T9 for exploration

Dont forget the Keelback, which can fit a fighter bay and offer some "uniqueness" :)

Fitting restrictions mean compromises have to be made and the hangar can only print 6 fighters...I've used more than that in a single weekend just learning how to fly them. That being said, the KB isn't a bad ship, it's just not a great one either and no such compromises have to be made with the t9 with even enough spare slots fer a cargo rack after everything I want is already fitted. I'd say the KB was better suited to short range whereas the t9 will be out fer months hopefully.

I share the same approach... :)

What are you driving IRL, if I may ask? :)

Alfa Romeo q2 Ducati corse...170bhp standard remapped to 212bhp...very few left on uk roads with a right hand drive conversion, and apart from the remapping, has been kept completely original spec including the diamond cut custom one off 18inch wheels. Owned it from new and will never part with it...not ever ^

Man, if it was possible to fit a much bigger FSD+Thrusters, I'd be tempted. What I really want is a "Type 8 Explorer" that is a lighter, downsized version of the T9, with a jump range comparable to the AspX or Anaconda.

As it is, I'm having a hard time giving up my AspX, and am only now talking myself into giving the Anaconda a good try. It's just hard to switch to a big ship without those wonderful Lakon views, when using VR. :)

I took my Anaconda on a 66kly trip just recently (and not to Beagle Point!). On the return leg about 10Kly out, I started just buckyballing back home. The handling in supercruise just became too much to the point that I was actually asking myself "Yes, I know it's a undiscovered, water world that is a candidate for terra-forming... but it's behind me. Do I really want to flip this thing around...and then back again?" And yes...I left some out there because the answer that night was "no."

I love the Anaconda....saved up for almost two years to get one. I just can't explore in it.

hmm. this is what worries me. I do enjoy my Asp-x, particularly the views. The solution would be a shuttle that is limited to supercruise that can land and deploy a SRV.

The Anaconda cockpit is incredibly restrictive compared to the AspEx's. Not to mention the forward portion of the ship sticking out into space that's constantly in view. I plan on docking back up in Colonia Dream later this evening to wait out T-Day. Will probably strip down the 'Conda and sell the ole girl and buy a Python and play with it.

Anaconda is perfect for exploration. Best range loads of internals and properly engineered she can move for a big girl too.
Yeah Asp has a good cockpit but so do other ships.

Im currently building an explora T9 in colonia...funding needed to transfer an 8b fuel scoop from the bubble so farming neutrons fer a few days. Honestly, Im not gonna get into recommended setups as none of my setups are tried and tested...this literally is the first time Ive tried an exploration setup so if this thread takes off, its one the few I shall follow with interest.

As it stands, Im sold on the cockpit view...nothing Ive flown even comes close. Theres also the ability to pack in a larger 3d printer fer SLF...I tend to crash lots when hitting corners in canyons less than 2 meters from terra firma, so I need a big hangar if going out fer a long time.

And while I dont do multipew, the bridge of the T9 and that cockpit view...well maybe in the future...providing frontier show us some luvin at their expo :p

Have parts from the bubble shipped to colonia so this little expedition of mine has a good head start considering Im using a non engineered build...sub 20ly range. I reason it out like it feeling the same as bubble to jacques in a non engineered dbx as going from jaques to Sag a in a non engineered T9...itll take more or less the same time and number of jumps...just with slightly better eye candy than faffing around in the suburbs.

I thought about doing this once because as you say the cockpit view is superb. However flying the Anaconda in supercruise was driving me mad on my last long trip out and comparing the Anaconda's supercruise performance to the T-9 is like comparing a Lotus Elan to a 1965 Bedford truck. With no wheels.

As a result I'm currently heading for the Hawking's Gap area in a black Orca that jumps 47LY, rocks a pair of SRVs and boosts well over 400 for speedy ground coverage. Best choice I've made in ages.

My T-9 is parked at Founders and although I said I'd never do it (I even have black Friday paint for it...) I'm considering selling it when I get back because after buying a Cutter there is literally no point in owning the ship.

Also Verm, I meant to say - class 8 fuel scoop :D

So I returned to the bubble sold all my data and made Elite! Hurrah! Wasn't expecting that for a long time. Anyways, at founders and went for a Anaconda for my next big ship exploration. I know I can do a T9 for similar dosh and the view is immense but I'd have to go to those dirty engineers which I have neither the time nor the will to do.

Maybe when I get a VR set, i'll sell my soul and do so.

Why does the interior look like 1990's Ford Sierra? :S

I started a second account mainly to have a multicrew for the first account when handling HazRes alone, the extra pip would be nice. But due to my abysmal internet connection, that was a flop, what with the dropped connections and what not, and the long process to get the multicrew session going again, I decided to just have my Noob account go out and handle the long exploration trips and leave the first account with all the rank and assets in the bubble to handle faction stuff. So my new exploration account has now logged a bit more than 2 weeks game time and has gone over 24k Lys, with over 10k level 3 scans. 'She' has become Elite in exploration with over 10k first discoveries so far, so along with the first account I have logged over 45k total first discoveries so far, and am still counting up the ones from the last trip. But the Noob account has no rank with any faction, nor are all the engineers unlocked, but I spent a couple days trying to unlock a few of the important ones and managed to get my Anaconda (recently purchased from proceeds of my exploration run....went from 32 mil bank account to 400 mil in a 20k ly exploration journey) up to a 60 ly jump range, which is not the best the ship can do, but it has all I need, decided to leave the fighter hanger behind to get the jump range up. It sure is nice to be able to be able to transverse the Verse in huge chunks like that. I know, I know, it handles like a slug in supercruise and all that, and when I have to do the loop of shame, it seems to take forever compared to other ships like the DBX, ASPX or Orca, even the Beluga turns faster in SC than the Conda, but when you think about it, I ain't in much of a hurry anyhow, and the view is decent enough, if I want a better view, I just use the external camera.

Turn that 9 upside down and get the best exploration ship of them all...the Type-6!

Flying happily

Exploration be like:

Anaconda, AspX, DBX: best choices
DBS, Adder, Hauler: budget choices
Anything else: novelty choice
Having done a most enjoyable 104k trip in an Orca with a 46.5 range and with an SRV on board I beg to differ. In fact the whole concept of "novelty choices" is a bit silly. People fly what they like. Cos it's not all about the range.

Let's see. Things to consider:
- for edge distance records: jump range above all else
- for travelling: jump range, supercruise turning, highest fuel scoop class (relative to fuel tank)
- for planetary exploration: forward speed (and general agility), visibility from cockpit
- subjective, but important for long expeditions: cockpit looks, ship looks
- versatility: number of internal slots
- defences are not important (yet?), but still worth considering: base shield strength and base armour, as well as forward speed (best defence is to not get hit in the first place)
- nice to have in a social aspect: multicrew seats, hangar bay

It's a novelty choice if it's not firstly about best range and secondly about ability to hold a full set of exploration modules (ADS, DSS, SRV, AFMU). You can love it all you want, but anything in 'novelty' class is out-performed on a metrics basis by the other ships. Hence, 'novelty'.
