First Discovered not showing up?

So I'm out exploring (pretty far out) and I jump into a system......scan the star.....look at system and see no "first Discovered" planets. So I'm like heck yeah! Let's go claim those.....fly all the way to them....scan them....then they show up as already discovered. Am I missing something? I have a bunch of "first discovered" and this seems to happen from time to time. Any ideas? Or am I just not seeing something obvious?

You mean they show up as Unexplored first and then you scan them the First Discovered shows up?

Yes....but most of the time when I jump in...scan star and honk....check out system, I see "unexplored" but they will also say "first discovered". I don't want to waste time trying to claim any ice planet that is already claimed (that is 10,000ls out). That's just not worth money/time....not that Icy worlds are worth anything.

Strange. I don't think I've seen this problem myself. Like you say, honk the system and usually you see the discovered by. You probably should take some screen shots before, after, and then submit a bug report.

Those bodies are unexplored to you until you scan them. If someone has scanned a body and sold the data, the 1st disscovery tag will be shown, regardless of what else you know of the body.
You still get the normal value (which is higher if you have Detailed Surface Scanner equipped and powered), but you won't get the 1st discovery bonus is someone else has claimed that.

I'm on xbox one.....so screenshots are not as easy. It seems to be a bug to me. Thanks for the reply!

Sometimes it takes a bit of time for the tags to appear - the server is probably busy.

And then there's the remote possibility that the tag owner is just selling their data.

It happens sometimes due to server or database lag. It's happened to me a few times.
Because of the way procedural generation works, the "discovered by" name tags are not part of the system but looked up by body name in a separate database.
Nothing is looked up until you open the system map. If that database is slow to respond, the default state is to show nothing.
When you look again and the database responds faster, you might then see the discovered by tag.

Of course it's also (remotely) possible that someone else scanned it first and just happened to sell their data at the same time you were in the system scanning planets.

Edit: Ninja'd
