The Samsung Odyssey...

SteamVR has async time warp. Also MS has dabbled with some form of ASW. Whether it will show in the Windows VR API is unknown at this point.

I believe the asynch rendering used by either oculus and steamvr are hooking into the same DirectX Api set (albeit slightly differently).
it is a windows 8.1 or above only feature after all.
And considering their incredibly low recommend system req for AR I would assume they have it.

The real important thing for gaming would be steamvr integration.
When that is in Bob's your uncle.
Wouldn't be surprised if even re-vive would enable oculus exclusives.

Hope to see support for Microsoft's VR platform.

The Samsung Odyssey VR sounds really good from the early previews.

Oh that's very disappointing indeed as it looked like the one to buy. I guess I could have a mate bring one back from the states but then no warranty and no chance to try before buying puts me off. Looks like the Dell Visor is probably the second best bet. I like the flip visor design, I can order in the UK to compare it with the Rift. Using my own headphones is no hardship but it is slightly lower res than Samsung (1440x1440) compared to (1440x1600) which is probably meaningless - but it's significantly higher res than the Rift (1080x1200). What is interesting is that the Dell and all the other mixed reality headsets use an LCD IPS display like the iphone whereas the Samsung (and as far as I know the Rift and Vive) use AMOLED.

There are many who argue that screen door effect is less visible on the LCD displays than the AMOLED ones so I wonder if the Dell might be a better option? That might also explain why Pimax are moving towards LCD?
https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleCard...xels_and_vr_an_examination_of_ips_vs_pentile/ It's screen door effect which is the most disappointing part of current VR to me and because it's more visible against light colours Elite masks its effects I think.

I've got about 2-3 weeks return window on the Rift. Think I'm going to order the Dell Visor today to compare. It's just a shame I can't run Elite on it yet.

Thoughts?

Personally, If I was you, I'd try to get a Vive - maybe a used one? -- that way you can re-use all the controllers and tracking when you upgrade to the Pimax next year :) hehe

Not sure why they're not releasing in the EU .. maybe distribution/cost issues? - plus if they did, they would need to market it there.. so that's more money as well ..

mostly legal reasons as consumer protection laws mean consumers can return the product within a certain time if it is not as expected.
tech support has to be in order for a two year guarantee..........I think their procedure is you pay to send it to China and negotiate with them
by contrast I had an issue with my rift and they sent me a new one which arrived 3 days after I sent mine using a sticker they provided.

Well, yes ... the picture was definitely pin sharp, but that's to be expected with 2 x 4k screens in it. I already own the Pimax 4k BE model and that's already higher res than the rift and vive and light years ahead of my PSVR (which I would consider more of a casual VR unit anyway) but truly, what utterly blew my mind was the increased FOV with this. I already have a great FOV when not in VR with my 21:9 monitor, and this is basically taking that experience into VR.

I can't wait to try this headset with Elite.

The extra FOV with the Pimax though, is essentially just stretched edges though right? Unless of course the game has been made specifically with that extra FOV in mind. At least that's what they said in the Tested preview of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuVWs9IZIvk

That is definitely not the case and I wish Tested would post a retraction on the "looks like the HMD is stretching the edge of the screen", as that is not what it does. The prototype version Tested tried had some IPD adjustment issues, which led to aberrations at the edge of the screen (at least that's the current explanation), plus Norm was using his glasses, which quite frankly rival telescope objective lenses, so unlikely to have helped matters. Subsequent reviews have been much more positive, with none of the issues the Tested guys encountered and they have a new prototype being demo'ed, which should be even better (reviews from people who have tried it are due in any time now). I've been watching Tested content since around 2013 and I must say their treatment of PiMAX compared to say Valve and Oculus, has been a little suspect in this case IMHO.

From everything I've read and my use of the PiMax 4K ^ this is wrong - the game does have to be coded to take advantage of the extra FOV. Wouldn't it have to, how is going to know to send a 200 degree image to the 8k vs. the ~110 degree to the Rift/Vive? Where would all those extra pixels come from, the game would have to generate them. Have you ever played on a triple screen, 5760x0180 setup? Sure I get an image on my left/right displays but it's not like I get a true 3x more view as the edges are horribly warped out as the game is coded for that original single screen. This is why it's important to get racing titles that support proper 3 display vs. something like Nvidia Surround (which Elite has to use). The difference in racing titles is pretty huge and unless I'm wrong the same issues would apply to the 8K headset.

I too am greatly looking forward to the increased FOV as to my eyes that's the biggest limitation with current gen VR (Rift CV1 owner here). I also don't think it's out of the question that Frontier would support the 8K as they've been leaders in VR since the beginning - then again given the geological pace at which they've developed lately I wouldn't hold my breath.

So what am I missing, how would it not be warped without them coding to support it?

Three screens is not the same as FOV... I've used three screen setups that natively work (i.e the game is designed to support it) and those that don't (and use 3rd party tools to change the FOV). The result is the same.

The API used with the Pimax works for nearly all games (apparently!) and just as Elite works with Ultra wide monitors, the FOV at 200 degrees should be fine as well.

I beg to disagree but the results are absolutely not the same. While they may be somewhat similar the way things are rendered and the lack of "fish eye" effect when something is properly formatted for 3 screens vs. 1 is absolutely different. And while that's true it is or could be beside the point - what I'm pointing out is that games DO have to be coded to take advantage of the increased FOV period. I have no idea if that's hard or not and given that Frontier has been a leader in VR so far I'd hope they'd be excited to support it quickly - we'll just have to see.

As I kept us off-topic let me bring us back - does anyone actually own this headset yet? I've seen that it'll have SteamVR support by "end of the year" or "before the holidays" - anyone hear any different? I've had a Rift since release (Kickstarter Backer) and am interesting in the higher resolution OLED that they Odyssey has. I had the Pimax 4k for a few days, while the 4k panel was nice for screendoor the horrendous panel they used looked like total crap compared to the Rift (and the Rift was better in every possible way). Another reason I'm not hopeful for the Pimax 8K as early reviews are the LCD they are using sucks compared to the Rift (the LTT preview was interesting).
