Hat's off to the Explorers out there

I scan everything in a system ........... if I'm scanning the star and it's the only body in whole system! :p

Exploring means just be as far from the bubble as you can stomach!

lol

There's no place like in the middle of nowhere :D

I did a full surface scan of every body, including the belts and for all my efforts I received the grand total or just over 300,000 credits. This was for just over 90 minutes work.
In all fairness, explorers doing it that way, scanning all the things, tends to get tired of it, too. It's not very rewarding and it's not a very efficient way of doing it. That's basically like buying all the commodities on every station and selling them on the next, or shooting at all the things, no matter what you'll make (or lose).

I think Earth like worlds are very undervalued considering you have discovered a new planet suitable for life. The payouts should be huge for those.

Haha, the thing I had to work on most as an early explorer was to avoid the ocd temptation to scan everything in a new system. Now, I usually just scan the main star and anything interesting. If it's a "community system", I often will just scan the next thing and go. Sometimes, I will still scan a whole system if it's easy, or has an Earth-like, or I just feel like it.

OP here, quick thanks for all the responses (and the Reps).

Just to reiterate, I only did my little exploration journey due to using those system for missions. And since that I have found that taking missions there are a lot easier due to being able to identify which piece of floating rock is which :D Also kind of helped that I now know what the landable planets in case I need certain maps.

Again, well done to those who live in the black, I hope you all find that elusive ELW that you can put your name to :D

There's no real need for scanning asteroid belts. You don't get extra money for doing it, and the detailed surface scan doesn't tell you what minerals are in it.

I have great memories from my first explorstion tour with GNE expedition, I wish I was there for Distant Worlds. There are many hours of boredom and space craziness I erased from my memory implants too, I won’t lie. But exploring can be profitsble, I mad 700mn last week with the Road to Riches and certainly could reach almost 1bn with 30 jumps a day, by far not the worst grinding value. Also, exploration gave me my first Elite rank. Like you said, not an easy feat, but rewarding with some relaxing time, some boredom and a few minutes of pure terror too.

Absolutely this :)
My previous exploration project was to go out to a fully unexplored system and then create a ~20ly bubble around it where I had scanned all the things.

Haha, I did this too - but to a ~150ly bubble. It took months. I'm still not sure why I did it either; not much money in M class suns with RICE.

Still, Elite explorer rank was nice at the end of it :)

I've just returned from a week long epxloration trip some 5000LYs towards the core and back.
Found some nice undiscovered systems, including one Earth Like world, lots of waterworlds and one ammonia world.
I ran into one of the abandoned megaships and 'found' Morgan's Rock astroid base by accident.
It's pretty nice that there are now actually things to find.

The whole trip was relaxing and made me around 30 million in credits.

Very nice, I obvious lack ambition! :D
One day I'll have that Elite explorer rank.. It's the only one I'm really fussed about :)

Finding these things by accident is a truly unique experience, I wish more surprises (friendly ones) were available for explorers.

I hunt Terraformables mainly. At ~Cr400k each, they are highly lucrative. Extra bonus when the rocky moon is also a TF. I've not yet been back to the bubble since the new payout scheme was introduced so I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like. My previous largest payout was Cr515k for NYUENAA MC-D D12-2069.

Edit: Should also give honourable mention to Eol Prou AR-T d4-1660 which has 8 x Terraformables. ~CR3.2m by todays standard! (I got CR418k)
Yep same, and I mainly do A B and G stars, memorizing the habitable range and adjusting by patterns in the layout. Pays nicely at LYR powerplay 5.

I'm currently about 20,000 Lys from the bubble...I set out to give my newly engineered Asp (recently returned to the game) a shakedown cruise.

Somehow it turned into a Sagittarius A*/Great Annihilator run, since I'd never been and I was pointed that direction anyway...and now I'm on the way back.

So far 10 ELW's, about the same for ammonia worlds, and hordes of WW's...I must confess to being a cherry picker, I only take the best, the rest aren't worth the time.

Didn't use to be that way, I once thought I was gonna scan every last thing in every last system...yeah, no. That didn't last long.:|

So, why aren't there missions for explorers? Plenty of trade and combat missions, ain't found one yet that wants me to go scan star system X.

There are missions like that. Some passenger wants to go to some horrid place a billion ly away to collect data for like 10 mil or something. I see them, but never do them.

That's not exploration though.

That's tourism. Even the things you have to scan are tourist beacons.

But yeah, tourism payouts are absolutely broken for the time involved. But Frontier apparently use a formula where everything has a low value but then if it's involving combat, even if it's just stomping some harmless NPC 8LY away, then a 10 times multiplier is applied to the payout.

Whenever any change happens that makes tourism financially viable, they quickly patch it out within 24 hours.... keeping bugs in is fine.... but tourism payouts? Got to nerf the frell out of them before people get the wrong idea about doing anything but combat or broken trade loops for their credits.
