Cancel Button Please?!?

Alright, this is my first official session. :D

Been playing this game for a couple of years. Finally decided to join in on a community goal, since I've been trying to rescue Cmdr Soylent Green from the Thargs before, I figured, what the 4377. So, jump into Pleiades IR-W D-55 and found the Naphtha Tanker and scooped me a few Thargoid Spam Cans. Jumped in and out a few times to respawn them (kinda silly, but beats flying all throughout the system until an A.S.S. (Alien Signal Source) appears. But, after several jumps, I went to hit my scoop key only to hit my Jettison key instead.

So, after that annoying little disaster, I went back and started it all over again, this time swearing to avoid that STINKIN' button again. Couple hours later, I got me about 90 tons of cargo and rescued 20+ Thargoid Energy Bars. I was jumping back into the tanker's locus when I noticed the alignment of the planets and thought to myself, that'd make a decent space selfie, so I flew past the tanker and was in the process of getting out my selfie stick, when all of the sudden, I here booms and explosions all about me. What the Fire Truck!? My ship is suddenly dumping my cargo?! All of it! I didn't touch that forking button!

Frantically looking for a way to stop it, the only thing I could think of was to cut power to the cargo scoop. No good. There went all my juicy cargo, exploding all around me. Disgusted, I got up, took a bio-break and when I came back, I realized some of my cargo was still there. It hadn't vanished in a puff of greasy smoke like the others, including the Thargoid Chow. Frantically, I searched for a means to rescue them, but... my limpets were dumped along with the rest of my cargo, so instead, I targeted the nearest Insect Appetizer and before I could remember that my scoop was disabled, BOOM! There they went.

Can we PLEASE have a "Nevermind!" button? Pretty please? With Thargoid honey on top? I mean, seriously, there ought to be a way to cancel certain operations you didn't mean to start, especially when you didn't start them?

And, yes, that cursed button has now been remapped to a combination press. That don't mean I ain't annoyed, though. ;)

And, now back to real world things...

Since most traders, smugglers and mission-runners have difficulty imagining a scenario where anyone would actually need the "jettison all cargo" button, most of us have made darn sure that no amount of button pressing or random-cat-walking-across-keyboarding can ever jettison all the cargo. I really have no idea why FD don't simply delete that as a programmable option. The only people I know who ever deliberately press it are the crazy political protestors who like to fill up a space station interior with biowaste.

Your 2nd paragraph had me laughing before you even got to the punch. I knew what you'd done as soon as you said "selfie".

I rebound my "Jettison all" button to <Left Ctrl><End>, that way I can't accidentally press it but can use it if wanted when pirated.

Don't even have the jettison function mapped, on the very rare occasions when I do have to get rid of cargo I go through the inventory menu on the RH panel - can't make a mistake there :D

I had a similar experience flying my T9 in VR recently. Picked up a mission to deliver X amount of goods to a system and decided to fill the ship up with excess to make an easy additional buck.

Unfortunately, I decided to use a key press rather than VA or even the menu to lower my landing gear. 442 tons of insulating membrane were dumped in the station vicinity, a 500k fine was racked up and my facepalm felt weird against an Oculus.

Fortunately, Commander Miu~ of the Support Wing was able to reset me. Moral of the story is to unbind jettison all!

Yeah, the voted "Most useless" and "Most Annoying" Jettison all Default Keybind... Right next to a Standard Ship Function Key.
That old Easter Egg of Frontier :D

There's only two types of Players :
- those that have bigfixed that Keybind by removing it
- those that still haven't... but who will eventually do so

On the other hand, if I remember correctly, last time I installed Elite (and forgot to backup my bindings, Grrr) the jettison function wasn't bound by default.

A good laugh in the morning. Thank you CMDR for the well written story and have some +rep.

And as others said... unbind the key and be lucky. Also make sure to relocate the boost button to a safe position.

Lesson 2: Double check that you have unbound the jettison all cargo button.

Guess what lesson 3 is? :D

... Don't have your boost button near your landing gear button? (Unless you like bouncing around inside station watching to see how long your shields last. Yes, that was me 31 months ago.) :)

Well, thank you all for the rep and the advice, and if I made ya laugh, that was my way of venting my frustration. :)

And, that's a good point about not really needing the jettison button, that thought had occurred to me too. I did rebind it to [End] + [Fire Button], however. That would allow me to jettison the cargo on the off-chance I picked up some trumbles or space-herpies.

But, seriously for a moment, Frontier takes time to animate the whole sequence. It literally took minutes for all my cargo to go poof, so... why does it have to go boom and why can't we have a "Oops" button? C'mon, Frontier? It ain't too much to ask. ;)

Amazingly, they never implemented a button for ECM (until recently), but this jettison all cargo button, used by.... who exactly? has been in the game since launch.
