Hardware & Technical Controller method

Revamp of an old Trustmaster favourite. Nice to use but accuracy will go out the window with age circa 9 to 12 months irc.

I'm currently playing OOLITE with the XBOX contoller and KB. While not all functions are bound to the controller I can do the flying pretty well with that. Trading and flightplanning on the KB. I foresee to do something similar with E:D also as that aloows me to sit back in my chair while flying. I must admit that the stick centers of the controller are somewhat jittery. It is difficult not to keep moving to the left/right or keep rotating around some axis.

So I'm considering a Joystick as well. Does anyone know of a flightstick where the 3rd axis is activated by rotating the stick around it's length? It just crossed my mind that that actually might be a usefull function and was wondering if that ever was implemented. I'm not sure if I would want that function in a hatswitch or something similar.

Yes , on Saitek X52 you can rotate the stick , probably other have this too but I'm just now researching.

There are plenty of 4, 5 and even 6 axis joysticks out there, with 10 - 20 buttons and a POV hat (effectivey 4 or 8 more buttons) - just look on amazon or google. Easily enough for all the flight and weapons combat controls you'd need in Elite.

Being alot older now ( Mid fifties ) :(

PS3 Motioninjoy

I've been playing Oolite and FFE with my PS3 controller. It works extremely well. You have to install "Motioninjoy" to configure it.

Just tried Oolite with a Dualshock 3 and the analog sticks just aren't precise enough for distance targetting.

Also a slight problem with them not centering properly making straight-line flight a little difficult.

They are pretty old though so that might be it.

Err... this?

I guess I'll dig out my Thrustmaster AfterburnerII again and hope it works like I want it to.
Think I played First Encounters with a Microsoft Sidewinder... but it has been a long time ago.

How about a bespoke Elite controller board, with switches for everything, all grouped up in their various sections with sexy LED switches, buttons, and knobs! Then you could lay your desk out with the ED switch panel above your KB, and throttle and JS either side, and mouse in the middle.

I'd pay out up to a ton for an ED switch panel!

Brian :)

I had to buy some new ones after a few years, the sticks start to go loose. My aiming is pretty accurate and the sticks snap back to the centre on my new Dualshocks.

A colleague has one of these at work. He uses it for 3D work and it does this well. I had never tried one before so I had a quick play with a 3D model on screen. It is amazingly intuitive. It's as if you have grabbed the model and you are rotating it around with your hand! But yes, they are expensive.
