Linus looks at Pimax 8k

Backing the Pimax is a crazy gamble, no question there, I'm not going to starve if it turns out to be a paperweight, and if I do I'l try and get my money back on the used market.
I just might since as the early backer I would be getting my unit a few months before the non backers and so far the hype is strong on this.

As for all the reviews, they are done on early prototypes, the strides they have made between each protoype, and I suspect linus here was using the v2, which doesn't even have physical IPD adjustemnt.
I am taking the crazy gamble I that will get a unit that might compare to the vive one year ago.
Which seriously felt like a rewised prototype and steamvr software was a PAIN compared to today.

I pretty much had to run room calibration every time I started a session, seriously, and halfways through some of them I would drop below the game floor and would have to run again..

I think linus gave a rather honest and fair review, of the kit he had, and that's the best he can do, worst someone like this does is to assume what I assume when I pledged for it that problems xyz will be fixed on release.

I am still surprised Pimax hamstrings themselves with just using this laptop for demoing. And all their video demonstrations are just one dude playing a game being shot with a handheld camera.

No FPS counters or anything the entire community is actually looking for, cause we honestly don't believe we can run the 2560x1440 in elite on recommended specs.

I have backed the Pimax 8k recently. They are having problems hitting 90 Hz and they don't know why. All of the parts they use are 90Hz certified but there seem to be some lingering compatibility issues... They had currently verified 82Hz on the Mk3 concept last week and say that 85 is currently under test... They also say that they want to release 5 concepts before the final build.

The Mk.2 which Linus tested was rumoured to be running at about 75 which even with just 100° FOV is the absolute minimum. And you know it's going to be an issue when a battle hardened VR soldier like Linus lasts a mere 5 minutes.
Knowing that wider FOVs exacerbate dizziness issues, 90 is really a bare necessity rather than icing on the cake...

I'm sure that future HMDs by other manufacturers are going to be pushing 120 or even 144Hz in the quest for a silky smooth experience.

Still as a cockpit experience, ED should be fine @85Hz if the positional low pass filtering is not too extreme. SRV might be a stretch, though. That can be a barf fest at the best of times.

edit-

I, personally would be far happier for them to miss the deadline even by an entire quarter if it means they'll deliver a quality product... But then I backed SC, so I know what the word SOON™ means.

I think we would struggle to notice the difference between 85hz and 90hz. Could be wrong though. I will be only using 75hz as that will be all my GPU will be able to deliver with DP1.2. I will tell you if I seen any difference between that and my rift when it comes.

Agreed, if the software, screens and runtimes are tuned for 80hz-85hz.
The reason why those fps's behave so poorly for current gens is they are tuned to 90hz and has frame stepping issues with those slight decreases in FPS.
Which is one reason we get almost nothing between 90fps or interpolated 45fps.

As a backer I thought this also, actually when Linus talks about those issues to be fixed by release, a number of them are already fixed in v3
Pity he took so long to upload the review, ultimately not very helpful to anyone.

I don't think the purpose of this is really to be helpful, it's mostly just to get the most amount of people to talk about the HMD from Pimax, the non pledged will have to at least wait until spring\summer next year, and us pledgers will at best be a large scale beta test and hype machine going forward.

Of course that hype machine has a reverse gear option so if they don't deliver satisfactorily it could possibly ram Pimax straight into the ground.

But from what I hear of how they have supported the issues with the 4k, and how they seem to actually at least intend to listen to comments from backers I am hopeful.
And the main reason why I never considered the 4k an option, is simply the lack of positional tracking.
With Valve lighthouse built into the 8k, that's now a non issue.

And just the thought of that 200 degree fov.

It did strike me the upload was after the kickstarter ended. I personnally didn't think it was particulary postive.

I actually bought a CV1 a week before this went up and could easily have returned it - I haven't mainly because I don't pre-order and because I very much doubt my PC could manage ED at 2*2560x1440.

Was an average review with little detail. Seemed to be annoyed that they gave him a broken controller and didn't seem to know much about VR. Not much good to say.
