Someone tried to steal my cargo and I got punished? What gives?

So, I'm travelling within a system with some expensive cargo. A npc sidewinder pulls me out of Super Cruise. Tells me not to worry. Then tells me my cargo is now his. I figure he's a pirate so I deploy hardpoints and attack. Seeing he's only one little ship I should be able to outfly him pretty easily. I do. But as soon as I hit him. I get a bounty. And I kill him without taking a shot. Next thing I know I'm being chased for murder ... OF A PIRATE???? lol Should we wait until they start attacking. Seems pretty silly to me. As soon as they threaten you you should be able to respond how you like.

Yes, you need to wait for them to start attacking you, UNLESS you target and scan them and it says "wanted" on the info. Then you're free to open fire.

I agree though, this is something the devs should fix at some point. NPC pirates pulling interdictions and making demands should have NO EFFECT on your standing with the system if you choose to open fire.

If you accept a 'kill pirates' mission, this wrinkle also affects you. You need to wait for a pirate to attack you, not just fly to a USS and attack the (wanted) pirate immediately.

Agree, you should not have to scan them to be allowed to shoot first, if they are wanted, that should be enough.

I was interdicted twice in one trip.
I was 'pirated' by both. I waited for the first to fire, but he didn't hit me. When I hit him, I was wanted.

Eventually he scarppered off into supercruise.

I did the same, was interdicted again, pirated, waited until he'd hit me, then opened fire. I was again wanted.

Ended up with two pirates worth of bounties on my head.

And this was my first tip anywhere.

Not a good start.

The moment I am interdicted, I max out engines and shields and boost away. As soon as the FSD is back online, I just warp out. In a crumby Sidewinder, it is just not worth aggravation of dogfighting IMO

Cops are the same everywhere. Probably they'll tell you you should have performed a citizen's arrest.

This isn't in the known issues list...

Is this where the 'kill warrent' scanner comes in?

I wonder that too but I haven't got one yet. I'll let you know soonish, seeing as the NPCs seem easier to kill than in PB2...

look at it from the cops point of view....

Someone said something to you, so you pulled out some lasers and killed him.

But seriously, there seems to be a little balancing issue at the point where the game decides who performed the first criminal act in an altercation. If you think that its currently 'off' then open a ticket and report it. We are here to help find these issue.

well lets try the analogy:

you walk on the streets and in front of you there is a man and he yells "ah im going to rob this bank now" , you shoot him.

you guilty for shooting an innocent man, or not? ^^

I think the solution here could be to

1) make interdicting a pilot an offence worthy of a (low) bounty in itsself unless you have a contract allowing it - so police or military vehicles or qualified bounty hunters who have a contract for a specific target.

2) as a pilot make sure you lock on before you fire..... by locking on you automatically scan them.

3) if the pirates are in a squad, all of them get the (small) bounty attached to them not just the one who actually caused the interdiction to occur.

(2) is important becasue, what if 2 pilots were flying near each other (but not together) and you all dropped out of SC in the same area.... in theory it is possible you could accidentally fire on an innocent just because they happen to be in the vicinity of a pirate.

I agree with this entirely. Interdiction by anyone other than authority vessels in itself should be made a crime.

You don't pull in front of cars to make them stop just to say hello.

but what if they only want to clean your windshield? ^^

Which happened to me yesterday.
I was interdicted by 1 pirate, but there were 2 other ships there too. He opened fire, I opened fire and one of the neutral ship passed in front of my lasers :D, got a bounty on my head, was annoyed at this so I killed the neutral, got an even bigger bounty on my head, so I killed the second neutral, glad the bounty I got for killing the pirate covered most of the bounties on my head

This is an excellent improvement idea and I +1 it!

I believe this would be the solution.

I want to make a quick point to update my experiences from the past few hours, all of which are great.

*I was interdicted by an eagle who demanded my cargo. I scanned him, saw that his record was clean, and held fire. I was carrying nothing, and a moment later he said "no cargo? waste of time." He took off, I went on my way.

*I was interdicted again with cargo in my hold. Same thing happened; the pirate's record was clean, and I held fire. I waited for him to start shooting at me, giving him a "WANTED" designation, and wrecked him hard. I got a bounty voucher.

*Got interdicted a third time, scanned, saw the pirate was wanted, opened fire before he did, got a bounty voucher again.

Long story short, SCAN THEM. If they're wanted, you're all good. If not, wait for it. I haven't had a problem so far following this simple method. A straightforward game mechanic to be sure, though it might not be intuitive as has been said.
