Consumer Report: DON'T BUY AN EAGLE!

So i got my first few solid hours of play in today, liking the mechanics so far, though the fitting and inventory menu is kind of lacking in proper functionality (but i'm going to assume that will be added in later).\

Combat feels a lot better than it did in the 1.0 single player build, a few good tweaks in the right direction, the space stations are nice, the game is running better, all round improvement compared to the early build.

A bit disappointed in the pay disparity between traders and mercenaries (1 item courier mission, completion time: 5 minutes, 1-3 jumps. pay: 3000-7000 credits) vs (put your life on the line, spend 30 minutes to an hour hunting down pirates, most of which wont count for the mission (assuming bug) after making 5+ jumps to get to the far off mission locations, and get paid at most 500 credits, (maybe 3000 if you can afford the expensive and slot consuming bounty scanner) and the merc missions that pay on par with the courier missions don't even tell you where or what your target is, so i will go ahead and say those ones take multiple hours to complete, so all in all doing anything that is not trading apparently is not worth your time.

NOW ABOUT THE EAGLE

Ive been wanting one of these since i backed a while ago, not my final cup of tea, but a sleek vessel focused around combat that would make a wonderful start to a budding mercenary career. After buying it, and fitting it with pulse lasers, i decided to take on another of those courer missions, since my bank acount was hovering around 400 credits (300 after i accidentally violated a no fire zone) and the courier missions are easy and pay well. That is when i learned that the eagle has the most worthless frameshift drive in the universe, thus leaving me stranded on a metaphorical island consisting of 4 star systems, none of which happen to be my delivery destination.

so uh...anyone around I Bootis want to buy some semi-stolen goods?

Eagle troubles aside (funny, by the way!), I wholeheartedly agree with this.

Now, FD has said before, waaaay back in one of their dev diary videos, that the intent is to make all professional as equal as possible. So far this has not been the case.

For the longest time it's been combat trumping trade. You could make crazy cash in prior builds by just farming out NPCs at conflict zones or resource extraction sites.

Now we have the opposite situation where trading is super strong and bounty hunting is way sub-par. (and piracy is so worthless as to not even be worth a mention).

I think the mission generators are the start of interesting story-lines and events. They will be just as worth your while as trading unless your only focus is "levelling up" to the "best" ship. The entire game is not just about accumulating credits, although as in real life they are needed.

Nice story about the Eagle for other commanders to learn from. But I don't think it needs a recall! Chalk it up as a lesson learned, poor commander planning and not knowing your ship will get you stranded and/or killed.

Did you try the reserves? I haven't tried them yet so not sure if that mechanic is working, will have to get myself in a situation to try them out tonight.

I'd say we need that kind of information up front and center when we visit the shipyard. Would anyone buy a vehicle blind? You'd want to see all the stats first.... MPG/cargo capacity/etc.

Something for FD to add as they can I suppose.

Point taken and agreed, ship stats right along with decent tutorials. I'm sure they are on the list somewhere, but not priority at the moment.

That's disappointing, I was looking forward to picking up an eagle since it's apparent Standard Beta Price drop.

Frameshift really that bad, how much cargo were you hauling? How does it compare with the Sidey for resilience and power production?

Tried it a few times now, and I've started looking at the Eagle in the same light as a Triumph Stag.

It's small, the cockpit is cramped, it's not particularly quick, can't carry much cargo, it has very little range and it overheats a lot! :D

Joking aside, some ship/module stats before purchase are a definite necessity and I'm sure are in the works. Would be very surprised with FD if it's not.

Ship stats before purchase are indeed neccessary, but i would hope that a standard issue frameshift drive would be capable of reaching any (commonly visited) star system, even if you might eventually need to take a huge roundabout route to get there.

As for the performance of the eagle, i cant say, when i discovered my banishment to I Bootis island i decided to take a break and go play some warframe :p. From my experience violating a no fire zone, it just seems like a sidewinder that turns quicker, has an extra gun, and crapierr FTL capability.

If you do get stranded activate your distress beacon and you'll be offered fuel al though it's a highly inflated price.

That isn't what i mean by stranded.

The jump drive is physically incapable of leaving these four star systems, all the others are too far away for it.

The Eagle is an excellent combat ship if you plan on working on the conflict zones in various systems. Yes, it has no legs on it's frameshift, so it is very limited it where it can go. However, with the ability to now sell your ship for the same cost as you purchased, you can now buy a sidewinder, travel to where you want to go, then trade that in again and yourself an Eagle for that system for combat.

Combat has never been more profitable than trading since the start of the Premium Beta, however in my opinion it is still much more fun. Here is a twitch highlight from last night of some fun you can have in an Eagle when you take it out to a conflict zone.

Alright, cmdr Hazed...I look forward to blasting you to dust in Eranin 2.
Long live the communist independent state of Eranin!
KILL THE FASCIST FEDS!!!

LOL! :D

Agreed, luckily I had enough for a hauler so I traded out of the eagle. I would hope a lot of the fuel consumption/limits get tweaked as we progress thru Beta.

I'm not sure about this, but I think some of the upgraded weapons are heavy enough to affect jump range - you might try selling off your pulse lasers to see if you can then jump out of the 'island'

The eagle made me chuckle all the same.

Scraped together some money and bought an Eagle ... took it out for a spin .. suffice to say I chose to self destruct.

(KB/Mouse is terrible for combat .. that's all I am going to say :D)

Same for the Viper!

I bought one when they were about 35,000CR. Now I can;t visit any of the rich systems as they are about .2LY too far!

Can anyone confirm selling guns let's you go further? I have 4 and have thought maybe that's stopping me. But I like the set up too much to sell.
