Can I view desktop windows on my VR?

Question - Is it possible to call up desktop app, or the whole desktop into my Oculus VR?

I don't mean so I can view it in 3D just really so I can interact with apps such as ED Engineer etc without taking off the Rift.

Also while I know other headsets have a built in external cam is there anyway to link an webcam to the Rift so I could (for example) type on the keyboard?

I doubt I am the first to think of this so I'm hazarding that the answer is 'no' but would like confirmation and perhaps a state of play re this in future VR equipment.

BTW - Rift is epic but I doubt I could play ED in 2D again!

Oculus Dash should be coming out in December (in beta at least). This should solve the biggest problem a lot of us have in Elite VR!

I use VR desktop from steam, by voice I say “switch to desktop” to see perfectly my windows. Problem is still keyboard typing. I also use hello V to have a netflix or pandora streaming inside elite. The last one is very bugged and just do the job, but you cant make changes without parking the ship or going out to the main menu. New oculus update in December should bring something new, I hope. And they are developing gloves too. Will it be implemented by fdev? I don’t know, but I hope they give some love to vr users when it does.

The pimax should have almost all vive options since it can drop in replace it, possibly some of their own software as well but i havnt heard about anything planned.

Ive been using the steamvr desktop after sizing it down to 1.2m across and have it appear about a meter from me, works perfectly for checking eddb and such.

Got my keyboard in between the throttle and stick plus the mouse to the right of the stick so i can control my desktop just fine without taking the HMD off.

EDIT: the steamvr desktop can be used on the rift as well if you run elite through steamvr.

Thanks for the updates all, it looks like help is on the way. I hope it addresses the keyboard thing!

If you can view your desktop could you not just stick a webcam on your Rift and view that in a desktop window?

Welcome to the "Downside" of VR ;). Now you know all the times you where in game txt'ing me i was not ignoring you, :) :) :) . Just that you can't type with an erking great blindfold on your swede, Unless of course you are a clever sod and can touch type!!).

Hopefully 'Dash' when it is released this month (Beta???) will go a long way to improving the experience of VR.

I guess I'm a "clever sod".

I learned to touch type in my late 40s, by using free typing tests/games on the internet. I think most people can learn the skill; it just takes practice. These days, I practice my typing on forums. :D

Seriously, touch typing is a very useful skill; you should consider learning it.

There is always one in every Class ;) You enjoy it, for me? well i have about as much co-ordination as a bloke who has knack all co-ordination and been to a hospital to have all co-ordination surgically removed!! :) :)

:D If I can learn to touch type, nearly anyone can. :)

True story: In 7th grade I was so uncoordinated, I was excused from taking an elective Typing class and wound up taking Home Ec instead. My fine motor skills have improved over the years (but I'm still a klutz). I think what I was missing in 7th grade was motivation. I had no idea that I'd wind up being a programmer and type all day long for a living.

The word you mentioned is 'NEARLY!!!! I, unfortunately, fall into the nearly side of things. Don't get me wrong i have tried, but years and years and years (Yes i am that old) of 2 finger typing whilst looking at the keyboard has pretty much been superglued into my brain and muscle memory! I am not alone in the 2 finger typing club either. I work in the PC industry (Sales Director) and i would say a huge % of our customer base are like me. Now whether that is like me, incapable, or just plain lazy, i am not sure and have no solid facts about.

So i yearn for a Virtual keyboard within the VR FOV! I have made a few Voice Attack Pirate auto typing commands, and have made a few basic 'Courtesy' VR commands that i can call up from VA to give a warning to other chat happy cmdrs that i am not ignoring them, but unable to strike up a conversation due to me wearing VR. That seems to work, but then once they know i am wearing VR, they tend to fire more questions at me :) :( :) !

More on Rift Core 2.0 and Oculus Dash ...

https://www.roadtovr.com/rift-core-...-virtual-desktop-feature-requires-windows-10/

"Those excited for the virtual desktop functionality, which promises to allow users to run traditional desktop PC apps inside the Rift at any time, even while inside VR apps, will need to update to Windows 10. Users still running Windows 7 and 8 will still be able to use Dash to browse their VR app library and for some other functionality, but won’t be able to use ‘Oculus Desktop’ virtual computing function, or run Dash as an overlay on top of VR apps, the company says. Oculus indicates this is for performance reasons."

Oh, Damn! Will this mean i have to have 388.31 Nvidia driver update? and will they also insist on the M$ Autumn Update which has long gone from my gaming PC as it wrecked it (Along with 388.13). I am currently on 385.79 driver

Funny thing re: 388.31 (which I'm now using) - I've been VERY happily using 387.29 (or something like that) for ages now (and also a rolled back version 2 of GeForce Experience for Shadowplay) but for some reason when 388.31 arrived I just could not stop it from re-installing itself (and knocking out my GeForceX in the process) no matter how many times I cleared it all out with DDU, re-installed 387 and turned off all my Windows driver updates. In the end I gave up, did some reading (couldn't see any major issues with 388.31), ran DDU again, installed 388.31 manually, re-installed GeForce Experience 2 and rebooted. It seems pretty happy now and I haven't noticed any issues since.

Edit: note that it seems 388.31 is fixing stuttering issues that a lot of people experienced with 388.13 (sheesh nvidia, could you make your version numering any more confusing).

Thanks for all the info, I have to admit I forgot I posted this thread - doh!

I did install virtual desktop but when I activated it it immediately shut down ED! :S

So I hope that the new Dash can be run in conjunction with a windowed ED.

Hi Mate, how is the VR experience going? You have been ignoring my in game txts so i guess you either hate me, ignoring me, or maybe just enjoying the VR to much to type :) :)
