Why the hate for playing in open?

It's actually very simple. People like different things, and some people simply don't like interacting with others, or prefer to not be used as a potential punching bag. Some people like burgers, some don't. Some eat meat, some don't. Whatever, live and let live.

Me being in open doesn't hurt them, and them being in solo/PG doesn't hurt me. Let's all just get along and enjoy the game.

Z...

The thread wasn't started as what do you like, but what lead to the angst against playing in open. While some I agree like different things and prefer to play alone. This doesn't hurt my interest in the game in the slightest. More so I was wondering why when people spoke of playing in open it usually was followed with such disdain at the thought of playing in open. I was wondering if that disdain was based on anything. Most of it seems to stem from the PC community and the issues they deal with. While I completely understand those issues, I didn't realize the collaboration of players across platforms on the different forums.

I play both. After work or when I just want to zone out, I play solo. People are unpredictable and I don't need the stress if I can avoid it. That said, I find open to be more fun because the community seriously carries this game.

I'd like some input here as someone who exclusively plays in open. I constantly read while perusing the forums people stating they only play solo or PG and that they won't even bother with open. What's the deal? Are people that afraid of losing their ship and ending back at the rebuy? I get dropping to solo if you can't get a parking spot at a CG or something like that, but to completely ignore he entire galaxy out there seems to go against what this game means.

I started playing on Xbox nearly two years ago and the player population was already quite high with established player factions and skilled pilots. The ganking and hobo murders were at every cg and popular station and there were no repercussions for their actions (just a game I know). The whole “play your own way” thing becomes a bit redundant when you have to play to the style of the meta that is set by those types above and not the designers. There are infinite AU enemies in the game for me to fight or run from and I don’t want to play a game during my leisure time where someone just wants to slap their epeen in my face just because they can. I have to deal with stuff like that irl.
Most players in game are good people but it only takes one ahole to spoil your day!

This is really rather amusing.

First you attempt to shame, saying those who do not play in open are afraid. Very grade school.

Then you drag out the long discredited "Dangerous" argument. Several years back David Braben said in an interview that the name was a reference to the Pilot's Federation rating.

Now, at last, you come to the issue. You want to murder and rob "morally", as if that's even possible.

Allow me to refresh your memory:

Hahahaha BAH! Ethics is just the principles that govern your behavior and morals are just a point of perspective! The only real truth is good solid credits

That's what grownups call moral relativism, and it's pure steaming meadow muffins. Moral relativism is just an excuse for bad behavior toward others.

Why do I rarely play in open? It is not my desire, intent, or interest to provide spoiled children with entertainment or soothe their tragic ennui. The minutes of my life that I've invested in this game are the only thing of value that I actually have. I trade those minutes for food, shelter, trainsportation, and everything else I desire including entertainment. When they are taken from me by force in this game it is absolutely no different from street corner armed robbery. Until I can do to the person who robs me in game what I would do to the person who robs me on the street corner I will have no interest in spending significant time in open.

i dont understand the mechanics of Ps4 too well.maybe its the wrong place to ask,but i cant find the snapshot button/screenie.i cant even find it in options. What am i missing?

I think it's depending on the platform PC it's a choice. Some people like to play it like the old Elite games with no other humans around.

Consoles it could be financial after all some people buy the game but don't want to subscribe to the account upgrade to play in open.

All are valid and everyone has that choice on PC I've been in open for many months now and I've met loads of cmdr's some talk some don't.

Another reason for flying in Solo or PG is screenshots. You can't take high-rez screenshots in Open.

Although this is the PS4 forum, screenshots work fine in Open.

Native file save format is BMP. EDdiscovery changes that to PNG as I take the image.
If I was in Open, I could only get 1920x1080 images (my screen rez) using F10.
In PG or Solo I can save at 7680x4320 using ALT+F10.

Again does not apply to PS4 (and we are in the PS4 forum still) screenshots are 1080p (or 4K upscaled on the Pro, although for reference they seem no better) in JPG or PNG regardless of mode played in.

By default if you press the share button I think it takes a screenshot, you can alter the options by pressing and holding the share button.

Out of interest spent a good few hours at the CG place last night trying to kill Thargoids (with little success). Only got interdicted by a murderhobo (as in no demands, no chat, just attacked) once and escaped his engineered FDL in my alien fit FGS.

Hi

I exclusively play in Open. When I first started playing the game on PC a couple of years ago I would play in Solo, as I was worried about so called “griefers”. I then joined a Private Group (Mobius - of which I am no longer a member) in order to see other “real life” players as I travelled around. Once or twice I would pluck up the courage to go into Open for a few minutes.

