I see two uses of the SRV in exploration - 1) driving around for the sake of "sightseeing" at ground level, and 2) Collecting materials for synthesis and AMFU.
Regarding the first, I can fly really close to the ground for that kind of sight-seeing, and I can land and use my camera mode to "pretend" I'm walking around outside my ship in a space suit. I actually find this more rewarding, visually, than using the SRV.
Also consider this: if you are out for a while (without an SRV) and FD throw out an update with some cool planetary type content you wouldn't be able to access it.
If you genuinely find the latter more rewarding then I guess there's not much I can say to dissuade you but personally, flying over a landscape (even at low altitude, and even using debug cam to pretend to walk) and actually driving across the landscape (and maybe cresting a ridge to find some vast valley blocking my path or having the sun come up and throw the shadow of my SRV across the landscape in front of me) .... boy, those are COMPLETELY different things. It's like watching a video of a ski slope vs. being on it!
Quick question, only slightly off-topic...for those of you that take a mining laser, do you also need a refinery? Or do you just scoop the fragments?
No you don't.
Back in my day we didn't have them at all, nor that fancy synthesis stuff.
But we were happy.
You only need the refinery for the ore that will be turned into canisters to sell, and take up cargo space. For the "materials", you can just scoop those up. The latter drop in much smaller proportion.
