[Video] Elite: Dangerous is too hard...sniffle...

Just a fun video, no harm intended...

I play a few games other than Elite: Dangerous [I know, right?. I like to play around...]

One thing I've read on the Forums/Reddit/bathroom stalls is that Elite: Dangerous has a steep learning curve and is "too hard" for the average player. Not true!

DCS A-10-C is without doubt the most complex simulation I play. It's hard as heck and I love it. I've included a very brief video showing just part of the "Navigation" tutorial, which is only 1 of 20 separate tutorials. You need to devote a minimum of 50 hours just learning the systems before you can even think of bombing Sadaam's palace. Food for thought. Cheers!

Yup, ED is not a simulation, in any shape.

I used to religiously play F/A-18 Hornet 3.0, which often ended in my death. Alot.
I don't think I ever completed the 6 mission campaign. Lol
Although once, in my finest moment of flying, I flew threw a hangar, with my gear up, really fast. And didn't die.

But I did crash in to a tree shortly after.

Carrier landings were fun. Terrifying, but fun. Again, I also died a lot. Even take off went wrong half the time.

ED is more aimed at fun, than realism.

I actually used to play a hell of a lot of simulation games, both jet and helicopter. Some had manuals that took me weeks to read. Lol

Oh man, I remember the days of figuring out how to properly fly the F16 in Falcon 4.0 and later FalconAF, as well as properly make use of all the radar modes and weapon systems. I usually wonder what an actual simulator of space faring ships would be like if we were to scale that experience.

There is atleast one I know of, but I can't remember the name of it. Lol

But it takes like 5 minutes just to get your ship powered up and ready.
Probably a bit too sim like. :D

ED is a simulation of craft with vastly more automation and many more fight aids than is typical of combat aircraft developed in the 1960s and 70s.

As for whether ED is to hard for the average player, I guess that depends on who qualifies as an 'average' player. Personally, I would not be surprised if some of the people that can't figure out the basics of Elite: Dangerous also have difficulty counting without their finger, tying their velcro shoes, or understanding that different denominations on notes of paper money mean different values. I would also not be surprised to discover these are wholly average people.

I had Falcon 4.0, and still have the manual kicking about (and its huge!)

I always played it in fun beginners mode, one day I went for the hardest settings on the basis of "why not?"

My mission was simple.... supress SAM defences around a North Korean airfield for a B-52 strike
I never even made it to the DMZ before getting shot down [knocked out]

Elite is fairly simple in comparision, although tricky when you get your first sidey

A tip of the hat to all you flight sim aces, I preferred the WWII flight sims, not as complicated but I did have fun, even when the Zeroes got on my tail of my early war USN planes, the Japanese ace NPC's were pretty agile.

I can't say I ever properly dodged a SAM, despite all the training scenarios and tutorials, the alarms merely threw me into a spastic choreography of yanks and pulls that sometimes seemed to actually confused the dreaded thing allowing me to stay on the air xD

On the other hand, I was never able to contribute jackcrap when playing IL-2. No way for me to see or identify bogies without a radar. So a tip of the hat to you too sir.

This was my first ever flight simulator.

:D

Ok, I know, there are older ones, but I was like, 8 when I got that. Lol

I also had LHX attack chopper. Lol

I'd love to play Rogue System and Children of a Dead Earth, but as they are only available on Steam and I rather manually castrate myself with my teeth than give Valve any money, I'll stick old-school sims for that sort of fix.

Lol seems a bit irrational to hate Steam that much. Any reason? Or just cuz' it's cool to hate Steam? :p

I hate EA with a passion, but I still use origin to play their crappy games. Lol
(I should I say, "I used to use origin"? Because I no longer play their crappy games lol)

DRM in general offends me, and I generally only tolerate the sort that isn't easily removed (which is still insulting) in online-only products.

I also don't like being beholden to anyone else for continued access to my games library. If Valve vanished, anyone who got their games via Steam would be out of luck...sure Valve has stated that if something happens to them they'll push out an emergency patch to remove need for the client, but anyone who takes that seriously is delusional. Safest assumption is that people stop working when they stop being paid and if Valve goes under, you're screwed.

I don't use anything that requires Origin or Uplay either, for precisely the same reasons.

Outside of my online-only games, which I went into knowing they were online-only and what that implied, all of my games will work fine if I am the last person on Earth, connected to no computer networks at all.

How will you find time to play computer games when you'll be responsible for maintaining nuclear/hydro-electric/solar/coal/ng power stations?

I used to play Falcon 4 Allied Force in hardcore mode. That included a 5 minute startup of engine and avionics, calibrating the Nav system, taxi out and take off. Threading the needle between Sam sites and AAA for that 2 minutes of terror over the target.
I seldom used stand off munitions so got real good at planting a couple of Mk84 dumb bombs onto factories. Dog-fighting was mostly BVR but the radar was so complex, it was far from easy. Plus, if anyone thinks fuel scooping is hard, try plugging into a fuel tanker while getting AWACS updates and managing three wingmen.
