Green Lights, some people need to be told...

Dude NPCs just charge through the damn letterbox bang in the middle rotating out of control.

Protocols lol. Its a free for all every where ive been..

OK I stand corrected on this, boats are meant to pass each other on the right, however as I consider currently consider myself White Van Man in my hauler I tend to ignore smaller vehicles and beware of the big ones...

You know, the green lights that signal which side of the station entrance/exit to use...

Well maybe the nice lady station announcer might mention it. Just sayin...

I'd say the fact that she doesn't mention it is a pretty good indication that sticking to the green is not necessarily how FD believe it should be done. Just sayin...

This thread is a little like the European Union trying to decide on committee what flavour sandwiches they will eat at lunch.

OT: Earthbound naval standards (which aren't standards across he world) be damned, I treat green and red as traffic guidance.

If it helps me avoid one crash, it's worth it.

Uh oh! looks like us American and European players operate under different standards:

Let the chaos commence !!!!

Americans do everything backwards compared to the UK. When I first came here it was funny because water faucets are on the opposite side and turn the opposite way. Light switches, in fact all switches are back to front. Toggle down to turn off in the USA. Then you have more obvious driving ones.

I suppose that generally when pilots of aircraft are wondering which side to pass each other on, then something has already gone horribly wrong.

I used to support the idea of entry/exit lanes and I still think that if they were enforcable they'd be a great idea but the reality is that they're not enforcable, not even hinted at in-game, and the exterior lights seem to have disappeared altogether. The debate has been going since the Alphas... I think if it was FD's intent that these lights were intended as more than just decorative they would have a: made it more obvious (eg: in station announcements) and b: would have said something about it in the forums. The lack of any evidence to the contrary I now believe they're just navigational channel markers, not stop/go lights.

So now I turn on my ship's lights so I'm more visible, check my scanner, and get out of Dodge as quick as possible. Considering all the npc's suddenly ramming the walls on either side of the slot or floating around dead in the station (I saw an intact lakon type 6 bouncing around dead in Azeban the other day!), not to mention all the newbie players who just charge through the middle without looking coz they havent realised yet that others may be around the slot at the same time, the slot of the average station has become more dangerous than the approach to freeport!

Caveat emptor station users.

I know its probably a bizarre idea but perhaps the station designers should have considered a separate entrance and exit for stations, though I dont want to be too controversial here (having played the original game..)

Actually I quite enjoy the mayhem :)

I have noticed that the NPCs tend to do one of a few things: Not care and use either side; some sit outside ... in the dark .. scaring the pants out of people; but most of all then fly erratically inside the station and stress me out!

Love it :D

People can argue all day which Naval system is right but in traffic terms red is stop and green is go so I'll stick to the green side except to dodge oncoming or unpredictable pilots, until FD tell me that is wrong.

NPCs go right down the middle (really slowly), then stop and flip on their side just inside the entrance, then kind of float sideways to their landing pad. If not, explode inside the entrance and spew debris everywhere. I've also seen a few get blown up by the station guns for whatever reason :p

Lights? We don't need no stinking lights!

I just turbo through the slot as soon as I get docking clearance. Not my fault if space traffic control didn't wave off the other traffic.

There's no up/down/left/right/port/starboard when you're heading into a rotating object and plan to move in any of 360 degrees of directions once you're inside.

What there is is a slot with a green side and a red side. These colours (colors to our American cousins) are reversed when looking out from within. If everyone always keeps to the green side, then rude AI, arrogant DCs, and jumbos aside, we're more likely to have less crashes.

Hot going full speed or boosting helps too.

Quite frankly Ive never even been close to hitting another PC.

Now NPC.....hell I have about 20 minutes of crazy docking port footage I could edit into a video, that shows how much that brown stuff has hit the fan with those guys...

I blame the DC...

Don't apply basic logic to this argument! Its been going since light became a thing, and its still going strong.

On the positive I learn something new about some Naval practice from [Insert Random Country Here]'s Navy so I guess there's something interesting to be found.

Whatever the original intention of these lights I thought it was generally agreed by the community to use them for traffic management.
Did I miss a meeting?

Behaviour of NPCs and DC i put down to AI that needs fine tuning.
When you switch on the DC you're essentially making your craft a NPC anyway.

I have to admit that I just blast straight in and out as fast as I can and try to miss any oncoming traffic :D:D

I can't say I have actually noticed any red or green lights either ...
