oculus extremely lagging

so I bought the rift but things run far from smooth.
first, specs:
motherboard: Gigabyte z170 intel chipset, DDR3
processor: i7-6700 3.4ghz, with 8gb ram
gigabyte gtx 970.

when I run at ultra vr I get 45hz frame rate and horrible, negative performance headroom. and it gets stuck a lot/
when I switch to high i get 70sh and around zero average headroom. in med and low i get 90 but headroom performance is still bad and while it still runs it's far from smooth.

all the setting searches I did, showed stuff from 2016 at best, so I couldn't find anything useful (it took me a few runs to find the debugging tool which google says it's still in the sdk tools).

any suggestions? I think I need an ssd HD, but I don't think that's the problem.

all the tests were on solo mode withh 100mbps in line to the pc...

With a 970 you're at minimum spec for elite in VR. Run it on "vr low", then maybe increase some if it runs well.

As above, I also run a GTX970 and VR low is about all I can manage too.
This is to be expected, VR is a huge strain on your system.

but even in vr low its shuddering and lagging. any other tweaks I can do?

I must mention that in other oculus games it's pretty smooth (although I guess they are not as straining as ED)

You’re at 3.4 ghz? Are you able to overclock with your setup? Elite is a cpu hog from what I’ve experienced

Runs pretty good here and my 4670K at 4.0 should be slower than his cpu at stock, unless he's running that memory in singlechannel or something.

Is the windows powerplan at "high performance"?
Is the nvidia control panel powermanagement on "prefer max peformance?
Are all overlays turned off?
Is the xbox dvr turned off?
Is shadowplay turned off?

Ive played elite on a I5 4690k@ 4.5Ghz, 8Gb of ram and a gtx 970 for two years, one year on a dk2 and one year on a vive.

I turned down most things, except for textures, a bit so i could do a bit of supersampling to increase text legibility.

Got a gtx 1080 last week tho :)

so what and how do I need to turn on and off?
cpu is on high performance.
nvidia power management changed to performance
shadowplay is off
no overlays or xbox.
headroom oerformance still under 0 most of the time and still have lagging, better than what it was but still...
loading the game through the oculus app

Start by dropping pretty much everyting as low as it will go and see if you get the game to run well, then step up the settings one by one in order of importance to you, testing as you go.

A good tip i read on here was to be sitting in a space station, hit ctrl-f to show frame rate in the desktop mirror window and try to have it hit a constant 45 and it will run well pretty much everywhere.

Ill put the 970 i removed from my main comp into my secondary comp and see if i can get the framerate to 45 after work tonight.

The CPU on this secondary comp is a bit slower tho, its got an i3 6100 but ill share the results anyway.

I've got an i7-4770 @ 3.4 GHz with 16 GB ram and a GTX 980Ti. I run either at 4K (2D) or 1080p (3D with NVidia LCD shutter glasses). In general, my framerates are pretty good in Ultra (90+ fps) except near stations (40-80 fps). I think you probably need to run with lower graphic settings. A better video card would certainly help.

I agree. I don't think getting an SSD will help anything but loading times.

Are you playing in Solo or Open? Network delays seem to cause some of the trouble near stations, so you might try Solo, to see if that helps.

how about sweetfx? oculus debugging tool? changing HDMI to DP?

Are you running windows 10? Have an antivirus you could turn off for testing?

What scores do you get if you run cinebench/3dmark and other cpu/gpu benchmarks?

There is a vr benchmark on steam which with the 970 my comp got just in the green on the scale.

You can also try the firestrike benchmark, back before vr had been released to the general public the official word was that a score of OVER 9000 meant your comp would do VR alright, my comp with the 970 got just over 9000 on the it.

Those can indicate if your comp performs as expected or there is something off outside of the game settings.

Would suggest you install Dr Kaii's profile tool if you haven't already. Link.

Make sure you aren't doing any super sampling in Oculus/Steam/ED to start with, then dial in and experiment once you have a useable baseline.

As others have said, your GPU is pretty much at the minimum requirements for ED in VR, so don't expect to be able to whack everything up to 11 :)

You are right at the bottom end of the system specs. 8gb ram may need to be upped to 16gb (this is what I did). Think about overclocking you processor. I have an aging 2500k, but have it overclocked to 4.2ghz.
The 970gtx is litereally the bottom rung of GPU's that can handle ED in VR. Maybe sell and get a more powerfull GPU. You also didn't mention the speed of your ram, that could play a part too.

Do not use the game through SteamVR, quit steam before starting up the game so steam VR doesn't run. Run it through the standalone ED Launcher if you are not already.

Yeah, I bought a 1080 with my Rift because I didn't want to deal with minimum specs with my 970.

Just curious though, where are you seeing these low frame rates? If you are just sitting in a hangar, or in the station, the frame rates will be horrible. I think a 970 should do OK out in space, but maybe not so great in a RES, and poorly again on a planet. Also, 8GB sounds a little low - I think people have said 16GB helps with VR performance.
