Happy flying!

the agricultural revolution made us work more, have less fun, be less free, live in unhealthy overpopulated settlements ... but allowed us to breed like rabbits.

somehow we thought it was a good deal.

High population requires terraformed worlds (or natural ELWs) - presumably because with a breathable atmosphere and survivable weather, the unit cost of housing goes way down, and people actually want to live there. ELWs also usually cause agricultural economies.

I think you answered your question

In all seriousness, everyone wants food so it makes sense the food producers have all the hands

Most of the high pops are actually agricultural/industrial though, with the stations having distinct economies instead of mixed as well. It just doesn't show up in galaxy map properly.

So it's more like districts extended to space.

It makes perfect sense when you think about it. When you have a party, everyone tends to congregate around the kitchen where the food is.. Most of the population of the Elite universe live on Earth like worlds, and that's where the food is grown too..

Maybe you are asking the wrong question.

It should be why do the agricultural worlds give rise to high populations.

Perhaps, with all the automation in the future, people just have more time, if you get my drift. [yesnod]

This is similar to the question Willy Sutton (US bank robber) was asked as to why he robbed banks; "That's where the money is!"

People live in greater numbers where food is abundant.

duh ... because fruit, vegetables or gains tastes better than exhaust manifolds and radiation baffles! [yesnod] [haha]

Erm...it could be that those worlds are ELWs either naturally or by being terraformed and therefore make a nice planet to live on...therefore a high population compared to systems with only stations and outposts to live on which have a definite population cap.
