EDDiscovery or Captains Log

I'm heading back out for an extended trip here soon (Nov 22nd) and I want to get a consensus from my fellow explorers on which program is better. Which do you prefer and why.
I'm not computer savvy at all.
So I'm looking for easy to install, easy to use.
They both look rather complicated but that's just me being me most likely.

All input is much appreciated.

Thank You

I can only speak from personal experience, EDDiscovery is amazing. I use it to dictate the route I take when exploring, to tell me the habitable zone, estimated payout and great record keeping.
I haven't really used Captains log so can't comment on that :)

Why not both? :)

The excellent EDDiscovery is like a Swiss Army Knife of exploration and general playing the game - it's got a lot of features.

My Captain's Log has less features than EDD, but concentrates on what I think an explorer needs whilst out there in the Void.

Many people use both - and more in fact, when exploring.

Speaking for Captain's Log, it's easy to install, easy to set up, and should be very straightforward to use.

That depends: better for what? What are you looking for?

Although I think you'll find that most people use EDDiscovery more, as it does more things - and as a big added bonus, it's open source.

If you want an easy way to upload your finds to EDSM (EDDN) and EGO, you'll likely want to go with EDDiscovery.

EDD is easy to install and pretty easy to use if you just want the basic features of recording your travels. It can do a lot more than just that but you can leave all the extra stuff alone or have a browse of our wiki (on the github page, see the link in my sig) and see what else interests you. I couldn't live without the summary panel showing me scan results over the top of the game any more but it's entirely up to you.

We, the EDD dev team, are always happy to help if you hit any problems or have questions about how to do something - just jump on our forum thread, github issues page or discord channel (all linked from the Help menu in the app).

I use both. In the pic below you'll find three overlays. The on in the middle is CL2 and I simply can't live without it. The ones on the left and right corner are EDD. On the left corner is the shopping list for mats and on the right is the summary panel that also shows for 60 seconds all details for the last scan. The habitable zone is very useful to track down terraformables too. Both are excellent and easy to install. Both have top-notch customer support.

I'm liking them both too. I might go with a basic version of EDD. I don't need to have lots of fancy stuff. However I do want to upload my finds to EDSM (EDDN) and EGO.
I'm a bit worried about performance of running both at the same time. My rig is rather old and probably not the best for multi-tasks.
I'll post my specs here later (still at work) and maybe you can tell me if its feasible.

Friend me again Iain. For whatever reason my friends list got wiped awhile back.

Thanks

Captains Log is (or started as) a standalone logging tool that did not require an account with a web site or any internet access at all. That was and is what sets it apart. If you just want to log your data without sending it to the internet for others to see, that's your tool.

ED Discovery or EDMC both sync data to EDSM, EDDN and EGO
ED Discovery gives you local access to your data but EDMC only sends it to the web without any interfaces for you to view, search or map locally.

EDSM is a terrific site and I highly recommend setting up an account and using ED Discovery.
You can access and share with others your flight logs, ship details, inventory and map of your travels.

You should only run one of these tools at a time. You don't want two or more syncing the same data.
Journal logging happens no matter what, even if you aren't running any of them. All of them will read your journal files after the fact, so they don't all need to be running while the game is running.
If you want scan data and jump information to be synced to EDSM and EDDN as you go, you'll want ED Discovery running.
If you want to use Captains Log, you can open that any time and the data will be there.

I used to use EDMC when I was in the bubble so it could send market data and ship outfitting data, and I would use ED Discovery when I was out of the bubble on a trip.
Now ED Discovery gathers and sends market data so I don't see any advantage for EDMC now.
