What is that Pentagon In Shop Menu?

I've seen discussion on this and nothing that seems right. So I had a look and see what you think about my theory.

Non-weapons - 1/5
Class 1 or 2 weapons - 2/5
Class 3 or 4 weapons - 3/5
Class 5 or 6 weapons - 4/5
Class 7 or 8 weapons - 5/5

That's possible but if that's true, it just seems kind of redundant for them to do this when the UI needs more important information implemented.

I looked again. That's not what the pentagon means. I saw a Class 4 weapon with only 3 parts of the pentagon filled in.

I asked this earlier and got no reply.

Seems like a very simple one for a DEV and they do troll the board. Maybe if you put "flight model" in the title Mr. Brookes would respond.

Surely it will be documented prior to release.

... or I'm right. I only had time to visit 2 stations but I chose 2 that have lots of ship modules for sale. So that pattern fitted for 6 pages of modules with no exceptions. I'll fly around more tomorrow but just keep an eye out yourself as you around.

But that is just plain dumb.

Why have a Pentagon and need to use fractions to determine what you can mount where?

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

If you are right they should just use an Octagon! Unless there is some other calculation/reason behind this maddening mystery.

I've seen a pattern that fits, instead of saying it is stupid I challenge you to find a ship module that breaks the pattern. That's what I'll try and do as well.

There is no reason FD can't answer the question.

I have sent the question to the newsletter Mostly Harmless Questions mailbox. I hope for a response next Friday.

However, there is no sense to have it a pentagon and split values unless there is a specific reason behind it. If there are 8 classes of weapon then an Octagon makes sense and a Pentagon does not.

Or do you have a real explanation for this oddity?

I don't mean to be aggressive but I find your response to be a bit odd since an Octagon would serve the same purpose, be more granular and be super-easy to understand.

I'm not saying it isn't odd. But since the pattern fits that seems to be it's intended purpose. I can't tell you why a pentagon is being used since it wasn't my decision.

An Octagon wouldn't really cover what the Pentagon does. Really the difference between Class 1 and 2 weapons in unimportant. There are no class 1 mount. Mounts only have even numbers. So if it helps I can rephrase the idea.

1/5 Non weapons
2/5 Weapons that fit class 2 hard points
3/5 Weapons that fit class 4 hard points
4/5 Weapons that fit class 6 hard points
5/5 Weapons that fit class 8 hard points

That is the same information but you can see with 4 sizes of hard points and non weapons that is 5 things.

But I don't think this will be solved by discussion. Facts win arguments. My challenge still stands - find me a ship module that breaks that pattern.

I can't argue with your logic and well put.

Will peruse the manual whenever available to explain it officially. Or who knows, maybe one of the upcoming newsletters they will choose my question. :)
