Taking the plunge for a Space Cow (T-9)

Hello CMDR's

I am about to pull the trigger on a Type 9 Heavy tonight and I wanted some feedback on the build that I am looking at:
https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/typ...EweloBhA2AWNhQKYEMDmAbJIQEYIFA==&bn=Karakoram

I added engineering mods (random rolls) for the engineers and mats I have ready to go (might try to get the G5 dirty drives on the ASAP but will start with type-3).

What do I want with this ship?

I want an armed build just in case I get interdicted by small fry. Please note that I play PVE solo only and I am not skilled at combat but I can hold my own against NPC's. I don't want to D-rate to make things lighter, but I would like feedback on how I can improve the weapons and defensive systems. I am also considering adding a fighter, though that's 32t of cargo gone. I want to keep things under 200MCr and I don't do Powerplay so I don't have any PP special modules. In addition to CG's and bulk trading I am going to do lots of haulage missions now that they are on-par with passenger missions.

I already have an Anaconda and I use it for general mission running so please no feedback on getting "better ships". I know other ships are better in some ways, but I want to get the Type-9 just for fun! In fact, I am using this ship to take a much needed break from grinding Imperial Rank near the Cubeo system (Though I must confess, I might use it for some Imperial haulage missions; why not? 400t of biowaste to Bracewell Port just for fun!)

Any suggestions on improving this build will be most welcome!

o7 and thanks in advance!

If you are only in Solo or private you can ditch the shields. I run with an engineered hull 2800 armour health, two Cascade grade 5 torpedo launchers and three grade 5 seekers, zero issue with any npc ship of any rank. Currently have a fighter bay on-board with 2 ships and a few other toys (SRV/Collector limpet controller), current cargo capacity is only 416 tonnes, however I can get rid of the toys and bump up the cargo if needed.

Current role is mission hauling and gathering stuff for engineers, also have another that is a pure mining ship. LvL-5 FSD upgrade is a must, even with the heavy armour she still does 21LY, and well over a 100Ly's without the need to refuel.

Personally, and I'm no expert, but I'd get your shield mj up as high as possible, as well using military bulkheads, so you can tank all that incoming fire. The difference between d rated and a rated core internals is negligible, so just go for the jump range, your never going to outrun or outturn anything, a cutter can run literal rings around you. Then get shock mines. People say mines are terrible but shock mines will slow your enemy down, allowing you a better chance of escape.

Those are only my opinions of course, if you feel safe in a build, fly that, last thing you want to be is nervous behind the wheel and panic.

Shieldless would be cool. How about this?

I don't have any of the missile engineers done yet, what do you think of the efficient beams?

Thanks for the feedback! I'll go for the military composite, but yeah I might go shieldless? If I drop the turrets I'll drop the sensors down to D-rated. However, regarding the engines I have seen some posts showing the A-rated thrusters does improve the ship's handling somewhat? It's not nervousness, its just want a bit better performance while flying around? I might replace the MC's with shock mines as well though that would be interesting.

Looks good, fine for PvE. Beams are fine on that build since you don't need PIPS in the SYS capacitor for shields. I stick with missiles/torps because I know it works 100% even against an Elite Anaconda, there is also 0 drain on the WEP capacitor. Have always thought a bug exists in the AI logic, you can pummel them with missiles, they'll spend the entire time taking evasive maneuvers as opposed to trying to seriously fight back. Makes things a little too easy but it works.

Whatever your build, test it out on some easy AI until you feel comfortable.

I also D-rated the thrusters and engineered them.

Edit - If you want a great region of space ideal for T9 haulage missions, head to the old I-Bootis cluster, (Opala,Chi Hercules, Styx) a huge amount of star systems all next to each, multiple surface and orbital ports, most of the surface ports are located on very scenic planets (Mountain ranges/small rocky worlds etc)

My home base for short haul operations is in Chi Hercules, station is Bridger town, a mountainous moon orbiting extremely close to an Earth like world. The scenery around here really makes trucking worth it, money is great, especially if allied.

Thanks. Last one. What if I mix it up a bit? This way the beams can fire forever? Incorporated some of mrat's feedback as well and added module protection?

