Some of the games look bloody fantastic. How's the system like?

I quite fancy one, but between the price, and having had my fingers burned getting into PS4 (which is a whole other story)... well I do miss light console gaming, and the good craic you used to get sitting round the N64 with mates, split-screening GoldenEye or Mario Kart, but for now I'm slightly more inclined towards getting a SNES Mini or maybe just an emulator. If the Switch requires you to set up umpteen different accounts and be permanently connected to the internet, and doesn't tell you so in advance, I'll likely give it a swerve.

The new Zelda looks brilliant, though.

Yeah this. Then again we still have a working GC, PS2 and Xbox in the family as consoles, and a good few hundred titles between those systems. Nothing in the 'modern' console era has encouraged me to buy into it; Less 'good' games (especially in terms of the Switch), more violent less family friendly games, higher costs. Consoles have pretty much died in this family in terms of getting new hardware and games.

PC is where it is at. Minecraft is great, and modded Minecraft about as good as it gets for Kids fun. PC games are cheap, plentiful and easy to get and often better than their console versions, mostly due to modding.

Still the new Zelda game did give me pause, but as the Switches only top draw game, it was not enough, and if you had the WiiU already maybe a deal-breaker?

I might have to get around to building a gaming PC, if I can generate the enthusiasm for anything other than ED. Not sure about Minecraft, though... I thought it was a Blizzard (Warcraft, Starcraft) title until I watched some YouTube videos. Doesn't really seem to be my thing.

Dwarf Fortress, on the other hand...

But yeah, retro (emulation) works for me. I don't think there's much point in buying a Switch just for Mario Kart and hoping some friends come along.

Wasn't the Wii U an unmitigated failure, though? I quite fancied one until I heard the flagship launch title (the zombie thing) was rubbish and lived up to its hype about as well as No Man's Sky has, and that another title I fancied (Colonial Marines) was even worse. The original Wii was decent, but the controls... Nintendo really broke the mould with that one.

I have a Nintendo Switch (only the second games console I have ever bought - the first being the Nintendo N64).

The bad news is, it does ask for an internet connection when first initialised.

The good news is, you can skip this step and never connect to the internet. At least, I have spent many hours now playing the Zelda game with no problems. The new Super Mario game is out now and has very good reviews. That will be my next game purchase. Pity there is no equivalent to Pilotwings 64 or Wave Race 64...

Just buy one - you won't regret it. Simple as that.

I bought it on day 1, thought it was a great machine but had little software - I hate the Nintendo IP in general (Mario etc), but Zelda is amazing.

And now there's Farming Simulator, Skyrim, Doom, Rogue Trooper, A Flame in the flood and many many more. Looks like this is going to be the go to device for indie games going forward, and for once, Nintendo are supporting that!

I literally can't put Farm Sim or Skyrim down, and having it portable means I can play while the Wife is watching I'm a Celeb, or play on the TV, but then just pick it up and take it to work, upstairs, outside - you name it.

The seamless transition between docked and portable is the killer feature. And now that I'm using it 24/7 for Skyrim/Farming, I'll likely have to buy another one for the kids for Splatoon, MarioKart etc.

Fantastic device.
