Pimax 8K VR headset kickstarter ends...

Just watched this review from Amsterdam

enjoy!!

CV1 rift user here; I am most impressed by the 200 fov because the rift/vive have that
binocular view I find irritating.
Although I am very happy with my rift (and play ED only in VR) I am a backer for the 8K
just because of the better specs ( next gen ? ). It will burn a second hole in my pocket  .

The thing I not fully understand is the stretch goals; do you get them as a backer for free or
do you have to pay for them when released :S.

I own Pimax 4k and it comes with nice build in headphones. didn't see any on the new pimax in the video. will the retail variant have an option for them?

The kickstarter and retail versions are stated as being the same, see update #11 on KS.
The headphones seem to be an attachment on the 8k and are included in the KS as a stretch goal

For the retail version, I guess it would be an additional purchase, on top of the price that will be higher (at least in the initial months) than the KS price.

I also have the 4k headset with those sweet cans!! .. If you jump on the kickstarter, you'll get another set, along with a better headstrap for free, otherwise I am fairly confident that you could use the ones on your 4k with the 8k if the 8k also features the same audio jack system as the 4k -- btw, the 8k also is supposed to have a built in microphone as well

What is the lense in this set? Cause Im not buying anything with fresnel lenses for elite, If I upgrade I want the "godray" effect gone....

I think the review is probably the first truly objective review of where Pimax are at whereas many of the others were a bit over-enthusiastic!

Main issues seem to be:

Display a little dim
75Hz refresh rate
Not a significantly higher pixel density (due to the increased FOV) over the Oculus etc.
Questions over whether any sensibly priced rig could run the card at significantly higher resolutions.
With so many issues still outstanding in late Oct I'm not at all convinced (based upon many years in IT development) that they're going to be able to ship anything before May/June next year.
In fairness to them I think they are trying to build the headset everybody wants but they're banging up against the bleeding edge of technology.

I have to say I bought the Oculus Rift from Amazon just to try it with half an eye on sending it back within 30 days in favour of the Samsung Odyssey VR or maybe one of the Pimax devices. Samsung decided not to launch the Odyssey VR in Europe and Pimax seem to be in development hell and I honestly can't see anything being shipped for at least 6 months. That just leaves something like the Dell Visor. That has no guaranteed Steam integration and is probably only a minor upgrade over a Rift in terms of visual clarity.

I fired up Elite in the Rift for the first time in a few days last night and I'm still blown away by it even if the bloody cables everywhere for the sensors are a pain in the !

At this rate I think I'm going to end up keeping the Rift - it does the job, in Elite very well and there are no uncertainties with it. I'm starting to understand why Oculus haven't built a gen 2 product yet but my bet is when they do it's going to be amazing and it will just work from day 1.

Dont forget that when the Pimax gets released we are gonna have at least one new better and faster generation of graphic cards, probably two.... But nevertheless I will be patient and stay with oculus waiting for something better. But i prettym much like the way it goes with the pimax

WOW! so a £380 ($500) headset and a new £600/£700 card to run it to it's full....... This VR malarky is gonna be costly :(

Am i alone in thinking that review has caught Pimax with their pants down a little, and is not as good as some people have been saying on this forum??

or am i reading it wrong??

I guess it's subjective.. The main point of contention seems to be that 75hz refresh rate .. I personally did not find that to be an issue, and given that my Pi 4kB caps out at 66Hz and I have no problems playing Elite with it (over 100 hours logged in VR now)

I suppose that for some, they need 90Hz at least to overcome motion sickness, so I can dig the concern.

Hopefully I can get another demo in the next few weeks to make a comparison between the v2 and v3, because I was genuinely impressed with the 8k unit over my 4k

Heck we need the Volta just for current gen HMD's.
Let alone next gen.

No a 1080ti is still not enough.

Really?? i say that as a question rather than a comment. I am pushing my rift to almost it's max, and i think the lack of definition is now down to the rift limitations rather than my rig?

However i am not the expert on this topic, i just see what i see!

90hz isn't for motion sickness but it does help, if you have that issue.
There is a huge step however in the "VR-MAGIC" feeling going from 75 to 90hz.
It's the difference between "yea this is pretty good" to "wholy sh***t this is amazing".

It's hard to tell the difference at times, but I loose that sense og magic and it presto, my fps is dropped.
And yes ASW does this too, hence why I'm aiming for 90fps as much as possible and ditching all forms of SS.

To me it is, I can run rather high settings, but as soon as I engage SS it starts to fall apart a lot.
But this could be my older cpu\rig that is throttling, there is far more to VR than just GPU capabilities.

I am quite happy with the rift and or the vive atm, only real thing I'm looking for is the increased FOV without dropping FPS and to much fidelity.

I am one of those guys who disabled SPUD in the rift settings so I no longer have the black overdrive issue, so my rift goes to true black.
9 times out of 10, when someone say it's not bright enough, what they really mean is the black levels are too high and contrasts suffer, increasing light output just aggravates the problem.

Anyhoo, I am still twitching over this, I wish is to be good, but I kind NEED them to keep to the 90hz goal for it to be worth even considering dropping rift OLED.

Then again, the rift OLED's are Pentile (the guy who came up with that deserves his own personal level in hell for that) And most likely v2 ok.

Im guessing you guys have high powered pcs because for what ive read about the pimax 8k is that a gtx 1080 ti is the minimum ,in fact pimax stated 2 gtx 1080 ti are needed in SLI mode for full efffect??????
ouch.......thats if it actually does support SLI when it comes out

I have seen another review on the Road to VR website that also points out several short coming during their hands on time with the Pimax 8k prototype. I think that some on this forum probably are being a little over-enthusiastic on the 8k because everyone really wants a next gen headset. I know I do but I'm not willing to back it on kick starter. I'll wait until the production units have some time in the wild first. I have concerns about the refresh rate and brightness myself. Also the fact that they use LCD instead of OLED. LCD has never been good at displaying dark scenes and they can't do true blacks. Since my primary VR game is Elite which is very dark with a lot of black in space, i'm not sure about LCD. I'm hoping the Pimax delivers but I don't think it will live up to the hype. It should at least push other headset makers to deliver on their next gen headsets.
