Next ship for me

As I like trading I was thinking of moving up from a sidewinder to a hauler next. In the sidewinder trade runs I have made so far, any interdictions have been fairly survivable by hitting max speed/turbo/four pips. Is it equally survivable in a hauler or would I be a sitting duck if interdicted with very little chance of escape?

I think it is pretty similar to the Sidewinder. I definitely was a little concerned with each interdiction but I managed to not get caught, it probably depends on a bit of luck and your tactic. I go to the top of the throttle blue zone so I can put them on my six quickly then throttle and boost.

It isn't that many trades from a Hauler to a Cobra and I'd probably view it differently if the pirates in question were players.

Yes, it is. You can escape even faster by hitting boost and turning Flight Assist off while boost is spooling up.

I have to admit I have not tried flight assist off much at all other than in the original offline barrel shooting area. I have it programmed on a Warthog stick pinkie lever but set for hold on release off. If it's that useful might be worth setting it to toggle and experimenting a bit more.

Definitely. When I get interdicted, I go full throttle, line ship up with destination, take hand off the joystick, press Boost and disable FA. As a result the ship reaches max velocity, and won't slow down until you enable FA again.

It's actually how I do the final approach to stations as well. Different ship do have different breaking distances, however. A Type 6 laden with 100 tons of cargo does not stop as quickly as a Hauler with 16 tons :)

I've had no problems getting away from interdictions in a Hauler. The ship isn't much slower than a sidewinder, and if you get frameshift running as soon as possible, the interdictor may not even show up on your radar.

Cheers, Phos.

I ran my Hauler completely unarmed & with no special equipment to maximize jump range and I never held back from visiting anarchy systems. I never met anything I couldn't run away from. Currently doing the same thing in a Lakon Type 6 (which is actually a much faster ship than the Hauler to my surprise) as well.

EDIT: Bear in mind that I very much doubt that this is representative of the final game. I expect FDEV will start experimenting with the difficulty level eventually, so enjoy "easy mode" while it lasts.

That boosting to max speed and then switching flight assist off thing is a bit of an exploit. I wonder if they will find a way of stopping this.

I havent had any problems boosting away from an interdiction without switching F/A off yet and that is flying a sidewinder, a hauler and a lately a Lakon type 6. I just make sure engines are on max and the moment I come out of supercruise, I boost.

The game is clearly geared (at the moment) so we can get away from faster ships as long as we are prompt. If it wasnt, then every interdiction by a sidewinder would spell doom (for me) as the 'fighters' would catch the 'haulers'.

Having said that I have taken to switching F/A off now at these times... because I can.

But no, they can't. Because all the "Space Physics" whiners will cry and whine and spit out their dummies at yet ANOTHER example of FD "ruining" the space sim aspect of ED. /sarcasm

Got to be easy to fix this though. For example, at the login for each session you could be asked whether you want flight assist on or off, and then it would remain that way until the end of the session. I am all in favour of flight assist off in principle, there are some amazing videos of people flying this way. Just search Youtube for 'Elite flight assist off'

Why should they though?

They have implemented the flight assist model so that the actual thrusters on the ships fire to make the corrections that enable this mode of flight. This is on as default for ease of flying. Turn it off and you are in the Newtonian mode of space flight YOU the pilot have to make those thruster corrections. Is it so far fetched that this would actually be a thing on space ships in the future?

There is no need to have one or the other when both in one ship are totally feasible.

I've seen those flight videos and they are astounding for sure.

That is actually a new mechanic, in PB the boost speed fell off back down to normal with FA off. Also the power level in engines was a factor too. I'm sure they could put it back that way if they wanted.

IMHO they shouldn't, I like the ability to superspeed and move system power around at the same time :)

Turning FA off and hitting boost once for max speed has changed how I fly station approaches, that's for sure.

The first few times doing a station approach like that were a bit scary until you figure out how to maximize the braking. And the hauler sounds like it's about to break up...but I love it anyway. Hasn't failed me yet.
