X-Wing: Virtual Machine

Oh my, if they could do this to Tie-Fighter and X-Wing alliance then it would be even more glorious.

I imagine it'll come in due time, particularly as X-Wing, TIE Fighter and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (and to an extent, Alliance) all run on the same engine, just with varying levels of graphical fidelity :)

Are you sure about that? X-Wing, TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance certainly handle the same way, but XvT has a noticeably different feel and faster, more movie-like lasers. I always thought XvT was the one running on an alternative engine.

They seem to do, as the mission files are all the same file types and you can use the fan made mission editor interchangeably between all three games (well, XWA is a bit more of a 'mare due to the added complexity the YT freighers added) and you can 'port' ships from the other games (again with the exception of XWA) into the others. Its how I built a XvT campaign that featured a Carrack cruiser, which was only in TIE fighter.

Forget it. Disney is probably gonna crush it. Or EA. Or both. Because license.

I think you'd be surprised. The Star Wars license seems to be quite a lot more loosely handled than most other IPs, which is why stuff like Tides of War (a freelancer mod), numerous other mods/adaptions and even of all things, the Star Wars Galaxies EMUs, happily plod along without any serious intervention (unlike MGM got with the Stargate Franchise).

Dont quote me on that but there was a SW mod for Arma 3 and it as taken very fast from this very reason I believe.

Well, Galaxy in Turmoil got its cease and desist. And if EA finds out the space battle was the favoured module in Lootfront 2 they may well decide to capitalise on that.

I'd love to see a proper Tie fighter career game. That old Tie Fighter game was just epic.

I still love those games. The artwork is absolutely marvellous even 25(ish) years later - yeah, I'm a sucker for pixels. It ain't retro, it's what I grew up with.

But if any games series deserved a respectful updating - and certainly a more respectful one than a big publisher might give it - it's X-Wing. Really hope this project is allowed to stay; I know Disney doesn't really play nice with fanworks, but at the moment it isn't competing with a commercial licensee (if you overlook the reissue of the original games on Gog).

Arise! ARISE!!!

Time to resurrect this thread instead of the new one I was about to start :D

I mentioned this game in the VR Reviews thread the other day, but seeing as it is primarily a flatscreen game I thought it deserved a bit more visibility.

XWVM has just released its latest version and it has been consuming my time since I installed it a few days ago. Fully playable in flatscreen or VR, and requires you have an original version of X Wing installed - I'm using my X Wing Collector's CD-ROM, though it will work with modern releases on Steam or GoG. There are a few areas left needing work (some briefing rooms are flat shaded, as are Nebulon Frigates) but all missions appear to be fully functional and in some cases, have been patched/modified. The original iMuse system has been remastered, sounds awesome, and is optional if you want the old SoundBlaster experience.

Work on Tie Fighter is also ongoing.

Here is me putting my slightly rusty dogfighting (mediocre) skill to public scrutiny:
