Scanning the crashed Thargoid Scout Ship

Just to share something that might help others...

I went to have a look at the crashed Thargoid Scout Ship.

Not sure if it's a bug or if there's some reason for it but it's a PITA to scan.
Get close to it in your SRV and it'll appear in your "Contacts" HUD but there's no marker visible to point your scanner at.
Play around with your SRV's thrusters and you'll realise that the marker is actually a couple of hundred metres underground, below the visible wreckage.
I faffed around for over an hour, trying to complete the scan but I couldn't manage to keep my SRV pointed at the marker using thrusters.

Now for the helpful part...

Get in front of the Scout Ship.
Take a run-up and use your thrusters to fly up onto the top of it, facing the debris trail.
Edge forward so you're just about to fall off the edge of the Scout Ship.
Keep going, a bit at a time, using the handbrake to stop quickly.

You should be able to get into a position where you're facing the marker and able to scan it fairly easily. [up]

Here's a pic of how you need to get your SRV positioned:-

FWIW, I think there's something iffy about the way the crash site is pasted into the game.

If you quit to the main menu and then reload the game while you're in your SRV you'll see the planet surface appear, then a bunch of rocks appear "in mid air" and then some extra "ground" appears, along with the scout ship.

I'm guessing that, perhaps, this isn't a terribly efficient way of rendering the surface and, as a result, the "pasted-in" crash scene doesn't get as many resources from the GPU as it deserves.
My GFX card isn't terrific but it usually renders specific things in reasonable detail and "cheaps out" on things in the distance but it seems to do the opposite at the Scout crash site.

Is it supposed to be that low res texture? I noticed it seemed to be really blurry when I visited it the other day. Completely different to all the other textures such as the rocks, my ship or the SRV.

Not been there myself but the first screenshots I saw had extremely high quality textures.

That's what I thought. I was quite disappointed and surprised when I visited it for myself. I may fly back again and play around with my settings to see if it improves.

My visit to the scout had much higher res textures.

Turning down the planetary settings may have something to do with it, I have those on med/high i think. There may be some gfx memory threshold that causes it to swap in lower object textures.

There seems to be a texture bug i've noticed since the patch..Sometimes a texture decides not to load properly and it just dosent load properly. I noticed it in my Anaconda, i looked down and the QWERTY keyboard in my annie looked like someone just smeared olive oil on my contact lenses.... It didnt fix until i loaded out of the ship and back in. It could just be that.

It might actually make sense. Considering the POI is 500m away (underground to be precise) the game might treat it as being furhter away than the terrain and rocks.

It does appear in a "contacts" HUD while in SRV, but if this crashed ship don't have visible marker, how the hell can I scan it? I,m here close to 2 hrs and still nothing:(
Please help me... someone....

I positioned in front of it, a few meters away from the dirt it piled up, targeted it via contacts/nav panel, flipped my SRV on the side and used the turret to scan it.
Was pretty easy, but I might just have been lucky.

Erm, that's kind of the entire point of this thread.

Position your SRV as shown in the pic' I posted and you'll be able to scan the marker.

I've noticed this as well. Particularly the SRV bay walls.

For me personally I managed to scan the scout ship when I flipped the SRV. The method shown on the pic by hanging over the edge of the ship did not work for me, as I always fell down.
Thx for the hints on how to finally scan that darn ship.
