Exploration Progression: Driving a SRV on Surface of Planet

Hi CMDRs,

According to the Wiki "Exploration progression can also be gained by driving an SRV (the further from Sol you are, the quicker you gain progression this way), and by collecting materials on the surface of a planet or moon, with a significant bonus the first time you discover a material."

I was wondering if this means of progression is in affect and how the progress works.

Thanks

7990km (almost 8Mm) and 1167 materials equaled 14% progression at Ranger at Beagle Point for me.

OMG!! Did you circumnavigate a planet or something! And way out there at the edge of our galaxy. Amazing achievement. Erm i am gob smacked. Congratulations. We should start a EGRBB Elite Galaxy Record Breaking Book :p

Back to the question. And answer. My opinion all that km for that percentage is just not worth the effort me thinks. But thanks i get an excellent idea of how the values are obtained. Not sure however what amount of that percentage was for the materials and what was for the distance travelled.

To be honest I don't think the materials contribute. There was a 660km stretch where I collected none and went up 1% which seems consistent. Probably around 600km per % is the number (at Ranger). I was not watching the progress actively...I was just noting the numbers at the end of each day.

New material discoveries do make a difference however. My feeling is around a third to a half a % based on discovering polonium on BP7 (1 unit.....was before they tripled the yield) and around 300km later progression went up.

Overall....not the the way to progress. But it's a nice bonus. I imagine it'll make a much bigger difference when first starting out :)

Thank you :) Started off as what seemed like a good idea but I really didn't comprehend just how long it would take!

I think, Disorganise, that the Dev's have got the reward about right here. It would be too tempting for some to go to a flat ice planet and let the SRV run for hours on end just to progress. I am at Pioneer 16% and was just curios to see if i could move the bar a little by using the SRV explorer reward. Glad to say i am playing the 'normal' progress method and not tempted :) After all its more about flying and discovering than exploring with the SRV and getting materials. At least to me that is.

There's flat planets?

The SRV will run out of fuel every so often and there always seems to be pebbles to smash into!
But you're right, making progression by SRV too easy would result in 'cheat'. I like how it is. A nominal reward which is generous given the no risk aspect.....the progression is instant and continuous rather than needing to get back to station to hand in discoveries.

There are round planets? :S I belong the the Flat Earth Society.

You are right i did not think about the fuel and terrain. And yes the no risk reward is generous in context. No worries then :)