Now I can't wait to get home from work!

Just don't forget, OP, 777Driver is the best Type-9 jockey around. Things he can do with that thing seem... improbable. :D

If you are new to the handling of this beast, running shieldless build will hurt. It won't kill you, with engineered hull, but it can hurt your wallet real bad. ;)

Yeah I am loving this feedback. I can handle my Beluga and my Anaconda OK through the mail slot so I am used to driving some of the larger ships and I am hoping the docking computer should protect me from too many bumps and bruises? But yeah if I am bleeding money then the shield-less experiment will be over pretty quick. I'm excited to try it though!

On occasion I fly a T9. Mine has turrets all round (Beam and Cannon) set to fire at will. I have a fighter bay and an Expert pilot. 5A shields and a mix of heat sinks as well as boosters. Standard bulkheads (light weight). No Engineering. I find I can engage medium ships in civilised space no problem if the law shows up half way through and with only a slight bit of damage if I have to take them alone. Larger ships do cause me a problem but high waking works and I haven't died yet.

The T9 is quite low down on my ship list but it does make a great mining ship and sneaking it through the slot with 400 tons on board is a great feeling.

Based on all this you may just want to wait for the T10.
The T9 is a lover not a fighter.
Sure you can fight in it but...why?
For all the martial spirit being shown here you may be happier with an Anaconda.
And I say this with the T9 being my favorite ship.

.

You often don't have a choice, I uploaded a video last night, dropping in and out of the instance, peacefully scooping Chemical Manipulators from a Bulk Cargo ship, had mission cargo onboard, constantly harassed by pirates, popped them off one by one, quite satisfying.

Not exactly challenging AI, however It's no fun having to run from everything.

I think the Type-10 could be a while yet but I may trade in the Type-9 for it when it arrives. I'm bored of my Anaconda and my Python and am especially bored of the Cutter grind (made Count a few nights ago, need a break) so I wanted to try something different and give the Type-9 a go. I've always wanted to try it but I was letting the grind get in the way because the Anaconda is often more effective overall from a min/max standpoint. I just want some guns on the Type-9 so I don't suffer the indignity of running from an NPC Hauler or Adder when doing haulage missions. I'd rather get the 7000 credits for doing my part to restore law and order and then be on my way.

God speed and god bless in your T9 awesomeness Cmdr!
Great ship!
And sorry. Missed the part where you already had a Conda...my 2nd favorite ship.

Do yourself a favour, do the Dirty Drives first. Excellent chance you'll lose interest in it after that anyway. If not then at least you'll know you are one of the few people who are Type 9 tolerant. Statistically speaking this could save you a lot of time on engineering.

@OP

I wouldn't be too concerned about arming yourself against small fry type ships. I find that interdictions aren't too bad and you can just submit if you want, and jump out without issues (they aren't going to be able to size lock you). Just have systems set to 4 pips and boost where you can)

Alternatively, when an NPC invariably gives away their position as the request a trade in 'Juicey cargo', just drop out of SC (make sure you reach safe dropping speed first) and boost until they pop in. Once they do that the NPC will waste a few seconds asking you to show your wares. Meanwhile, you can charge your FSD and low wake on out.

That should buy you enough time to put some decent distance.

If the interdictor / 'cargo tradesman' is alittle bigger ... like say a Python and up, I'd definitely suggest trying to get as close as you can to your station before attempting the latter

I think I get what your saying with the python? Not that exciting when trading in it, but, at least for me, I find sitting in it cruising from system to system, is so relaxing. Just put on some music or a podcast, grab some food and drink, and just go, for jump after jump after jump.

As you can tell, I like the python :).

The Python is awesome. I love mine and it plays a key role for me. I just really want to try the T-9 for a new experience :) Picked up my shiny new T-9 and I’m already in Deciat to begin the process of turning this turkey into a mean ostrich!

Oh, and I just remembered....

If your count in empire you have access to the clipper right? If you want to try something new, smuggle imperial slaves from a zemina torval controlled system (power play, she sells slaves cheaper), to an archon delaine black market (black market prices increased). Not gonna be insane amount of money, but should be different enough for you and also fun trying to not get caught.
