Imagine Elite Dangerous on this :)

My apologies, I was thinking of the 4K which does not have pos tracking. 8K does look interesting. Looking forward to your review. :)

Yes can't wait till more reviews for the 8k pimax comes out, it will certainly put pressure on Oculus and Vive to step up their game.

As for AR while it interesting and certainly has it uses it's a long long long way off before anything reasonable can be done with it, it has quite a few problems itself to overcome not to mention a hefty price tag...what only 3000$ for the hololens...

Well, to be fair, when you make something like that on demand, it's a very different proposition to mass manufacturing 100,000 per batch, and I'm not suggesting AR as good as VR is today (comparatively) is coming in the next few years, more like ten, I would guess.

Could be MS has kind of put the hololens tech for consumers on the back burner for now and have shifted to making knock off Oculus/Vive headsets available for cheaper I think, even the controllers look like knock offs.

Don't need AR to do VR... Although it would be nice to toggle an "outside view" on and off to see my keyboard when occasionally necessary - thats not really AR. It doesn't require any integration with the VR environment in any way - just an external head mounted camera... The new "MR" headsets that are being sold via MicroSoft (inc the Samsung Odyssey) simply flip up to accommodate this... VR, AR, MR... VR is all that matters (to me anyway). In fact, Microsoft's "MR" is not AR in any way (no vidcams) - just rebranded VR...

I've been running the Rift since last December and ED is IMHO by far the best VR experience to be found. The Rift gets it done just fine but I am looking forward to advances in VR tech. Besides the PiMax 8K hopefully arriving in early Jan, I also have a Samsung Odyssey which should be shipping on Nov 6. Slightly better resolution than the Rift - curious how it will compare... Yeah: #VRJUNKY

Not that it matters much to anyone but me: I also don't give a crap about wireless "enhancements" to the VR Tech or "room scale" . Video games are meant to be played in a comfy chair - not dancing around your living room. Remember the Nintendo Wii? Nice party trick, but no-one really wants to play room scale video games for very long... And who cares about "wireless" if you're sitting in a chair?

since ED is a seated experience, I can't understand why a wireless headset or the absence of a good PC, would improve the experience.
I think this would be much better:

It is primarily a seated experience, although it's great to walk around the Bridges of these ships, or just stand there soaking up the environment. Last week a mate of mine came up from London, was absolutely blown away walking around the T9, his first time experiencing VR. It never gets old seeing peoples reaction.

Agreed - but I just spin my chair around...

Someone needs to code an interface so that Elite works with a G-Loc cabinet.

Right now Im running Elite on Oculus Rift with VR HIGH settings, and I only have a Gigabyte AMD R9 380x w/4GB (which Oculus say is below the minimum specs), I have a good frame rate and no glitches, smooth head movement, no lag, perfect view.

My PC: ASUS B150 PRO GAMING/AURA, CPU i5 7400, 16GB RAM and AMD R9 380x 4GB, no SSD

I already tested the VR games, LONE ECHO, BLADE RUNNER 2049 and DCS WORLD, all run perfect with Oculus and my rig. The only lag is in DCS world when you get in the cockpit and is loading all the ground textures and objects, after that, perfect!

Look into the 1080Ti. If you're going to get a decent card, then get the best. It's only one step up. [big grin]

Holy money sink, Batman!
One sweet card.
And only $1224 at Tiger Direct.

Well, if I ever upgrade/rebuild mine, that's going to be on my shopping list.

Great excuse for building a man-cave and never leaving the house ever again.

I'm in the process of saving for a CV1, I might just hang on a little longer to see where this goes, the eye tracking and field of view are impressive, perhaps won't have to move head around so much.

The whole point of VR ***IS*** moving your head around to scan your environment. Eye tracking is not intended for this. Eye tracking is for cursor placement and control selection - not to replace head movement...

Let me put it this way: in order to run decently in VR on an Oculus Rift, ED requires a GTX 1080 which needs around 180 Watts of electrical power.

no it doesnt, i have rift cv1, i have strix 980 ti, and my processor is ancient i7 3800 or something, 16 gig of memory. and i have most of ed settings to full except shadows which is high instead of ultra, and i have SS to 1.75 and its totally smooth. you dont need 1080 though it would be nicer.

rift uses something called spacewarp, before that, i had to dial settings down a bit to get it smooth, but with it, i have most stuff on max.
