Do you ever wish ED supported Mods?

I do!

I know it's not possible in a persistent world though, but communities have a nasty habit of allowing you to fully customise your gaming experience, down to every detail. Which IMHO, is always a good thing, and leads to almost endless replayability (Is that a word?).

We've got an awesome community here, and I do wonder what it would be like if ED was as moddable as say, Skyrim.

Again, I understand it's not at all possible, due to the nature of the game. I just wondered if anyone felt the same?

Yes I do, but I do understand why FDEV can't support mods.

But mods would probably give you something that works 4 out of 10 times, and you would be ok with it.

Because free :)

Define mods.

If you mean external apps that gives you info there's plenty of that for ED. There are mods who tweak visual appearance of graphics. Not sure what else you could add to the massive online game here.

If it were offline single player like the original games I'd love it the galaxy framework is like a modders dream if they can create storylines and stuff like that. Since it's multiplayer currently mods would be just asking for hacks/cheats.

On top of that the Cobra Engine is still under wraps with Frontier and creating a creation kit as Bethesda did for their engine is no small task.

Personally I hope when the development ends, the servers are closed and the sunset date is reached we will have one final update allowing offline play, control of the galaxy state (go back to any point in time in the timeline for example before Jaques or whatever) and giving us a creation kit. I think that it'll have an utterly massive resurgence and if FDev kept selling it as a standalone they'd make a good deal of cash, maybe a donate button too if people want to say thank you.
Obviously the second the creation kit goes out they loose all the store items sales since mods will flood that particular cosmetic market quickly.

I have hopes but none of them before the games end. I'm going to quote Surly Badger when I say, if the game ends and there are no mods or servers then "our plan is to declare victory and quit". :D

By mods, I basically mean the ability to modify or add almost anything.

Community made ships, stations, missions, POIs, etc.
As well as overhauling gameplay, adjusting difficulty, spawn rates and types, adding new stuff entirely, etc etc.

That sort of stuff. :)

So many people want so many different things from ED, it would just work, if it wasn't for the online persistent world thing. Lol

My hope, is when ED is grey and old, and support is ending, that we can start creating customised servers to play on.

Obviously he means gameplay mods, player ships, custom textures, new sounds. You know, mods. He even explicitly tells you he knows you cant do it in an online persistent game, he is just thinking out loud how cool a modded ED in the style of a TES game could be.

Modding was the one reason I bought into the beta, however when the "online only" bombshell dropped 2 weeks before launch I was gutted along with many other modders out there. I asked for a refund.

Decisions, decisions ...

When I read about ED, I was hoping for an offline game. Maybe with hop in/out co-op.

I do wonder how much processing power it would take to run the entire BGS for 1 player.
I know X3 used to get laggy if you placed satellites in every system. And there was only 150~ systems. Lol
But we can't view much on other systems in ED. So I imagine it wouldn't be as harsh.

But we would have to store the information on 400,000,000,000 systems.... I'd need a bigger HDD. Lol

It would be nice, I'd support any mods that do not give an advantage, or silly stuff, you just know there's a modder who wants to put in a banana shaped ship.

Huh? You asked for a refund three years ago? :S

Its not processing power. The rules dont work with one player. You can flip tiny systems on your own, but the entire game assumes a ton of people doing all kinds of stuff.

No I don't. I don't think mods in multiplayer games that aren't designed from the start to allow you to create your own content (NWN) are a good thing.

And joined the forum 1 year ago :S

Being able to mod the User Interface would be nice.

i'd like to customize the HUD, for example show my reputation in the station which I have selected, or display the star type I'm jumping to for a longer time, or change how some input from the keyboard/HoTaS work. I know some things can be done with overlays (such as by Captain's Log or by Trade Computer Extension Mk.II) and keyboard macros, but a scriptable UI would be cool.

I'd absolutely love a single-player, or single-server, mod-able variant of Elite. The most annoying thing about the game (and the reason I'm not playing anywhere near as much as before) is the weird modelling of the economy and massively-over inflated mission rewards for some types of activity.

That would require an offline game mode and yes, I would love to see it. With our community I`m sure ppl would come up with amazing mods and additions. I was very upset when FD cancelled offline mode for that exact reason.

Well. Warhammer Online was moddable despite being a competitive MMO. World of Tanks also has mods. But the developers there have/had to spent a lot of their worktime making sure they don't turn into cheats. And they did either way. I love mods in my single player games especially Bethesda ones. But multiplayer? No, too much problems for the game.
