Exploration Ship Recommendations? What's Your Favorite?

I've settled on the Clipper for now.

It has a great view from the cockpit. Love the way it handles.

It's not engineered and has only a 25 ly jump range, but that's okay as I'm not in a hurry. I'm just sight seeing for most of it.

I did slap and extra fuel tank on it though. 16t was not good enough for me. It would be like me to not be paying attention and end up low on fuel among a group of brown dwarfs.

Funnily enough, prompted by this thread I threw together an explorer build for my clipper on coriolis yesterday prompted by this thread. Like you, an extra tank would be a must for me, particularly for being able to keep a fairly straight route through areas where the stars are thin and bridge across them rather than having to plot more circuitous routes.

The one I put together had a jump range of about 24.5 (no doubt a very similar build to yours) which would actually be about 36 with the engineered FSD I have on my Clipper and more than that after applying a few lightweight mods to some other gear like the sensors and life support. I might build that and take it out for a short trip, see how I get on with it because my clipper is just gathering dust. It's a lovely ship to fly but every single time I think about using it for something I just think 'I can do this more efficiently in a Python' and back into the hangar it goes.

For me, the AspX is still the original and the best. Others can make longer jumps, others have more fittings options, but the Asp is a great all rounder. Mine does 50Ly with shields and six small weapons, full set of scanners, and repair systems.

Its going to come down to some personal taste. I tried the DBX & Conda but didn't find them very enjoyable as explorers. I kept going back to my Asp. Does everything I need, good view from the cockpit. Haven't considered the Orca myself.

Extreme jump range still goes to Conda, so if you really want to get as deep/far out as possible that would be the choice, but with FSD boosts & some decent engineer rolls you can get pretty far with the Asp.

+ rep for honesty!

Anaconda, then DBX, then AspX. I like squirreling myself into far off hard to reach areas on the map and the range on the conda boosted with either a little tail or some jumponium is my go to.

whats the furthest a ship has jumped with no fuel scoop
i.e. kitted out with lots of fuel tanks,
how far can you go?
Have no clue, but I would recommend a T7 for that experiment. It does 160LY on its standard fuel tank. It's the only ship I've never considered putting a fuel scoop on [where is it]

on Coriolis an anaconda with all fuel tanks can jump 31 ly for 2583 ly
I wonder if on could reach colonia using neutrons and jumponium and stopping at the highway ports for refuelling.
That would be a first!
Better even in an asp or DBX
anyone going to try

This build looks like a strong contender (for unengineered) at 1747Ly

Of course it's absolutely useless for anything other than getting far without scooping.

Edit:
on Coriolis an anaconda with all fuel tanks can jump 31 ly for 2583 ly

With god rolled engineering I presume?

Someone has jumped to Sag A* from the bubble without refuelling using economy jumps, from memory it was in an all-tanks Anaconda. There's a forum thread about it somewhere.

Depends on what I'm doing:

1. The Dolphin: https://beta.coriolis.edcd.io/outfi...==.Aw1/kA==..EweloBhBGA2GAsICmBDA5gG2SGF9A===

For pretty much any range.

2. The Orca: https://beta.coriolis.edcd.io/outfi...w18gjM0kA==..EweloBhBmcBYQFMCGBzANokICMF9A===

Again, for pretty much any range, but when I want to fly something bigger.

3. The Beluga: https://beta.coriolis.edcd.io/outfi...//8MAMd3/dcdAAAA.EweloBhBGYA4agKYEMDmAbJIYT0A

When setting off with the potential to be out there for months+ and the need to remain self-sufficient is important.

And finally, when I don't plan on returning from the Void - The Cutter: https://beta.coriolis.edcd.io/outfi...ALtbMmAdAAAA.EweloBhA2AWF4FMCGBzANokICMF9A===

See, this is why I recently suggested FDev should try and come up with a reason for us to station ships at multiple locations throughout the bubble.

Perhaps they could make it so that becoming allied to a faction gives you some kind of a "trade licence" to fly that ship in their jurisdiction or something?
Whatever.

Point is, we all like to fly different ships and it'd be nice if there was something to encourage us to have multiple ships filling similar roles in different places.
If you wanted to, you could buy half a dozen Pythons, half a dozen vultures and half a dozen Anacondas and create several identical "fleets" but, for the rest of us, it'd give us something to do with most of the ships we already own.

Currently my Python is parked-up in LHS, as part of my "Alliance Fleet", while my Clipper is doing a similar job out in Merope.

Would love to see your Cutter setup, but I cannot get any of the links to work?

(actually, I cannot get any of the links to work)

I'm not a hardcore explorer but I did the 5k ly trip for Palin. At the time I was using a DBX and it coped well, but I hit some stars and got bad hull damage, so now I have an AspX for when I next head off. It can carry a bigger scoop plus has an extra slot for the hull repair limpets.
