Final nail in the coffin for the Thargoid "Story"

Yeah. By hacking game files. Mathematical probabilities, you know. Its impossible to find this stuff without having hints. End of story.

Nope - I've found plenty. Keep your eyes open and you can find stuff. Not everything, but something - plenty out there, especially as some players appear uninterested in finding anything on principal [rolleyes]

They lost my interest when it became apparent that all we're getting is more pewpew.

QFT. This pewpew is pretty special though ...

1) Very wing focused => solo players excluded
2) Targets are considered as the nice Thargoids by many lore focused players => excluded
3) Targets require a lot of skill and / or heavy engineering => casuals excluded

So yeah, a niche expansion focused on the iconic enemy of the franchise. A bit like a Startrek game with the Klingons opponents only available in the end game.
The very low participation metrics in the CGs are not that surprising after all.

300 ish participants in CGs. Nerfed weapons. Doesn't seem to be a huge draw of the player base. Beautiful graphics, animations and sound. Seems like another youtube game feature at this point. A basic bounty hunting CG crushes Thargoids for participation...

Remember - the stuff Palin wants doesn't come from sampling the thargies - no need to make them angry at all.
Let's see
  • Going to all those INRA bases and killing all the ... oh hang on that wasn't pewpew
  • Sampling thargoids (which you can do without fighting / harming the thargoids) that's just pew ... oh, not that either
  • Investigating the logos on the thargoids by scanning ... ummm, not pew pew
  • Mapping NHSS locations t .... dammit - no pew
  • Visiting new wrecked megaships in the Pleiades .... ack - not pewy
  • Finding classic crashes like the thargoid scout and Jameson .... hmmm, lacking pew and also pew
  • Fighting the thargoids - ok now we have not only pew but also pew
I agree - it's all pewpew :)

"Going to all those INRA bases": I'm bored just hearing about it.
"Sampling Thargoids": Try THAT without getting shot at by a flower.
"Investigating the logos on the Thargoids": Are you kidding? You mean the flowers? Who says those are Thargoids? GalNet? You believe GalNet?
"Mapping NHSS locations": zzzZZZzzzZZZ
"Finding Crashes": ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
"Fighting Thargoids": Meh. Pew-Pew, Rebuy. Credit-sink.

Okay, it's not ALL pew-pew, just the interesting part.

It's really quite trivial to sample Thargoids without aggroing them. Getting non-suicidal limpets was the hard part and presumably they're going to fix that now.

As for the rest, most of it wouldn't be my cup of tea either although I thought the trip to the Jameson fighter was actually worthwhile, it's more than just a crashed ship, they put a little effort in, which is nice to see once at least. To each their own, at the end of the day though.

What "final nail"? implying that the whole 2.4 is somewhat lacking or dead? doubt it. The story seems to be developing. Who knows how long the thargoids will take to make their moves. The martians in Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" took hundreds of years to make decisions.
Trees on earth can live up to hundreds or thousands of years. The galnet has recently reported the activity to be localized at Pleiades, but that could very well change sometime.

Me too, until I tried to take a tissue sample from one

Damn thing didn't like that one bit. Oooops. Dead. :D

I was getting thargoid samples with shields, thrusters , FSD and power distributor all switched off.

Thargoids let me take samples from them without so much as a murmur, well to be fair they did issue a few groans :)

They didnt attack me though. Just let me lie silent and cold in space watching them from a frozen cockpit

Thargoid story has no coffin. It was buried unceremoniously in an unmarked grave at an unknown location. There are a series of cryptic clues indicating what planet the grave is on, but to find it you have to manually dig up every square inch of the planet surface, because THERE ARE NO COORDINATES.

Best place to experience the Elite Dangerous story: literally anywhere but the Elite Dangerous game itself.

Indeed, though this is rather moot as the Web is here to stay. So in that case the backstory on the aliens in the franchise has always been with us since the advent of Web 2.0, perhaps

The problem is that the web isn’t part of the game. The story in elite is nice and I wish more people knew more about it, including myself but I find it disgusting to go and read in the wiki page or in the frontier forums or in reddit or in YouTube about it. In other words, if you want to learn about the story of elite you better not play it.

Please read the post to which I replied as well, it makes my point more on topic.

Exactly what I said but more gruesome :)

Ahh, interesting! I'd deliberately avoided any tutorial vids on it so it was mostly an experiment to see what'd happen :D I'll try again with a cooler build. Thanks.

Ok, you get rep for just how savage that was. :O

The untested AI, the God mode switch in the first 2 days, the boring CGs unrelated to thargoids themselves, the 4 AX limit, the class 2 limit, the absence of any engineer that can mod using thargoid dropped materials... etc etc

It had all the excitement of a dead horse out of the gate.

To top it off now it seems that the "player driven" story is once again shattered. CGs don't even matter apparently. They can't have the players messing up THEIR story. Weapons will be available as planned this Thursday.

No matter how many weapons or modules are added there still remains no point in engaging thargoids. Simply give value to the materials they drop by giving us something to engineer with them. That and remove the stupid 4x AX limit.

If you use CG participation (<300) as a gauge of player interest, then I'd have to say there isn't much interest in Thargoid participation. Compared with some high paying combat CG's with over 8k contributors, and usually over 2k participants for run of the mill type CG's, current Thargoid interest is nothing. I've tried tissue sampling in the past, I couldn't manage it in my cobra. Instead of participating in Thargoid CG's I'm spending my time gathering engineering mats so I can RNGineer ship components to be a bit more rugged. No Thargoid participation for me.....

I don't think one CG that didn't go according to plan is going to be the final nail in any coffin.

do i sense a form of cynism there?

there seem to be many coffins in Elite:
- CQC (won't be developed further if not beeing played enough...)
- Multicrew (wont be developed if not used. was delivered almost unusable so more or less abandoned from the beginning)
- "narrative story content" delivered on twitter and youtube. (when more content is delivered via social media channels then in the game)
- open multiplayer (peer2peer + wifi = no fun)
- focused feeback (even that one has come to an halt)

my expectations on "squadrons" are VERY low...

People make all this reference to 'Thargoid Story'. What story? We can't say that the story has failed until we actually see a current narrative progression. The Thargoids are like an actor on-staage with an amazing costume that says nothing and we know nothing of their current motivations or intentions. There is no emotion to be felt.

I could say this in defence of Frontier but we should stop talking about the story failing until we actually see the narrative progression take place (assuming it does).

repackaged, recycled old mechanics do not equal an expansion....the cg, uss and all the other no cost stuff were already considered placeholder during the original beta when people believed in THE VERTICAL SLICE, after the hype....dishing the same again? ss, uss, cg...................it's like taking the colorz out of the planets and then announcing putting them back in twelve months as a major improvement, switching something back on which you switched off?

Honestly when I heard that there was a cancelled Community Goal I thought for a second the Galaxy was starting to be scary. I thought wrong. :D
