Survive SRV Impact at 350 km/hour???

Glacier Point Cliff Jump
Cmdr Parabolus

This post was in the exploration thread, but I decided to post it to the larger community. I recently jumped an SRV off a 16.5km glacier cliff face and made impact with the ground at 372km/hr (250 mph). Video below:

Located on the Perseus Arm at the southeastern edge of Via Maris rests Glacier Point, a 16km cliff face at the intersection of four glacial fissures, each with a 10km high cliff face. The fissuers collide at Glacier Point with a mountain ridge that runs parallel to the secondary canyon, leaving a steep cliff edge jolting upward from the moon’s surface. The mountain ridges are formed by fault lines scattered across the glacier’s surface, causing eruptions of slicate vapour geysers. The exposed glacier walls in the fissures, have slowly collected dust and dirt toward the bottom, giving the canyon floor a deep blue and green color. Make no mistake, stemming from the fault lines and collected material, the fissure’s floor is a mostly rugged and sharp surface hardly suitable for surfacer reconnaissince. What results, however, is one of the most dramactic views in the galaxy. Moreover, there appears to be low levels of glactic dust or fog at the bottom of the canyon floors, which reflect light off of the glacier’s edges - further leading the etheral atmosphere of Glacier Point.

Upon discovery of Glacier’s Point, Cmdr Parabolus attempted a dramatic SRV jump of off the cliff face. Reaching a max speed of 135m/second in his SRV (486km/hour), Parabolus daringly flew through the air more than 10,000ly from Sol. You may find a video of this cliff jump here:

Very cool find, +rep to Cmdr Parabolus

Though I thought in the beginning he was going to go straight down to the bottom of the chasm! :O

I wish I had video of it, but I found a rocky ice world enroute to SagA that had a 20km high mountain that butted up against a 10km deep canyon. After spending a few hours tooling around and taking some screen shots, I couldn't resist the urge to jump (didn't want to drive back down either), so put full pips to shields and went for it. I hit the side at some point and had to do a premium synth on the way down, and I had to do one or two after hitting the bottom while in mid bounce. It was a rush!

I'll have to see if I captured my speed while falling...

"Insufficient power, modules disabled!" I certainly hope those didn't include your thrusters! It has happened to others here.

Was that your T6 we see at the end doing a static tail stand? (ie. no thrusters)

it's good to have some measure of what the SRV is able to survive without having to try it on my own. :D

so put full pips to shields and went for it

So two quick tips re: SRV damage.

1) don't bother putting pips to shields, SRV shields offer zero protection against planetary impact damage. Put all pips to engines, only slowing your descent with boost can save you.

2) be warned that SRV's take a lot more damage when other players are in the same instance!

Lol! It was my planetary vehicle hanger turning off. Gotta have that stuff on power priorities! Funny that is my type-6 leaving, but I've never seen it in the video even though I've watched it over and over.

I have heard this from a few people, maybe it's just wishful thinking but I'm not convinced. I tend to notice less damage when i put pips to systems (same effect when ships ram one another sys pips help). Why would it not be the same for srv as it is for ships? I'm not saying you are wrong I just have never seen proof... I'm sure there has been testing. Any references?

Seems odd that Shields wouldn't help (not that I have really tested). Both 1 & 2 sound more like bugs.

That's always been the case, shields on an SRV only protect against weapon damage. IIRC the reasoning is that the wheels have to go through them to touch the ground, which actually makes sense. When in an SRV I usually put 4 pips to engines to maximize the amount of boost, in case I find myself dropping off an unseen cliff.

I am so excited to revisit Glacier Point after the graphics update in Q1 and Q4... I think it will make a perfect backdrop that matches what they are going for with their concept art!

That certainly makes sense for a portion of the damage, but one would assume the main hull and cabin were shield protected such that the shield would give perhaps 60% average damage cover (rather than 100% on a space bound ship that doesn't require physical contact)

Having said that, I do agree, shield currently seems to make no difference.

Also, wheels weren't protected, why don't skimmers just aim for the wheels? [I would just blow the wheels off!] It would turn your average SRV fight into a Monty Python Black Knight sketch though...

I believe in an attempt to fix the "SRVs mysteriously explode" bug, Frontier capped the damage an SRV can take in a single collision provided that it lands on its wheels.

(This may have mitigated the "mysteriously explode" bug to the point where it needed a larger instance to set it off, but it certainly didn't completely solve it)
