General / Off-Topic Belgium Gaming Commission Says Lootboxes Are Gambling

This could get interesting. After all the attention about lootboxes in video games and how manipulative the system is, the BGC voted that they want them out.

Koen Geens, Belgium's Minister of Justice, wants to ban in-game purchases outright if you don't know exactly what you're purchasing, and apparently not just in Belgium, he would like to see this practice enforced across the EU.

I'm all for that :D

RNG in games is all well and good - you might get something and you might not.

Being forced by a game to buy RNG in order to advance the game - it deserves to suffer slowly in a cold and lonely place.

Cool...so how does this affect frontier considering they an English company?

I take a gamble on farts every morning after I take my meds...now if that were made illegal, I could save a ton of embarrassment in public places and a fortune in laundry bills.

Ridiculous? Certainly...as ridiculous as the premise that the world is gonna change their habits and transform gaming as we know it...not even in the same league. I wonder is this from the same euro think tank that gave us the bent bananas fiasco a few years back, or the time they wanted to change the name of all chocolate to vegelate because they claimed it had more vegetable extract ingredients than cocoa.

Amusing concept but like all the other dumb ideas made by dumb peeple, I very much doubt anything will come of it and the gaming world can breath a sigh of relief ^

Yeah, I think we, as gamers, have the responsibility to FORCE publishers to turn it down a notch. We just have to be responsible with our purchases and let them see what we are and what we are not willing to accept. Unfortunately there are LOTS of gamers who play games to win and not to enjoy and for them, microtransactions that allow bypassing parts of the game are the best idea in the industry. Which is sad.

This is not a euro-specific thing, verminstar. US legislators are also looking into the legality of gambling in the form of loot boxes.

This is only dumb if you ignore the fact that a big portion of game consumers are children.

Ah yes america...where people launch steam powered rockets into the sky to prove a flat earth theory...

I doubt anything will come of it tbh...I dont gamble because I dont see the point but I also realize the world of gaming aint gonna change on the words of some think tank based in Brussels who brought us the bent banana debacle or some reasearch paper paid for with corporate advertising from the land of the free.

We have different perspectives...I believe one would have to be as clinically dumb as a bag of spanners to even consider taking something like this seriously. Its funny and a bit sad to think we have fallen so far in the world, but serious it is not ^
