This is by the way really a fun game. Lacks a ton of stuff ED has bit it has its own pros, and for a one-man game looks surprisingly good.
...that let you play the way you want to play and be who you want to be and have true sandbox elements to make it a real space game and not a Pinocchio.
That has roles/jobs/etc manifesting from emergent game play instead of shoe-horned in by the dev's designers.
That lets you build your ship using concrete specific things instead of randomness to get some silly augments.
That encompasses a true physics engine and make you have to think about your next move instead of being coddled by code.
That has space whales, reavers, life on planets, and the ability to get out of your gal durned seat!
If only there was such a game...
I'd buy it!

Well it doesn't per se lack it, it's just rough around the edges. But the freeform nature that OP looks for is there, along with proper offline/online modes and a lot of freedom.
Yeah, Evochron is a much better game than ED altogether. Very immersive, but obviously not as pretty. But if game-play is what your after (aren't we all), then Evochron is a very good shout.
Hater! Hater!![]()
I like ED, if a shooter in space is what your after, then you shouldn't look further than ED. But unfortunately, its not what many players want. Although, when Infinity comes out, that will be a better shooter in space (possibly). I backed both, but wish ED would have been more. But dinosaurs destroy everything, ED included (probably)..
