Field of view

When you press the left shift key, the views zooms out a bit giving a wider field of view. Is there any setting to make this effect permanent?

Go to C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml

Change the FOV from 60 to around 80 (or whatever you feel comfortable with)

Obviously at your own risk etc etc..

Hold down the left-shift key ?

It's the default key for allowing you to access the various different panels (navigation/system etc...). Because it needs to shift the view to the chosen panel when you hold shift, but before you press the direction of the panel, it pulls the camera back a bit.

Yup, I think it's called the "UI Focus" button? o7

It is also handy to use when you are doing the loop of shame, to see that the throttle is in the blue zone. I have it bound to my hotas pinky switch.

You can do it with a slider in the graphics options. It goes up to 90
But editing the xml file allows you to go beyond that. I actually use 110 degrees.

FYI
%Username%\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml

Can be copied and pasted directly without having to edit the link.

A handy tip. :)

The in-game slider is 30-60. Unless it got changed in one of the new patches?

People saying adjust the FOV, but does it actually have the same effect as holding down the Shift key?

It does. The FoV change by holding the UI focus key is ~10 degrees from what I can tell. Whap it up to 90 and enjoy the all the glory of the cockpit. Note that CQC ignores the setting and slaps your face right up against the dashboard. Quite jarring :D

Edit: FoV at 90 with 21:9 screen

You do get some perspective warping around the edges of the screen, but if you keep your focus in the centre, and depending on the distance of your screen from your face, it should be pretty accurate...

^ Awww jiss; I love that view - the HUD has always bothered me a little because it's always felt right on top of me; way too close.
I may just play for an extra hour per session cos of this.

Yeah, the default 30 is ridiculously low, unless you're playing sitting on the sofa in front of a TV or something. Then it makes sense, as the screen probably occupies about 30 degrees of your actual FoV. Not sure if an artistic choice or future-proofing for consoles...

If the whinging threads about ED's fall from high graphical fidelity due to the arrival of the evil crummy consoles is to be believed.. then it's future-proofing. Otherwise, artistic. Probably.

:D I suspect it's to avoid the perspective warping around the edges. Planets remain nice and spherical in the periphery at low FoV. Speaking of which, it also affects the camera suite, so if you do go with a higher FoV, you can still mitigate the warping in screenshots by zooming the camera in...
