Elite Dangerous is the Largest Empty Sandbox Ever Made

Well, is that good enough for you Cosmo? Response from the devs acknowledging your concerns and admitting they can do better. Don't think you will get better than that.

So when you say, "don't think you will get better than that", do you mean Cosmo will get a post on the forums, but not any changes to the game to actually address the concerns?

Forum posts aren't really worth much. It is actual game improvements that anyone cares about. :) :) :)

See now Squadrons... I'm dreading squadrons, it seems as though it's going to bring everything to Elite that I don't want and I am worried that it will destroy the balance in the game once and for all. I'll reserve my true judgement until we see more details, but it doesn't bode well in my opinion.

Have faith.... ever since FDev has allowed for ways of groups to play since wings...it has had no real affect on the overall game. If people do not like what happens when groups get together in Open...they can play the game the way they like in Private Group or solo.

I thought you didnt want to change anything and the modes are the best thing since sliced bread.

I am creating my own content thank you very much.

You keep misinterpreting the discussions that are aimed at this issue...everyone is happy with change...it's just that some change cannot happen because it would be a complete teardown and rewrite of the code, server system, etc.

as someone who loves space games, and has put hundreds of hours into both this and no man's sky, this is imho quite unfair. that game was a disaster at launch (i was there, the horror) but the updates hammered it into very good shape, especially atlas rises which throws in a number of main story plot quests which you can do or ignore at leisure. the space / combat portion will never come close to elite, but in terms of exploration and discovery it is currently light years ahead. tons of gameplay loops, reasonably decent missions for various factions which encourage exploration and unlock the ability to upgrade scanning equipment, which leads to significant discovery payouts / bonuses which feeds back into base building which loops around to more exploration etc.

i'd personally *love* to see the exploration / planet content in elite fleshed out in similar fashion - you're encouraged to spend hours finding all creatures for a bonus, for example, or scan x amount of minerals to progress missions / yet more exploration. and when you have as many planets as you do in both this and that, anything making you want to stick around and look at things has got to be a good thing.

it's honestly worth giving it a go if you've not tried it with the most recent additions. anyway, back on topic.

Honestly it wasn't anything against NMS but rather the annoying Sandbox kiddos.
I simply hate it if a spacesim is mixed up with sb stuff.

I love NMS for the SB Updates and i love ED for living without such things.
I play a Sim here not a Sandbox.

And from my classical understanding of game categories ED is Spacesim and
can't be the worst ever released Sandbox BECAUSE IT ISN'T A SANDBOX. *damn* :p

You love it, or you hate it. Or you love it for a while then fall out of love. Or you fall in love and never fall out. That's life. About all things.

I'm not sure another thread about helps. We have had a lot of them

the same way you are not caring about solo and PG influence despite making twice as many posts as anyone else on one of the threads discussing it?
To be fair, I don't care either and I made quite a few of those.

I mean, all this is not for realsies anyway, and no one gives a crap about what anyone writes. It's just a way to get through a couple of minutes avoiding the terrible condition of not having something to do in that time, we'd rather submit to a constant stream of meaningless information pouring into our consciousness, because god forbid you might hear yourself think for a second. And if you're lucky you get a chuckle out of it and use that as excuse for coming back for to distract you from the kids skateboarding on the sideboard.

snip...

If there isn't Sand put in the box for Players to actually mold, change and influence themselves.. In an innovative and bold way.. This game will just fall off into obscurity.

...snip.

Was said years ago.

It's really too bad there isn't any building in Elite; no compelling emergent game-play.

Well that was an interesting read, some very emotive posts, Mods and even FD getting involved, accusations made, replies ignored - all pretty standard for a post of this topic.

Speaking of the topic, that being is Elite a sandbox and if it is, is there any sand in said box, it got me thinking over my morning coffee. I have come to the realisation that ED perfectly represents a sandbox, especially a big one in a Kindergarten. Just think, you have the same group of people playing Elite as there are kids playing in a real sandbox:

  • There is that kid that always plays alone, no one is quite sure what he is doing, but he is having a lot of fun doing whatever he is doing.
  • There are the group of kids that always play together, they never argue, they never fight over the toys in the sandbox, each is doing their own thing but they are doing it together.
  • Then there are the gaggle of kids in the far corner, playing war games in the sand. They have made their own rules, inasmuch as kids can, and stick to those rules.
  • Of course in any group, you will have the strange little kids who just run around kicked over everyone else's sandcastles, because they can, and they know the teacher isn't looking
  • We can't forget the kids who don't play in the sandpit anymore, but still insist on standing on the edge telling all the rest they are playing in the sand wrong
  • And finally, we have the kids who decided they didn't like playing in the sandbox anymore, and went on to discover other games and activities in the Kindergarten
  • And overseeing all of this are the teachers and the teachers aides who are trying to let everyone do what they want.

There seem to be a couple of different definitions of sandbox which is contributing to the rancour.

- There are Open World games where you can pretty much do what you want and follow any storyline at pretty much your own pace as and when you feel like it. Skyrim, GTA, etc.
- There are 'empire building' games where you accumulate, build, and expand your personal fiefdom - Eve, Civ, etc.

ED fits the first much better than the second.

The extra sand should focus on more variation in that Open World and additional depth to the gameplay of being a space pilot, not as extra features focused on empire building.