Since getting this game on PS4, on day one of release, I play exclusively in Open. Honestly, it’s not the Wild West that so many make it out to be. Yes, you occasionally run across a griefer, but on the whole the vast majority of the players just want to play the game and allow others to do the same. People seem to act as if griefers are all the best combatants the game has to offer. They are not. Whilst there may be some who do fight well, the majority just like to try their luck. Sometimes they win, often they find they have bitten off more than they can chew. Most are cowards and will only attack you if they are in a wing. But then again, this is the nature of the game; play as you like. I accept the risk that I may get killed by somebody out there, but even in Solo there are NPC pirates who are tough.

So, in short, I play in Open as I like the uncertainty of what I am going to experience that day.

I only use Solo for instance switching at Dav's Hope but I rarely play in Open as I prefer PGs.

Why? Because I don't PvP. I like to play with others in co-op, hence the PGs and you are far more likely to meet someone if it's been prearranged among friends. The same goes for CGs: they get very busy in MobiusPVE.

Elite just isn't a PvP game for me. It never was and I don't want it to be now. It's great that it's there for those who enjoy it, though.

Counter question:

Why do we see posts (frequency varies, but they do keep cropping up) from Open players asking why more people don't play Open. Surely all the people who want to play in Open are playing in Open. What's the problem?

I don't recall a single post (by all means, link me) from someone asking "Why don't more people play Solo?" or "Why don't you play in a private group?"

Why I dont fly in open...easy answer. Cant be bothered with the kiddy mentality of the gankers...I didnt come here to play that sorta game and solo means I dont have to...at all.

Until a working karma system is in place then thats the end of the argument far as Im concerned...nothing to see here except hotel california arguments that become circular very quickly.

Losing ships doesnt bother me...being in a situation where I could lose a ship to some kiddy does bother me greatly however because of the lack of consequences ergo open is simply a place to avoid.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've played almost every day since Elite came out on the PS4 - and every day I've played I've played in open - but I've only once been interdicted by another Commander. I was in a Vulture and I can't remember what he was in, something bigger I think. Even then there wasn't a fight. I wasn't carrying any cargo and didn't deploy hardpoints, he didn't attack so I just flew off.

I'm guessing most of the problems with open occur on PC where the game is more established and, presumably, the player base is larger.

I mainly play in PG. (PS4)
Played in open quite a bit but have been destroyed without warning which put me off. Could have avoided it if i was more prepared and ready to jump.
I prefer to play in PG and have less stress whenever i see another player on the scanner.
I think the PS4 suffers less than other platforms because many people havent had the time to engineer there huge battle ships yet.

Nope I never had a problem on PC, just PS4, the majority are more mature on PC.

More as two years in Open (PC) in the bubble. I was killed once for newbie mistake, then few more times due pilot error and once due hardware failure. All those sayings how is Open certain death and that everywhere waiting griefers are fairy tale only. Safe play in open is about in-game knowledge and about proper preparations when you want go to the area where are expected possible "unfriendly" cmdrs. Cmdr which use to playing in Open is self deciding how much dangerous and adrenaline want have during his play session and be also prepared that his plans may need change due other cmdrs. In short: Open is more fun :)

Well to refresh your memory the comment you quoted was in jest. However, I don't think anywhere I have said would prefer to murder ethically? I'm not sure how that's even a thing. My play style has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Simply put and I think you can plainly see it in this thread alone some have a rather pent up animosity for open. I was simply wondering what had led to that animosity. As you can see from a few posts down one poster is upset the topic was brought up again, to which I have already made a comment on earlier on this thread to answer that question as they weren't the first. Mentioning playing in open stirs up a lot of feelings and it seems to be one of the more decisive topics. For someone who hasn't played any of the other Elites and was introduced to this game on PS4 it's natural to wonder why this decisiveness and attitude exists in the first place. Thanks for the verbal scolding on what you believe my behavior to be. Whether people play in open or solo is of no concern to me. Would I rather them play in open? Sure, I believe it helps the games staying powe, especially on the PS4. Plus, in my opinion it allows for more variation in game play activities and incidents that take place. Simply put games have moved away from the play by yourself model and the games that have the staying power that last longer tend to have a better more inclusive multiplayer aspect. I love playing this game and would hate to see it impacted because it didn't have the support it needed from the player base. I doubt very much that would happen on PC, but sales on PS4 were below expectations and that could have an impact down the road.

I believe that everyone can choose to play the way they want. But what I find strange are the statements of gankers / griefers .... I spend weeks without seeing a single player, when I look at my list of contacts found, the last was weeks ago, only in specific places I can find players and of course pvp like maia, merope and cgs

I very rarely play on my PC but found the opposite, been attacked way more on the PC and put way less hours in than on the PS4 where I have put 100s of hours in. I guess it depends where in space you are rather than the platform to be honest.

Good guys and bad guys everywhere on every platform.
