At root, the problem, at least as I see it, is that the crowd-funding was too successful too quickly. The huge amounts of cash gushing into the project opened up huge new vistas of potential development, and CR, with his "visionary" vision, just couldn't resist chucking as many concepts into the mixer as he could think them up.
There must be times in the wee small hours when he wakes up and thinks "How in hell am I ever going to make good on all the stuff I said would be in the game?". And then another sackload of cash falls out of the money tree and he just thinks "Sod it".
Problem is it didn't open really anything. Software development is really, really complex and anyone ready to map 150M against certain gameplay features are just lying trough their teeth. They should have suck with their base plans and build from there. Good planning and management would certainly land SC in good place.
