I am sorry, I just couldn't do it any longer!

Firstly and most importantly, This is my preference only and in no way a complaint about the game or the team that made it.

I have been playing for quite some time and recently finally managed to get my second elite (trading) so figured I would try for the third (exploration). So I kitted out my beloved cutter with everything I could possibly need, AFMU, scoop, scanners etc etc and headed towards Colonia.

I aimed at Colonia simply because there is something there to aim for rather than just randomly jump scan and go until I think I have enough exploration money.

and so it began..... jump, bong, scoop - jump, bong scoop - jump bong scoop OOH UNDISCOVERED! scan, scan ,scan - jump, bong, scoop scan scan scan - jump bong scoop OOPS TOO CLOSE, FSD cool down, back into SC, jump, bong scoop - jump............. you get the idea.

after 5000LY, I was bored and reconsidering my place in the universe, by 8000 I was picking the plastic covers from the buttons in the cockpit and eating them like really chewy M&Ms. by 9000LY I was flying butt naked, standing on the seat and controlling the ship with my cheeks alone!

I just could not take any more, so I have turned round and am bonging my way back to the place I call home without so much as a scan scan scan on the way anymore, just Jump - bong - scoop till I get back to familiar territory.

I tried, I really did but the exploration side of the game has no interest for me and does not float my ship, I hope the trip home does give me enough to push me to Elite, I am 13% Ranger at the moment.

This little excursion has given me one thing (well except for the scratches on my coccyx and a new found ability to operate my cheeks independently) I have a new found and total respect for those that are able to endure the mind numbing boredom that exploration gives me.

I doff my cap to all of the explorers!

A possible answer: Two accounts (were on PC, now PS4). I usually alternate between exploring and other activities. That way, if the Space Rage (TM) sets in, I can always go back to another activity on the alternate account without cutting short a trip.

Mmmmm....Jump-BONG-scoop. That's why I do it.

Get thee onto an expedition young pilot. Nothing like being on a mahoosive expedition. Always seems to be at least one setting out and you know the old saying "boredom shared is boredom halved" or something like that. Why not join up with us on the DECE expedition, we could use a CMDR with independently controllable butt cheeks!

Loved your narrative. Sorry if your cheeks got chapped. Still only double-Elite and Ranger myself after 5600 hrs. Never got the explo-bug either. If you want an exiting new adventure try taking control of a systems and studying the BGS. That'll keep your interest for some time.

I play on my laptop so no option for double accounting, the only reason I went exploring was for the third elite, its not important enough for me to buy a second account :) I will get it eventually, just not by drifting around aimlessly in the vast expanse of space madness lmao

Thank you for your invite but every school trip or road trip has that annoying one that gets bored after the first hour and starts whining, being generally irritating or destructively bored - I would be all three and more hehe.

I am glad I am not the only one! my regular wingman stuck the middle finger up when I suggested it and basically said sod off, I will see you when you get back :D
We done the BGS system controlling in the past and had much fun learning how to affect and eventually control a system or three.

Narrative? it really happened! The wife was a little upset to come down one morning and find me banging my naked butt on the keyboard of my laptop! I did try and explain that my arm 'modules' are down to 47% integrity and I want to save them for docking when I get there but my cheeks are still at 97% so I would use them instead :D

You do not wanna know what happened when I suggested injecting a little boost :x

No need to apologise Cmdr (OP) I'm feeling exactly the same way as you at the minute. Carbon copy sentiment.

Try covering one of your limpets with bread and marshmallows, send it out and see how much you can toast with your pulse lasers!
5 points for each marshmallow and 10 points for each slice of toast. shooting the limpet and killing it is an instant fail.
Its a game requiring timing and a good aim.

Some can spend all their time exploring, some the majority and some just dip in. For me exploring is one of the things I can do when I am finding other stuff dull. I always set myself goals, get a cutter, corvette, unlock all engineers etc. The current one is the second myriad, i.e explore a total of 20,000 systems. I always explore in a new ship, so its a Cobra MKIV this time, my aim is to sing round the carini arm, cut back to colonia and back via the outer arm. Then I will do something else, probably elite combat. Keep it fresh, keep it varied, keep timescales realistic.

+rep to the OP, this story made me chuckle. For long monotonous trips, I usually set a few interesting waypoints on the way so I can proceed step by step. It helps a little.

That's too funny. Unfortunately i can just picture it. Excuse me while i poke out my minds eye :D

Probably best I don't tell you the story about the time (during my naked piloting) I had convinced myself that I could get an extra 0.01 LY on the FSD by jumping both at the time of plotting and the time of activating the FSD because my weight would not be part of the calculation as I would be in the air at the time!

Needless to say the smashing against the buttons immediately followed by a huge jump came do an abrupt end when I leapt over the seat and concluded my FSD assisted leap at the back of the cockpit with my head wedged in galley on the aft bulkhead between the coffee machine and the Haribo vending machine!

All I managed to do was turn into a mixture of Rockhound from Armageddon, Mr Bean and Tim the toolman Taylor [big grin]

That is why I never did any real exploration either.

I will go exploring when...

1. we get access to atmospheric planets and gas giants
2. the exploration mechanic has been improved, that is... made more engaging and interesting.

Especially my first point will take several more years of development. That I accept completely.
As far as my second point is concerned I really hope FD will turn it around, because a good core mechanic for exploration is of vital importance for a spacesim like ED.
Elsewhere I have proposed a change in the boring honk mechanic and the introduction of a cool exploration probe mechanic that makes uses of the coveted orrery map view. This would add more depth to exploration. Also important is the addition of a cool visual feedback screen when you get information about planets.
What would also help the lone explorer is the addition of npc crew.
And last but not least a supercruise mechanic that gives the player more piloty things to do, more agency, more control over how the ship behaves in sc. This could be done with a different supercruise pip management system to regulate ship behavior and a special supercruise ship HUD.

Great post - totally get it!

"It was at this moment Roly knew..."

But seriously man, that's awesome! I've gotta try that myself, have about 1000 jumps until I get to Colonia, maybe I can perfect the cheeky maneuvers as(s) well. :)

I have just noticed the universal censors have removed a key word from many posts!

Really, was that such a bad word?

Anybody read any of the space team books?

Bunch of Shizznods is all I will say :D

I wish you all the best in your travels!
I am still 357 from home, suppose I better but some clothes back on as the locals may not appreciate a new moon in the system, although some pillock will try to scan it and claim credits for a new discovery :D
