Can Frontier Compete?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Did you actually played any X-series game? X Rebirth had more bugs on launch that all ED patches combined. Sure, I look forward to play X4... somewhere in 2021.

..and obviously you havent played the latest iteration of X-R, i think its great. ;)
Also, you obviously dont know the reasons why X-R failed at the launch. X4 will be completely different ball game.

Your post confuses me.

It FEELS like you agree with me.

But then it LOOKS like you don't?

And yes, okay, it's an inherent part of game design to complete tasks and goals to progress. Wouldn't be much of a game otherwise.

My point here would be, that there is a huge difference between progression coming as a consequence of game play, for example better cars through racing the one you have, or better weapons through research and winning battles.....than maybe flying 9-12k ly around a sun in an outbreak system just to make Pharmaceutical Isolators appear as if by magic, over the course of a whole day to "complete" less than a third of the tasks necessary to simply give yourself a slightly faster ship.

Outbreak system yes, makes sense. 9-12k lys? Good luck finding that out for yourself with limited time and no forum populated by people who understand what you're going through.

Need Datamined wake exceptions? Fly to the Distribution Centre of a famine system and scan all the ships wakes as they fly the food TO OTHER SYSTEMS. Nonsense.

But I think this is a little off topic. Or maybe in order to compete, Frontier need to implement better game design decisions?

Is that what you're saying?

Mostly :D There's always a progression in these types of game. I can't think of 1 that doesn't have one.

I agree that engineering could use a touchup for precisely the same reasons you say. But continuing on from that... in WoW I have to go to a certain place because it gives [substance X] which I need to combine with my raw donkey hide to make armor. I'd never really go to that area except to farm materials that I need.

Engineering was supposed to be a sprinkle of salt on the meat-and-bones of the game; an extra little fun thing. Unfortunately, it became an exploited tool and then a necessity (in some people's minds) although you certainly don't need it if you're playing solo or group, so many people treat it casually - I have mostly lvl3 mods because I don't wish to impact my gameplay with the difficulty of trying to get some pie-in-the-sky stat or tool - that would make it a grind.

As far as datamined wake exceptions, you can pick them up at almost any busy station or get them through mission rewards; that is how I get all my mats. If you simply must have a lvl 5 mod, with multiple rolls for secondaries, then you're going to have to grind for it [shrug] nothing new there.

You sound insane

I'm sorry, I missed whatever you had to say that came after this. Maybe try to figure out why.

You hope i presume. I don't think you can know at this stage.

In my experience, grade 5 isn't that bad most of the time either once unlocked and you know the tricks to find the materials/data you need (bugs notwithstanding). The main thing is not to go chasing after (as you put it) pie-in-the-sky stats. most of the time i take best of 3, and since most mats/data comes in sets of 3, it makes it quite easy to get and make rolls.

X4 isn't going to harm ED or vice versa, both games are complimentary. Because what they do is different.

ED is all about a vast free roam galaxy sized galaxy and you being an insignificant speck in it with the emphasis on flying your spaceship being a really really polished experience. The X-games are a space mogul simulator where actual flight aspects and the size of the playable area are much more limited, with the emphasis on running an empire, owning station and fleets of ships and such.

Enjoy both and appreciate the difference, variety is the spice of life. This isn't football it's OK to like the "other" side.

I think its safe to say that we know that its going to be, if you know why X-R was what it was. There were real reasons why X-R flopped and those reasons arent going to be there with X4.
It doesnt hurt to think positive.. ;)

Positive is fine, but look at how many games get hyped these days only to turn out to be a lot less than they promised.

I really don't know, I saw X4 trailer, and saw still quite outdated graphics. This time even trailer spells out that it is TRADING EMPIRE game. Which ED isn't and never aimed to be. Any new space game is exciting, but 'can ED compete' hyperbole is too much.

I tried to get into XR, and couldn't due of very sluggish interface.

I think that the OP question was wrongly phrased. I feel that it should be as follows;

"Does Frontier need to compete?".

I think that, as the leader in the genre (three years and going strong), FDev only need to maintain their level of effort to remain out in front. "No Man Sky" appears to have been renamed "No Man Plays it Anymore" and there still does not appear to be a firm date for the launch of "Star Citizen". While "Elite: Dangerous" has not held onto all of the Players who bought into it, the fact it is still selling nearly three years after the official launch, new Players are buying it (on the four platforms it is currently available on), FDev are still working on the Game, and a LOT of Players are continuing to play the Game speaks volumes.

X4 now has an October 2018 release date.

To me, this looks like most of the things, Elite always wanted to be....with the addition of quality due to being made by Germans.

Now X:Rebirth didn't do anywhere near as well as it wanted to, so I think Egosoft will be looking to release something that really wows fans in late 2018.

Assuming all this comes to pass, will ED be anywhere near as good by then? And what if Star Citizen also turns out to be anywhere near viable next year?

Will ED be able to compete?

I truly think April-August is a red-line for ED, with something truly stable, rich in content and sustainable in development "Beyond" 2018 needed by the time X4 drops.

It's open-system sustainability may be the only differentiator ED has by the end of next year.

X series were a bit different games to Elite, so not sure if there is anything to compete on. Elite is about a pilot in their ship, making adventures in an open world galaxy. X were more about 1) single player campaign story and 2) building an empire/corporation.

They are different games at their core and even though they share some specifics (happening in space, open world etc.), I don't think they can be objectively compared. But that's just like my opinion man.

Evolve or die. Naive to think otherwise.

ED is evolving. Possibly just not in a direction you want. Squadrons should bring some mechanics that many people have been wanting since 1.0. Mining improvements, a welcome addition for miners. Exploration changes, a welcome change for explorers.

Possibly just not in a direction you want.

I'm happy they have found the cupboard where all the orienteering gear was hidden. Well, more to the point, I'm happy someone told them to go look for it.

Although I wouldn't want to make any assumptions or anything.

Having loved X3 and then experiencing the huge steaming pile that is rebirth, I'm not going within a mile of x4 until at least 2 years after it's released.

Which will probably be around 2025 so i don't think it'll be any competition for Elite at all.
