Best trade ship

I am now earning myself a few 1000 credits and wish to get a ship with a larger cargo bay that the 4 units in the starting ship.

What ship should I get, and/or should/can I get a larger cargo bay in my current ship?

Thanks in advance

Hey there, you will need alot more creds for buying another ship. If you are going for trading only for the most part you should upgrade to a Hauler, after that a type 6 or lakon type 9 would be the best choice. If you want to do alot of combat AND have some cargo space (36 i think) then go for a Cobra. Good luck Commander

Go for hauler with 16t cargo hold. You can't expand cargo hold in your current ship.

I never thought I would say it, but I would skip the cobra. Just go straight for a Lakon 6. Its almost as fast and maneuverable as a cobra, but the jump range is amazing and it can haul 100 tons. Before you know it, you'll be steering a space cow.

With the 100k price gap between the Cobra and the Lakon 6, I think it is still worth taking the Cobra, but only for a much shorter period of time.

A 100? Last time I saw it it was around 20 or 30. I remember saving for a Cobra, but skipped it because I was also able to buy a Lakon 6. I'm pretty sure I didn't overlook a 100k gap :S

If you have the cash to fill the hold then I'd agree. I've just bought a type 6 to test it out, but I'd been making cash in my Cobra so I had some trading money.

Speeds aren't same as a Cobra though. Top speed with 4 pips in engines is equal to a sidewinderbut it seems to be fasater than a sidey when you boost. But so far I'm finding it a nice ship.

I'd still recommend the Cobra as the trade stepping stone so you could earn faster if starting from scratch.

Edit. Oh yeah and agree the jump range is awesome even when full.

In the 1.01 patch they massively changed the prices I think it is 140k ish for a Cobra now and 220k ish for a Lakon 6 so 100k was a slight exaggeration but 80k is still a fair few runs in a hauler.

I saw a 130k type 6 today in the 1.02 patch.

I like the Calf (type6) so far.

When i opened up the galaxy map after purchasing the ship, i suddenly saw endless possibilities :)

Oh awesome if they have reduced the price again I will be on it like (insert topic simile here) .

Do you remember which system this was in? Also are you taking into account the fact that they take the value of your ship, equipment and cargo into account when pricing?

Would the Viper make any sense? the hauler is great for running cargo, but it only has 1 hardpoint. wouldn't the Viper be a great stepping stone on the way to a cobra / type 6, as it has 8 tons storage and can also stand its ground in a fight?

with a complete weapon loadout and 8 tons of cargo the jumprange is very limited. should be enough for the aulin<->i bootis round though

Also by taking the more expensive Viper over the cheaper Hauler you are halving the profit you can make. As beta is now with no risk trading the hauler is a great ship.

Hopefully as beta progresses FD will fix this and people will need to consider survivability as well as just maximizing profit. As it is now the game has very little to keep people hooked.

Depends what you mean by this. What were you flying at the time? The price you see takes into account trade in on what you are flying.

But to trade you don't need a full loadout. Particularly in a Viper because it can't be caught. It can reach places the Hauler can't so good for some missions. I used it as a step between Hauler and Cobra because the trade ins are good value and I hadn't flown it before so it was interesting.

To this day I'm not sure if I'll ever go beyond the Cobra.

Sure, the Lakoons can haul big time, but I feel like I'd be trading in versatility. There will be the day when I'll want to try something different than trading, without swapping vessels first...

Besides, Nostalgia. (Yes, oldscool Elite player here, skipped the other two.)

Everyone loves the Cobra. They did say there would be a Panther at some stage in Beta. If that comes in an update and there is no wipe between now and then I want a ton of cash in bank. So I'm going Lakon.

I don't remember the system, but I was flying the standard layout sidewinder with no cargo! :D
