I do hope this enlightens you. :p

Even for a non-pew player, heads up that one or more lightweight railguns w/ plasma slug can be used to drain the fuel tank to a precise desired level.

Yup not necessary for exploration once outside the bubble...but you know...YOU JUST KNOW...we'll soon hear about an explorer getting ganked out in the black by random Thargoids.

It will be that day that ALL our jump ranges decrease cause we'll be packin' heat. Until we hear about that unlucky explorer who first gets blown up by aliens in the black, leave the weapons in the bubble.

A rail gun with the plasma slug mod is not so much a weapon as jury-rigged tool for fine grained control of fuel levels...
