Performance drop following latest update

I've not been on in the past week. When I went on today I needed to install the latest update. I also needed to install the update to Dr.Kaii's profiler, which started with an error and failed to apply my settings. I got it to work by following the error's instructions and re-setting up my settings (non VR) manually in game. After that everything worked fine.

However when I want into VR (Vive) I noticed a significant performance drop. In particular in stations and on planets. I can turn my head and see a wall of black before the graphics load. Textures a very slow to load in, the spinny ship on the loading screen is mega low res, and the menu screens in stations are painfully slow.

As far as I can tell, none of my graphics settings have changed, not my set up in ED Profiler. But I never had this sort of poor performance before.

Anyone else?

By any chance are you running with Nvidia driver ver 388.13?

And wherd you updated by Microsoft to their Autumn (Fall) downgrade (Sarcasim) ?

If yes to both then first off get rid of Nvidia driver by updating to latest. This disaster of an upgrade caused HUGE performance hit in ED. If that does not help or partially helps go to windiws settings and disable the DVR Game Bar stuff.

All this should help. If, like me, both these fixes did not help, then i uninstalled M$ update and stopped it from re upgrading again, and went back to an early known good Nvidia driver.
Hope this helps.

Hmmm the NVidia driver I just updated to is 388.43.

I've disabled this 'game bar' thing in settings.

I've tried turning all my settings to low in VR and still get the black when I turn my head and can watch it load in the graphics.

So I don't think this is a VR issue. I can mess around the various odd Vive environments without any issues at all. It seems to be an ED thing.

The two things that have changed are: Updating ED Profiler and updating ED.

It' playable. There are absolutely no issues in space. It's just I have to move my head slowly in stations or on planets.

Bring up the FPS counter in game (Ctrl F). What FPS you getting in stations? Do you know what you where getting before issue started.

You could try going back to an Nvidia Version prior to 388.13 (I am on 385.43). This solved my issue of Extremely low FPS throughout the game (When i say low i mean LOW, like 18 FPS in Stations and 27 in Space.) Twas the same in Monitor mode as well.
Doubt it is ED Profiler, but check in game settings reflect what ED Profiler is saying and make sure it has not secretly shoved SS and HMD up to 2.0 each (Which would give you a similar result!). You could quickly uninstall ED Profiler, as it is not a big deal.

Next and i guess most extreme would be to roll back Windows Autumn downgrade, but you are describing almost word for word what i was experiencing.

Good Luck and let us know.

The frame rate is great. In the on screen widow everything looks fine, and SteamVR shows almost no dropped frames...

I think is it the SS. But nothing to do with dirvers, ED Profiler of ED after all.

Messing around in the SteamVR settings I notices a SS slider in that. I don't recall seeing this before. This was set to 4.0. In ED Profiler (and confirmed in game) it is set to 1.5.

Reducing this slider in SteamVR to 1 had several impacts: obviously the visual quality went down, but the shearing/black loading side bits vanished and it was very smooth. Also interestingly, the FDEV and ED loading graphics on start up where much larger.

I have currently set this SteamVR SS slider to 2 and will tweak it up bit by bit to see when the black loading edges re-appear when moving the head fast.

It seems this might have been some update to SteamVR as opposed to anything I though it was.

So thank you for that suggestion as this seems to have been the issue.

Glad you are sorted, and did not have to uninstall anything.
