Aim with headlook

Just been playing Everspace and the aim with headlook feature is so much fun (kind of like having gimballed weapons tracking your head movement).

Do we have anything like it in Elite?

In multicrew i guess you could combine an ED tracker with a vr hmd and bind your pitch and yaw to it to get head aim for the turrets at least.

Other than that the target selection (for turrets) is head tracked as mentioned above i know of no firing possibilities independent of ship direction.

Yes this is how i target objects. Using the head look at the object will highlight it an the "Target ahead" button selects it. (Im using VR)

Yeah, guys, I get the target select thing - what I'm asking about is aiming guns where we look. I grabbed a quick video to show what I mean - excuse the quality, I'm not a streamer and just set everything in the game to low as this is my 15min drop-in/out game.

It really does add a layer of fun (I hate the ship movement in Everspace - it's more Descent than Elite) but I guess for them to implement it, if it's not in already, for VR players we'd need our own gun class halfway in power between a gimbal and a turret.

I don't believe we have that option in Elite. Honestly, I find the "head movement" aiming to be terrible. My neck gets sore after a while and it generally feels unnatural to aim like that. I tried to play Eagle Flight in VR and had to quit after a half hour, for the same reasons.

Yeah, weapon mounts will likely never move instantly to match your head look direction.
Even gimbals have a significant tracking speed. And being able to look somewhere else is definitely more useful anyway.

You solved it!

Very Rapid (VR) Weapons Mount for gimballed weapons.
This mod increases the weapons tracking speed and links the weapon system targetting directly to the pilot's viewpoint but also significantly increases the power draw of the weapon.

That would make it pretty impractical for PVP due to only being able to run a couple of them but would add a nice boost to PVE and introduce another engineer mod.

No no no...not another engineer mod...

What would be awesome is turret/gimbal option of locking to view with an on/off button. Balance towards chaff is a question, though I always felt chaff's effect overly dramatic.

Only a mod, not an actual grind to unlock engineer. I was trying to see a way around them putting it in the game without needing a whole new weapon class as it would be a bit overpowered if existing gimbals suddenly could get a huge arc of fire - hence the mod idea. Doesn't really matter, the coding and animation are probably not worth doing for the handful of VR users who'd use it.

Well, Elite is touted as a full VR game as opposed to "experiences" and Fdevs have crafted some excellent stuff...also VR is very much growing daily, so any effort in that department isn't wasted. Thinking about it I still can't decide if it will make a swipe at balance. I still would love that - balancing improved accuracy and resistance to chaff with possible neck trauma.

They aren't going to do this, or they would have, especially with the SRV turret and multicrew gunner view.

It simply just gives VR commanders too much of an edge, and we don't really need to be more superior than the poor screen locked schmucks than we already are.

They still need to at least keep keyboard and mouse based players thinking they have a shot, even though compared to my VR and HOTAS setup even though its almost the least functional control setup for these games ever.
