The life of a grammatical pedant

I recommend reading Middle and/or Old English - it's a sure-fire cure to all grammatical and spelling pedantry. Half of that stuff's just random nonsense made up by eejits who were trying to pretend that English is like Latin.

Couple of examples:

to vs too - too (in the sense of too much) used to be spelled to

the dreaded alot - people get upset about alot, but don't even notice alone ("all one", i.e. by one's self)

English is first and foremost a language thought and spoken. And it's free for us all to innovate as we like, so have fun with it! It's already an unholy hybrid of Germanic and Romance with bits and pieces from all over the world shoved in the mix and written using an alphabet which doesn't really have the right sounds, it's not like we can make it worse...

Also and tangentially: Nostalgia for Infinity is a brilliant name. I'm on reading Revenger at the moment...

I honestly don't understand why we can't change ship name / ID while in space. Why does this have to be done at a station?

You could in theory rename your ship electronically, of course, but pan-galactic identity theft laws prevent you from flying a spaceship with a name painted on it that's different from your electronically registered ship name. So you'd have to do an EVA out onto your ship's hull with a couple of cans of space paint. Since you don't have an EVA suit, or space paint, you have to wait until you get to an outfitting dock, where the nanobot-swarm spraypainters can rename your ship for you in seconds.

I always double double check my ship name spellings when launching a new ship....all 7 are named after Pink Floyd tracks....It's amazing how many appropriate track titles there are... I did once foul up with.... "Astronomy Domine"

Astronomical Dominoes doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I am in a quandary.
3,000 Ly from the bubble and last night whilst looking at a pretty gas giant I realised I had spelt my ship name wrong.

This sort of thing really bugs me. So do I go back to the nearest station and correct the error, or do I stick some gaffer tape over so I cant see it and continue my journey.

At least my journal can begin with "The expedition of the misspelt ship".

OCD is strong in this one

I could care less.

I am glad people are addressing the core and most important aspects of the game :p

Just taking a leaf out of FD's book :)

I'm still sore that I can't name one of my ships "Anticipation Of A New Griefer's Arrival, The".

In your case I'd just carry on, and treat the "Dissonant Congnitive" as a quirky in-joke. :)

Bonus: My Anaconda is called "Mystery Wrapped Enigma", because again, not enough characters to have "A Mystery Wrapped Around An Enigma" - we need more character allocation for ship names, Frontier :p

You're clearly not one, then.

Even as a joke, that would have been too painful to write for a True Pedant (of the Grammar or Spelling variety).

Muphry* wins again...

* look it up, if you think that's a typo!!

I know right.

Honestly I was thinking of naming next ship, wait for it;

Possessive'

He he!

More characters for ship names = more Culture references :D

(Though I can't see them letting us have enough letters for the Mistake Not...'s full name)

The funny thing is, one of my ship names was not unique (literally), but crew members told me that that was censored. No idea why it would be.
